done with respect to this, and continuing with the rising sea levels and issues that come with it, we fully expect we'll need to be deeply involved and make sure we adapt to the changing environment. >> governor baker say he's still working with the federal government to get as much money as he possibly can to reimburse the cost of the damage last winter. and jury selection is on hold in the trial of a teen who killed his teacher. his lawyer says she doesn't think he's competent to stand trial. and aaron hernandez's murder trial is on hold.

than planned on january 19th. he's already serving a life sentence. this is an important change, the department of children and families is getting its first full-time medical director. they named a pediatrician in umass medical school to the post. they're under a microscope right now after several high profile cases in which children died. they'll make sure every child placed in foster care gets a medical screening within a week of placement. and close call for a driver on the north shore. huge piece of scrap metal went right through the windshield. we're told it flew off the truck, smashed into the windshield, the driver amazingly is okay. the truck did not stop, and

it's not clear if the driver knew it flew off. well, we are just a few hours now from the first democratic presidential debate. all the candidates taking part, so far it doesn't sound like joe biden will be on the stage in las vegas, but cnn is keeping an open podium for him just in case. here are the rules the candidates have to follow tonight. they can't bring any cell phones in, they can't bring tablets or notes to the stage, they'll be given a pad, paper and pen, and each have one minute to answer any direct 30 seconds for rebuttal. >> definitely not trump, there's no democratic trump,

but one might emerge, but there are three significant political developments i will be watching for in all seriousness. hillary clinton has seen her approval ratings melt in the campaign heat, but tonight is a chance to reintroduce herself to millions of voters. all she has to do is be calm and passional, and forceful and above the fray, conveying lofty investigation while seeming down to earth. she'll also have to respond to the strategy of sanders who's giving her fits in iowa and new hampshire. will he go hot with direct engagement of clinton or stay school, proving he can be presidential. an ounce of humor from either would be worth of pound of rhetoric. and then the three other guys, who on earth are they? >> two former governors and a former senator, none of whom have left a footprint in the sand yet.

vermont, color really coming on strong with that comer stretch of air. look at that, beautiful show. beautiful fall color, feeling a little warm outside though the last couple of days. 70s yesterday, # 0s again today -- 70s again today, and humidity, 70 in lawrence and norwood. tracking a couple of showers moving our way. one little downpour, not expecting much expect for a few rain drops this evening. most of rain has already fallen this morning. so that one batch we saw in the morning moving toward canada, the cold front moving through tonight, and cooler air filtering in slowly through this week. gradual overnight clearing. mainly upper 40s to low 50s. pretty mild.

great start start to the day -- start to the day wednesday, and partly cloudy in the afternoon, but the morning is the time to be outside. once the sun sets the clouds start to break part and dissipate. sun rise at 6:55 in the morning. mid-day into the 60, but clouds building. wind shifted direction out of the west/southwest, and then in the afternoon, cool and an isolated sprinkle over the higher terrain, that's about it. showers few and far between. highs mild, mid to upper 60s, warmest air in eastern massachusetts and coolest across the higher terrain of central mass. thursday a quiet weather day. seasonal temperatures, bright skies. friday is the front we're watching. it means more business. showers thursday night into friday morning, and usher in much colder air this weekend, something we're going to notice.

a big dip in the jet stream, a cold blast that could feature the first wide-spread freeze, especially sunday night, and i wouldn't be surprised to see snow flakes in parts of new england this weekend. 70s today to talking about mid- to late november conditions. chance of rain saturday, lower 50, a lot of wind, and 40s sunday. here's the seven-day, really just going down in the temperature department through the weekend. three-day cold shot, so not a permanent change. >> you did say snow flakes? >> yes, i think we'll see a few mainly in the mountains. tonight fire investigators in kansas city are trying to figure out what sparked this deadly fire. two firefighters died at hero, rescuing at least two people

from the burning building. >> reporter: part of this deadly collapse was caught on video, and the view from the air showed aftermath. two kansas city firefighters killed in the collapse. >> it's difficult when you live with somebody for 24 hours a way day, and laughing and joking one minute, and something like this happens in the line of duty. >> reporter: two others were injured in the collapse. firefighters rushed to the scene about 7:30 last night, found the thick smoke, flame, the chief says firefighters did not die in vain. >> they saved two civilians, carried them out before the wall collapsed. >> and firefighters in boston sent their condolences tweeting thinking about the kansas city fire department as they grieve. one of the injures firefighters
