>> it's one of those days where you feel good. >> halfway point of the workweek. we'll go with that. rise and shine. danielle, speaking of smiling and happy, look at you. >> i always try to bring a little sunshine. the sun will be shining this morning opinion enjoy it while it lasts because the clouds build in throughout the day today. it is a mild start as you are stepping out this morning. temperatures for most of us are running in the mid-50s. it's 60 in boston. 55 in marshfield and upper 50s to lower 60s on the cape and island as well. skies have cleared out, too. we have a few scattered clouds on the cape and a few more well north and west of that. that cloud cover is going to build in during the course of the late afternoon and morning. sunrise is 6:55. building clouds 65 through lunchtime and lower 60s for the ride home. there may be a stray shower but will be isolated. we'll talk about the coldest air of the season when it comes in. first, traffic and weather together.

good morning, robi. >> good morning, danielle. it's quiet out there. that's normal out there. about south of boston. taunton. 24 southbound at route 140, that's exit 12 down there. the left lane is blocked. we're not seeing any kind of backup there yet. it's too early for that but chris, kathryn? news this morning. a car shot at on 495 in wrentham overnight. >> let's get right to susie steimle live in foxboro with more on this. what can you tell us, susie? >> reporter: kathryn, i can tell you probably the most remarkable part about the story is that no one was hurt. this driver called police and reported he was shot at on 495 and able to pull over safely. if you take a look at the video, you can see his sedan

was completely shattered from gunshots that were fired. initial reports indicate that it was at least three shots that were fired at this car. it happened around 11:00 on the southbound side of the highway just before exit 15. police spent their time overnight looking for ballistics and trying to track down a suspect. so far, they've been unsuccessful in that endeavor. no arrests have been made. one of the more important things to mention, though, police do believe that this was targeted and not random. we will bring you more information as it becomes available, but for now, live in foxboro, susie steimle, wbz news this morning. we're also following a developing story right now. former nba star lamar odom was rushed to a las vegas hospital after he was found unresponsive at a brothel in nevada. there are reports that odom is in critical condition right now

he has had substance abuse problems in the past. his ex-wife and her family were heading to be by his side. a man preying on a local church. surveillance video capturing him breaking in and wearing the priest clothing. police say the cameras also caught him acting inappropriately. >> the search continues this morning to find out who the man is. we have reaction this morning. hi, nicole. >> reporter: hi there, chris. good morning, kathryn. church, of course, is normally a place where many come to find comfort and peace of mind. one latest visitor here had something else completely different in mind, and it was all caught on video. let's take a look here. this is inside st. serbian church that captured a man well after hours dressed as a priest and imitating the role of the priest until he was seen disrobing and performing an inappropriate act in the altar

there was a break-in, in the church that same night a few hours earlier. while authorities were going through that surveillance this. the church had to call in the bishop and have a special consecration. needless to say, everyone's disgusted. >> you are just confused as to why somebody would do this. >> reporter: we're told the intruder accessed that robe through the kitchen area. no one from the church seems to really recognize this guy, but certainly police are hoping anyone with information will give them a call. morning. a medford detective caught on dash cam video threatening a driver has resigned rather than going through a disciplinary hearing. stephen lebert was off duty when he approached a driver in july for making a wrong turn in the rotary and threatened to

shoot that driver in the head. he was placed on administrative scheduled for tomorrow. this wasn't the first time he's been in trouble. he was recorded a few years ago taunting a man who was recording his brother's arrest. a high schoolteacher is off the job while police investigate a domestic violence claim that he strangled and threatened someone. greater lowell technical high school has put 57-year-old james page on administrative leave and banned him from campus. we're told the incident does not involve a student. the teenager accused of killing his math teacher will undergo a mental evaluation today. the court psychologist says the 16-year-old has been unresponsive during two previous attempts to evaluate him. yesterday, the judge stopped jury selection when chism's lawyer raised concerns whether he was competent to stand trial.

aaron hernandez's next murder trial. prosecutors and defense attorneys asked the judge to postpone jury selection. it's set for mid-january now. he's charged with killing two men in the south end in 2012. now to campaign 2016, the democrats holding their first presidential debate. hillary clinton and bernie sanders facing off while the party's three lesser known candidates did get in some face time. here's bree with a breakdown of the night's big moments. >> reporter: governor chafety, governor o'malley and senator webb had a big opportunity to introduce themselves to the greater american public but most the debate did turn to secretary clinton and senator sanders. if you watch debates for a boxing match, this one was pretty tame. >> enough of the e-mails! let's talk about the real issues.

divided than the republicans in terms of principles. they just have different ideas for achieving the same goals. they did have a sixth podium but vice president joe biden has yet to enter the race. students and parents of brookline made another attempt to save a teacher's job. chen received a termination notice from the outgoing superintendent after someone overheard him swearing in front school. >> i don't think he should be fired for saying a swear because let's face it, every middle schooler swears. >> more than 170 students have job. homeowners along the coast are seeing a flood of relief. nine communities will share $10 million in grants and low- interest loans. they prevent flooding during

some incredible images from the hubble space telescope. the photo shows the veil nebula. >> scientists say the structure formed thousands of years ago when a star, 20 times larger than the sunp died in a super nova explosion. hubbell first took pictures about 18 years ago, but the new images show how the gas cloud has expanded since then. >> really cool to see there. >> science is very cool. >> i'm just amazed at the images that they can get. everything with mars, too, that was recently in the headlines, that was incredible as well. we need to get a check of your forecast. morningp. >> for sure.

with a lot of the rain that pushed through, you guys. the radar scopes are quiet, and we are in for a quiet morning drive. your evening commute as well. it's kind of a mild start. the dew point is in the upper 40s. we've brought in air. the wind out of the west at 10 miles per hour right now. temperatures for most of the rest of us are running in the 50s, too. so not as chilly as we've been in mornings past. 52 in worcester and keene right now. upper 50s on the cape with clear skies overhead. for many of us, we have scattered clouds over the cape and islands. there are additional clouds back to our north and west. the sunshine we'll have you'll want to enjoy it because the clouds build in through the remainder of the day today. notice a couple of green blips, too. there may be a sprinkle or isolated shower that will pass through the reach been i late today. notice we're in the 30s in

we won't get that cold tonight, but we are talking temperatures that will dip into the 30s as we head into the weekend for some overnights. meantime, building clouds. not a big deal, most of us won't see it. heading into the day tomorrow, mostly sunny, beautiful. light west-southwest breeze. upper 60s today. day tomorrow. and friday, we start with some clouds in the morning then increasing during the afternoon with some scattered showers passing from west to east. so friday will feature some wet weather. as we head into the start of the weekend, colder air starts to spill in. there may be a passing shower again on saturday, and then the coldest air of the season arrives on sunday. so highs today still above average. mid to upper 60s, boston norwood. it'll be cooler 62 in worcester. 47 downtown. some of the coldest suburbs

shoulder is blocked at exit 2 on 24 southbound. not seeing any significant backup down there yet, though. chris, kathryn? we are talking about the democratic debate last night. candidates facing off in their first debate of the season. >> this morning, jon keller looks at who came out on top. >> reporter: good morning. did you catch last night's first democratic presidential candidate debate of the season? it took some doing. cnn violated a cardinal rule of tv debates. opening statements are a total turnoff. with all due respect to sheryl crow, we could have done without her rendition of the national anthem. this was not a baseball game. like any debate this was as much about style. if you are with i abernie sanders admirer yesterday, familiar with his democratic socialist politics and unpolished speaking style, you are still one today. and he got what may have been the biggest cheer of the night when he said to hillary clinton

"the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your e-mails." the crowd loved that, and so did hillary. in fact, she had to love everything about last night. the former senator and secretary of state was easily the most accomplished debater on stage. none of the criticisms tossed her way by sanders or the three other candidates rattled her in the slightest. she expertly mixed policy knowledge with populous and personal references that are just the sort of thing people look for to determine if a candidate is someone they can realty to. she actually interacted with her opponents in an easy way the others couldn't match. hillary clinton remains a polarizing figure, even within her own party. she has a long way to go to win the nomination, let alone the presidency. last night, the only woman on the stage was also the only obviously presidential figure.

route 3 south looks okay coming down from lowell. chris and kathryn? state police searching for the gunman who shot at a car on 495 in wrentham. someone fired several shots at the car near exit 15 late last night. the driver's okay. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you an update coming up in 15 minutes. police are hoping someone recognizes the man seen in this surveillance video from inside of a cambridge church. the man is seen wandering around the church early one morning last month and later he performed an inappropriate act. police say the man is in his 20s. nearby schools and businesses have been warned to lock their doors. learning new details about the murder of a marshfield man.

say the lawyer wasn't killed but died by accident. prosecutors say he killed robert mckenna and his girlfriend concealed evidence. he says the death was an accident but prosecutors say he appeared to confess involvement in a later conversation with the witness. >> it's not what you think. he did it to himself by falling through the picture window. he then indicated to the witness where the injury had been sustained. >> police are still searching for another person involved in this murder. and getting the first full- time medical director. dr. linda sager, a pediatrician from umass medical school will take on the position. the doctor will ensure every child placed in foster care

a week of placement and follow- up exams every month. at the statehouse, solitary confinement with some of the strictest segregation policies in the country. they'll testify to reduce the use and encourage corrections officials to track and publish records of its use. the pilgrim nuclear power plant is shutting down, and it's not just important for the people who live near it. bree is now back with a closer look at what the decision means hi, bree. >> the operations at the 43- year-old facility in plymouth will phase out in 2019 because the operators say the plant is no longer financially viable. their jobs. it's not clear if the plant will run at 100% until its final shutdown. pilgrim has been controversial since it opened in 1972,

nearby concerned about its safety. it powers 600,000 homes. a combination of low oil and gas prices and costly repairs doomed the plant's future. as for the impact of the closing, well, first, more pollution. governor baker points out pilgrim's closure will cost the state a carbon-free source of energy and could see a power shortage when demand gets high. it powers 10% of the state's power so that could be enough. energy analysts say the power we do get will cost more. >> we're concerned that its closure may lead to higher costs, higher prices, and higher power bills. in new england, we already have some of the highest power prices anywhere in the country. >> reporter: another issue at play is real estate. residents near the plant had been complaining for years that it drags down property values. if the waste remains stored there permanently, homeowners

welcome back. it is 5:39 right now. air bnb is holding a contest that might be perfect if you like halloween. >> plus, uber leaking information for almost 1,000 drivers. jill wagner has today's money watch. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a data breach at uber. the company accidentally exposed the driver's licenses and social security numbers for about 1,000 of its drivers. they logged on to an app designed to give information about the job but accidentally released that info. twitter has cut 8% of its workforce, which is 336 people. some found out when they tried logging onto their work e-mail and realized they'd been locked out. ceo jack dorsey says the company needs to make changes

passing showers possible friday and again on saturday. each cold front brings in the coldest air of the season is on tap for this weekend, especially by sunday with high temperatures that will only top out in the upper 40s. to put that in perspective is 60. our highs will be in the 50s. 55 right now lawrence and nashua. upper 50s on the capes. skies have cleared out overnight. even a few clouds across new york, northern new england, a few scattered clouds on the cape as well. there's another cold front that's fairly weak back to the west. a couple of sprinkles along with it as well. notice behind it temperatures fall into the 30s. we won't get that cold tonight but you get the idea temperatures will be falling behind the front. enjoy the sunshine while we have it this morning because the clouds will win out at times today as they build in. they'll look a little threatening and one or two of those clouds may produce an isolated brief, passing shower

later on today. overnight today, the skies clear back out. tomorrow looks beautiful. temperatures still on par for where we should be. friday morning we start with sunshine and then the clouds build in. scattered showers build in from west to east. so it's brief and may slow down for the evening commute. colder air for the upcoming weekend. so around the region today, not as warm as yesterday. we hit 72 in boston. we should be in the lower 60s this time of the year. we won't be there in worcester at least at the airport in the monadnock region. plymouth comes close. norwood is shy. tonight, a few scattered clouds. upper 30s in some of the cooler suburbs. high temperatures tomorrow.
