8:02 am
down into the 20s from pittsburgh to worcester. boston, probably about 33 tomorrow, so i don't think there will be a hard freeze or a frost in the city. but west roxbury, brighton, you'll have freezes tomorrow morning. here we go with snow showers across the great lakes as the cold air goes over the relatively warm great lakes. that produces the snow showers and that is just the beginning of the lake effect machine. we had a couple of cold fronts go by the area over the past couple of days. that ushered in the cold air. eventually high pressure off towards the south will move further east. the return flow around it brings back milder air. that's going to happen during the middle part of the week. the foliage tracker shows we've got peak foliage running from northern maine all the way back down through new hampshire and vermont and even into the berkshires. we still have pretty good color, 50 to 75% in our immediate western suburbs. a little less than that toward the southeastern part of the state.

upper 40s, lower 50s. might be a sprinkle, but lot of events going on. if you want to eat, head down there. looks like a good one. >> dave, thank you so much. well, a plymouth man is under arrest for operating under the influence after driving nearly 20 miles the wrong way on route 3. yeah, 20 miles. police say this man here, kevin palmer, crashed into a car heading north in borne. fortunately, nobody was hurt in the crash, but palmer kept going. state police eventually shut down the highway and deployed stop sticks on the road. they arrested palmer after two of his tires blew out near the sagamore bridge. a massachusetts state trooper injured when his cruiser was hit by a truck on the pike has been released from the hospital. the trooper was at a construction detail near exit 17 in newton center when he was hit around 10:00 last night. police say the cruiser was hit from behind and then pushed into the median.

failing to move over for the stopped cruiser and construction detail. an amber alert that began in pennsylvania ended in boston a few hours later with the arrest of a mother who had a very sick little baby. wbz's christina hager shows us how a nurse at children's hospital helped solve the case. >> reporter: children's hospital. this is where 36-year-old mom tiffany cherry wanted her 2- month-old son quava to get medical care, and nowhere else. >> does it surprise you someone would want to come here? >> i think as a parent, you want the best care for your children. do whatever you need to. massachusetts state police sent out pictures of the car, make and model they were looking for with cherry's license plate, a nurse at children's recognized cherry. it all began in pitston, pennsylvania where a doctor trauma care.

hospital, she drove nearly five hours to boston. according to the police report, after getting the runaround, she was advised the baby had to be admitted to the hospital. the suspect stated she then took the baby back to boston. >> that was my assumption as a mother, if i felt like i needed to get the best care, this is where i would have went. >> certainly the best place for the best care in the world. my son was there last night himself. we were, we're very pleased with the care that he got there. >> reporter: as a result of all of this, cherry now faces child endangerment charges out of pittston, pennsylvania, but also had open warrants here in massachusetts she'll now have to take care of. prostitution and driving violations over the last 13 years. meantime, the department of children and families has custody of her baby boy. in boston, christina hager, wbz news. well, if you're saving for your child's college education, how would you like to save 25%? sounds pretty good, huh? northeastern says it will offer

that discount to siblings and parents of current students who decide to sign up for classes at the school, according to the globe. the discounted tuition applies to more than 100 graduate programs. western new england university family discount. even with a discount, though, college costs are soaring out of control and that is the topic of today's keller at large. >> reporter: well, good morning. here's a rhetorical question. do you care about having an affordable quality college education available for your kids or others now and in the future? of course you do. well, if so, this interview is for you this morning. our guest is in his fourth month as president of the umass system. he's former congressman and former umass lowell chancellor, marty meyen. >> good to be here.
8:19 am
is it okay if i call you martin or marty? >> martin works well. just don't call me mr. president. >> okay. affordability is the top of mind issue for everyone when it comes to college. you walked into this job at a time of, well, there's always stress on the state college system. >> sure. >> what is the situation now? you were able to get some extra money out of the legislature. is it enough? are we going to see tuition and fees going up again? what's the story? >> well, first of all, we have not gotten the negotiated settlements to pay union employees. the legislature was supposed to give us that. the house has. unfortunately, we haven't gotten that money yet. so we are a university that is dealing with some tough issues. >> what's the hold-up? you got stan rosenberg from amhurst sitting on top of the senate. >> right, and the senate unfortunately hasn't funded it yet. we'll wait to see what happens with negotiations with the house and the senate.
8:20 am
the bottom line, i think there's always going to be stress in terms of university and funding. but, you know, you look at umass. over the last three years, fees and tuition have increased an average of 1.6% a year. i can't find a university of massachusetts has increased fees less than that. so it's always a challenging time, but i can tell, you the applications to the university of massachusetts have tripled the last three or four years. so we rank highly in terms of return on investments. forbes magazine rated umass lowell 10th in the country on return on investment. i look at it as being as affordable as we can and also, we want to keep that quality high. we're a world class university, high in the rankings in terms of our national rankings and our world rankings. too. >> here we are in the heart of
8:21 am
say umass football is not off to a good start. 1-4, so far. three of the losses have been huge blowouts. you're locked into a schedule that at the upper echelon of college football that includes carolina, and the globe reported earlier this year that the program that back in 2011 cost the school just over 3 million is projected to cost close to 9 million this year. in light of all of this and the stress on finances that you just alluded to it, are you reassessing some of the recent decisions that have been made about umass football? >> well, the athletic department at amhurst has a plan to generate revenue to support football. we did lose to notre dame, but it was a nationally televised game that 4.5 million people viewed in on. so there are some advantages. we're going to constantly be evaluating what we're doing in football.
8:22 am
athletics in many ways is a front porch of a university. it's a window into a university. the umass amhurst campus has a game plan and i think we should see how it plays out. >> does the game plan include continuing to play games at gillette, which have been poorly attended? >> some, some have been attended pretty well. 30,000 employees -- sorry. 30,000 fans for a game against bc. we had close to that against unh. it's a matter of building the program. attendance needs to increase, but we also need to play more games on the campus. >> mr. president-- >> i thought you weren't going to do that. >> i'm sorry. at what cost? >> i think when there's a new analysis of how football is doing, it will be different than what the analysis was in the globe in that they are playing teams, getting revenue from that. they need to continue to build their program. winning helps. they need to find a conference
8:23 am
to play in, but that -- there is a game plan in place. place. time. but we don't intend to take revenue away from the academic side of the institution. the academics are more important than athletics, as important as athletics are. you look a the eisenberg school academically, that's an institution that has never been held as high up in terms of reputation status. >> we've got to take a break. when we continue, more with the president of the umass college system, marty meyen. stand by.
8:24 am
8:25 am
. welcome back. we're talking about marty meyen, president of the university of massachusetts. marty, you have said it's a priority for you since you took over a few months ago, to build residence halls, dorms at umass boston. why? >> because umass boston is a large university. it's the only university its size without residence halls. students who live in residence halls, they are part of academic programing within the residence halls, have a higher likelihood of graduating on time, higher likelihood of academic success. that's statistically true everywhere. the other thing that's interesting about this, think about it, it's the only university in new england that is minority/make majority. to say they don't deserve to
8:26 am
programing around housing is just wrong. students who go to umass boston ought to have the same opportunity that students who attend other universities do, to be part of academic programing, to study in cohorts of student, improve academic success and get them to graduate on time. >> a couple of years ago, carl selles, a student at umass, wrote an op ed and made interesting points. i think they are still relevant. >> when did he write this? >> couple of two years ago. he noted the diversity of the umass student body, by age, pace. he called the place a treasure. he wrote, quote, you're basically, by building dorms, grabbing that treasure away from the community and putting it on a silver platter for traditional college kids who want to drink, smoke weed, et cetera. what's your response to that? >> there are a thousand beds proposed.
8:27 am
it's consistent with mayor walsh's plan to get-- students? >> almost out of 20,000. go ahead. amount. but the number of new freshmen students to umass boston is increasing dramatically. enrollment is increasing dramatically. those students who attend umass boston ought to have a right to a high-quality academic experience. part of that academic experience is living on campus. when i got to lowell, 75% of one of the reasons why we increase academic success was we provided more academic programing and more beds on campus. it's just wrong not to have students who go to umass boston have that opportunity. >> well, look, you have one of the most important jobs in the state in terms of quality of life in the future of this state. we look forward to having you back here on a regular basis to talk about umass issues. >> sounds great. always love to come back. >> thanks. marty meyen, president of umass. now back to my colleagues for
8:28 am
more wbz news. >> gentlemen, thank you so much. dave has a look at our forecast. he always brings me things. this time, he brings me this funky zucchini. is that what it is? >> well, it's a different kind. it's like a telephone. i was running around yesterday, as i know a the lot of other folks were. got to pull the tomatoes off, the beans, anything that's going to freeze. kale can stay out, which is great, and some of the onions can stay out, my onion tops, things like that. got to get stuff in. >> and you got to plant garlic now. that was a good tip. >> plant it now and you'll have it next summer. let's take a look at what's going on outside right now. it is chilly, but it is going to warm up next week, folks. if you put the heat on, you know, i was getting tweets earlier today saying no, i can't put the heat on yet! my wife will kill me! here's the thing. a, we won't be as cold as last winter.
8:29 am
b, heating oil is 33% less than last year, so, you know, splurge a little bit. mild air moves in. that happens during the middle that's the good news. we did have snow this weekend. i was just looking. some places up here had 6 inches. i just got a report right around baxter state park of up to 6 inches of snow. indeed, there has been snow and also coatings back through the adirondacks in the greens and the whites. even in worcester yesterday afternoon, it was just a little bit of snow that did occur. very briefly, a little bit of occur. we'll have a little bit breezy here as we head for this afternoon. definitely knocking temperatures back a little bit from the way it feels. but in general, it is not going to be quite as windy as yesterday. bright and chilly, call it 45, 46, 47 degrees. those winds light now will pick up a little bit during the afternoon hours and overnight
8:30 am
