grandmother faced her family and his punishment. barbara coyne killed for drug member. >> beth r is live outside the courthouse of this was such an emotional day for the victim's family reporter: it was david and there were powerful words directed at killer timothy kostka who prosecutors say broke into this south boston home knowing there was valuable fishing equipment inside for drug money. his victim barbara coyne incredibly was able to give a description of her attacker just before she died. >> i wish, i hope she knows how proud i was of her or i am of her. reporter: barbara coyne's son rickie the one who found her that april morning 3 years ago inside her south boston amount in a pool of blood. her killer timothy kostka headed to prison for life. >> she had enough sense to get

fingernails to do her part so he could never harm another family again. reporter: as kostka stared stone faced coyne's family gave heart written ofing victim impact statements wanting to remember the 67-year-old retired nurse who had battled cancer as a loving mother and grandmother not a murder victim. >> her blood is running alive and thriving in my veins not sustained on a window curtain or stored in a cold dark room. the anger and trauma of what i have experienced will never go away. reporter: prosecutors say kostka a heroin addict was looking for a quick fix when he broke into coyne's home where she caught him rifling through jewelry boxes. she was repeatedly stabbed and over powered in an attempt to fight back. >> i know that if you had just asked her she would have helped you. she did that for everybody. reporter: instead prosecutors say he left and cashed in her winning lottery ticket for $152

>> the rage and pain what this monster did to my family i allow it to strengthen me. reporter: barbara coyne's son said not life in prison is not enough given what the family has gone through. why the district attorney says kostka's desperation should frighten everyone. thank you beth. murder suspect phillip chism is refusing to enter the courtroom. his lawyers say he's not competent to stand trial until that question is asked jury selection is on hold. he's accused of raping and killing his teacher colleen ritzer. jim smith is live in salem with what happened in court. reporter: lisa, we never actually saw phillip chism but we did get a chilling glimpse into his personality. that came from the testimony of a psychologist. but prosecutors say chrisism is

>> he does not want to come into the courtroom. reporter: when court began there was somebody missing the defendant himself. phillip chism letting court officers know he wasn't coming out. >> his back was facing me. identified. he shook his head no. reporter: he stayed in a back room listening while a psychologist described a bizarre 75 minute meeting with the accused who says he hears voices and wishes someone would shoot him. >> he's not paying attention to what's being discussed because he can't listen to it instead he thinks about other things. when prompted for what that might be he says that he was thinking that somebody he hoped that somebody would come in with a gun and shoot him. reporter: chism now 16 was 14 and a freshman at danvers high when list say he followed his math teacher colleen ritzer into a bathroom where they say he raped and murdered her. prosecutors say chism is faking his strange behavior. >> .

like we could be in the 40s. eric already shocked everyone yesterday when he mentioned snow flurries. >> it starts to the north and works its way southward. we are getting a little cooler each day compared to this time yesterday. about 3 to as much as 9 degrees cooler. that's the trend as we head through the next few. tomorrow looking at lower 60s closer to 60 on friday. into the 50s on saturday staying in the 40s by sunday and into monday. so we're definitely getting to that time of year. winter in a way starts to send warning shots across the bow. the clouds will start to clear out not much active weather across the eastern united states. we're looking at temperatures falling through the 40s. we'll be much cooler tomorrow morning compared to what we woke up to this morning. after all this couple of cold fronts bring a chance for rain as we head tossed the weekend. we'll talk more about the timing coming up. appreciate it thank you so much eric. there may have been 5 candidates up on stage during last night's democratic

presidential debate with but as expected it was a showdown between two. hillary clinton and bernie sanders. front runners further separating themselves from the rest. john yesterday you were telling us at the desk you your expectations for the debate. did the candidates deliver here let's start with hillary clinton. >> i thought she exceeded expectations last night easily she was poised and articulate while some may well have found her too slick and programmed i didn't see a moment where she seemed caught off guard or unprepared. casual observers who have been hearing complaints about secretary clinton's campaign performance so far may come away from last night wondering what the beef was. on the downside her changing positions on issues like the iraq war, the pacific trade deal were highlighted last night and that won't help the negative views some people have of her trustworthy necessary.

>> bernie sanders did he have an effective contrast to hillary last night? >> i really thought he did. if you're an angry voter who liens to the left there was no doubt who was best channeling your views on stage last night. i wasn't surprised to see post debate focus group sanders got high marks for expressing passion and principle. the moment where he dismissed the clinton e-mail story right there that was a nice positive touch for him. it made me wonder if and when he intends to draw sharper comparisons between himself and the frontrunner. at some point you've got to do that. of course cnn talked about this idea they were going to have this virginia podium in case joe biden decided to go running in there. where does that stand now? >> nothing new today on that from the vice-president. just a statement that he was quote proud of the candidates last night, but keep in mind, the rational for late entry by baden was to fill a void left by the implosion of the clinton campaign after last fight that

seems unlikely to happen and that could pretty much keep biden on the sidelines. you never know with joe. >> she was strong enough last night maybe he says it's not for me. >> it's going to be a tougher slough than it might have been otherwise. >> appreciate it. twitter erupted during last night's debate people showing support for all the candidates. some of the tweets meant for one candidate in particular caught our eye. >> that's right david. this is democratic presidential candidate martino mally. and matt o'malley politicians with similar names. some even tweeted the boston city council or megan wright bernie sanders seems more energetic than matt o'malley democrat debate. boston city council or took it all in stride he had fun with that comment. he wrote back to megan of course he's more energetic i'm sitting on my couch watching the debate.

his life. found unconscious tuesday by two prostitutes at a nevada brothel. >> they saw him at 6:00 this morning he was fine. he was going to sleep, and then at 3:30 this afternoon they went to check on him and he was unconscious. reporter: dennis off is the owner of the love ranch a legal brothel. he said odom had been there since saturday and had been drinking cognac and using herbal viagra. >> we called 191-6789 they said roll him's his left side reporter: then a complication trying to ghetto domestic to the hospital. >> they said that he was in bad shape. they thought he might not make it and they were going to air flight him to las vegas. but he didn't fit in the helicopter. reporter: the 6'10", former nba forward had to be driven 60 miles by ambulance. odom was married to reality star chloe kardashian for four years. they were in the midst of a

we're quite frightened by the idea of going into the 40s. >> i don't know why. we have emotional scars from last cold season. >> no. >> certainly it's good wood chopping weather if you're getting ready for a fireplace in the weekend where temperatures drop. 66 degrees in the city dew point much lower than what we saw yesterday. it was very humid outside yesterday when that front moved through brought in drier air overnight. 5 degrees the cool spot in worcester. a little cooler still off to the north and west. that is the theme for this week each day just a little bit of progressive change eventually we bottom out on sunday. clouds are in that cold pool of air across the northeast. they dissipate through the overnight hours. we'll see the starlight overnight. tomorrow really a great day to be outdoors. lot of sunshine. some clouds will start to move their way in as we head toward the evening but not many of them. certainly a great october day. it's friday, but the next cold front starts to approach. brings with it a few scattered showers throughout the day on friday.

day we want to grab an umbrella be prepared for changing weather. a couple of clouds this evening temperatures in the upper 30 to mid 40s in the suburbs. upper '40s in downtown boston tonight. tomorrow as we mentioned great day it will be chilly but bright out the door. sunrise is close to 7:00 a.m. it's pretty dark in the morning. midday mostly sunny. high temps in the low 60s across the area which is exactly ample for this time of the season. our sunset is at 6:03 tomorrow evening. high 62 in boston 63 norwood. worcester upper 50s as well southwestern new hampshire. hyannis up to 60 for tomorrow afternoon. it's about this progression of fronts moving through. we've had this one bringing in some cooler air that settles in tonight. tomorrow morning is chillier than this morning. next front approaches on friday so we start to bring in the cool blue and saturday another front moves in with showers that brings in the barney

colors we don't like barney colors around here. it's going to be a very chilly sunday afternoon and it should bring in our first freeze of the season. maybe getting down to 32 degrees in the city of boston. would that be unusual, no not particularly. the earliest on record is october 5th. so we'll be west past that. on average it's november 4th. there can be a big change on either side of it. there is a chance we might stay at 33, 34 degrees in downtown boston. we'll be quite chilly and many have not seen a frost yet. if we get it on the 19th, which would be monday morning that would be very late. a nice long growing season at the tail end of. accuweather 7-day. 50s on saturday with showers, sunday 40ed and a gusty northwest wind coldest morning is monday morning just a sign the season is starting to change. >> that's right. we'll feel it. all right eric thanks. boeing may soon be traveling even lighter. the company says it has created the lightest metal ever made of 99.99% air.
