reality star lamar odom is fighting for his life after he is found unconscious in a nevada brothel. and the cubs win for the first time in 12 years the chicago cubs advance to the national league championship series. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. the first democratic presidential debate of the 2016 campaign was dominated by hillary clinton and bernie sanders. five took part in arguing over gun control and immigration and as danielle nottingham reports from las vegas it was clinton and sanders who stole the show. >> reporter: gun control and inequality were some of the big issues on the night. in the end hillary clinton and bernie standards stood out.

in the e-mail scandal dogging her campaign. she apologized again but then turned to the issues. >> tonight, i want to talk, not about my e-mails but about what the american people want from the next president of the united states. >> reporter: her closest challenger senator bernie sanders agreed. >> enough of the e-mails! let's talk about the real issues facing america! >> thank you! >> reporter: but clinton separated herself from sanders, first on his self-labeled democratic socialism. >> we would make a grave mistake to turn or back on the middle class in the united states. >> you can have all of the growth you want and it doesn't mean anything if all of the new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. >> reporter: clinton and former maryland governor martin o'malley both challenged sanders on gun control. >> it's time to stand up and pass comprehensive gun safety legislation. >> the views on gun control in world space is difference in an

>> we are going to win! >> reporter: hillary clinton continued to rally support for her party's nomination moments after last night's debate. >> being the first woman president would be quite a change from the presidents we have had up until this point. >> reporter: the democratic front-runner was pitted against her biggest rival bernie sanders for much of the two-hour event. >> the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your e-mails. >> reporter: sanders who gained the most twitter followers and was the most search candidate during the debate steered the conversation away from controversy and back to the issues. >> you know and i know that if i had to attack hillary clinton viciously it would be on the front pages of the papers. not what the american people want. >> have you ever been to the eastern shore? >> reporter: lower polling candidate martin 0 malli who took sanders to fight on the gun control.

>> this is the opening kickoff and for the first time tonight, people see they have a choice. >> reporter: none of the five candidates on stage mentioned vice president joe biden who has yet to announce whether he will launch a white house bid. >> this race is now moving towards the first votes. it is a moment where it's probably time for a decision. >> reporter: analysts say the vice president is waiting to see how clinton handles her testimony before the house benghazi committee scheduled for later this month. what about biden? the vice president remains a big unknown in the democratic race, given the fact that clinton made no obvious mistakes and sanders was strong last night, some pundits say the debate may have shown that the vice president's window of opportunity to enter the race may have passed. meg? >> don champion in new york for us, thank you. criticism from the republican candidates on twitter was sharp. donald trump writing, sorry, there is no star on the stage tonight. jeb bush likened all of the candidates to a third term in

the vote of obama presidency and mike huckabee served up controversy when he tweeted i trust bernie sanders with my tax dollars like i trust a north korea chef with my all about vertebra door. after some called his tweet racist, huckabee didn't back saying racism exists because we have a sin problem in america, not a skin problem. john dickerson is in las vegas, he'll have more analysis on the democratic debate coming up on "cbs this morning." at least two people were killed when a small plane crashed in palm beach county, florida. the single-engine plane slammed into a mobile home park early tuesday evening. at least one mobile home was destroyed. our local station has a report of one man who desperately tried to save his daughter. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured this video a plane on an angle going down into a lake worth trailer park. seconds after the train descended a fireball and people

snapped these photos of the aftermath. people ran to help. the plane landed on domingo's home and he was home with his daughter and his daughter decided not to go to school tuesday and while she was lying down in her room, he went outside and then he heard the plane. >> translator: i heard it really bad and then it became, boom. fell on top of the house. >> reporter: he said he ran into his house to rescue his daughter. >> translator: the door opened and i was screaming, manny, manny, many. >> reporter: he said the flames and smoke pushed him back and he never heard a sound from his child. >> translator: i went outside and i couldn't do anything else. >> reporter: firefighters told him they are bringing in equipment from miami to remove the plane and look for his daughter. >> translator: that breaks my heart. >> reporter: and it breaks the heart of many in this neighborhood who knew the young woman, now missing in such a bizarre turn of events where a plane fell from the sky and caused such destruction. >> kerry cod reporting. it's unclear how many people

were on the plane. the national transportation safety board expects to begin its investigation this morning. years of appeals are expected after a wisconsin jury ordered a gun shop to pay nearly $6 million to two police officers. a gun sold at badger guns outside of milwaukee was used to shoot the officers in 2009. a lawsuit alleged the shop ignored signs that the gun was being sold for to a buyer who was purchasing it for someone else. >> -- from the start that the business practices were almost nonexistent. there were no policies or procedures, no training, and so -- right away that was pretty clear-cut. >> reporter: authorities say more than 500 guns recovered at crime scenes have been traced back to badger guns. overseas, benjamin netanyahu says he will take a series of aggressive steps to stop the

video taken in a walmart in oakland, california, shows workers trying to put out a fire in the halloween aisle tuesday. an unidentified suspect was taken into custody for allegedly using lighter fluid to start the fire. he was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital before going to jail. there were no other injuries. his motive is unclear. on the cbs "moneywatch" rapper jay-e goes to court. stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, meg. >> reporter: federal reserve said considering where he thinks the economy is headed he thinks inappropriate to raise rates this year. he is the second fed chairman in two days to throw cold water on janet yellen's opinion that the fed should raise interest rates before the end of the year. the impact that a slowing global economy has on profits. stocks finished lower for the

first time in five days. the dow lost just under 50 points. the s&p fell 13, the nasdaq dropped 42. the air traffic controllers union says the shortage of trained controllers has reached crisis level. the union says the faa has failed to reach its hiring level for five years, and at image rate, a chronic shortage of controllers will lead to widespread flight delays. as air traffic increases the number of controllers at its lowest level in 27 years. the faa says the government shutdown and budget cuts closed the training for several months and that delayed training for several classes of controllers. we are learning this morning that federal prosecutors launch a criminal investigation into drug executive martin shherrii. his company increased the surprise of a generic drug.

gasol flips it up. odom cuts in for the finish! lamar odom does it again! >> he's as well known for his 14-year nba career as he is for being part of the kardashian's reality tv circus. but this morning, former basketball star lamar odom is fighting for his life. that is one of the headlines on the morning's newsstands. the las vegas review journal reports odom was found tuesday. this morning, he is being treated in a las vegas hospital. the brothel's owner says odom had been drinking and taking an herbal viagra supplement. he has battled substance abuse in the past. "the new york times" report planned parenthood is changing its policy on providing fetal tissue.

it would no longer accept reimbursement for the costs of providing the fetal issue. the group has been under attack for the months after the raels of undercover videos. the videos led to an unsuccessful republican effort in congress to end its federal funding. the baltimore sun reports on a police sergeant suspended after video surfaced showing him apparently sitting on a suspect. >> get off me!
