with the sort of craziness of war, you can lose control and start killing people when you shouldn't be. or-- or you may be ordered to torture. you know, there's a story of a mormon woman, very religious, who was in the military and she was at abu ghraib. and one of the ways they-- they tortured muslim men was that it was-- one of the greatest humiliations was to be naked in front of a strange woman, a non-muslim woman or a stranger, so they put her down in the tank and they stripped the men naked with blindfolds on and then she would be standing there and they'd take the blindfolds off so that they would be humiliated. she was so devastated by having to do that that she killed herself. (smith) while moral injury is as old as war itself, it is a new field of study. some believe it is tied to the high rate of suicide in military veterans. i think the moral injury itself is an indication of a person's humanity. that, for me,
3:01 am
so devastated by something they'd done to violate that core sense of love and care for others that they would kill themselves says something about the power of that spirit. um, that it would rather kill the body than give up that core humanity. (smith) those suffering from moral injury may have symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress, such as depression and suicidal thoughts. they may self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. however, the root causes are different. ptsd is fear-based, while moral injury stems from feelings of guilt and shame. a lot of them will say things like, "god will never forgive me for this." um, you know, "i don't know how i actually could do that." "i can't live with myself." "i'm trying to forget."
3:02 am
"i drink every day so i can forget." (smith) there is no clinical diagnosis for moral injury and it cannot be healed with medicine. (brock) for people who are really struggling with a really profound sense that they're not good anymore, saying it's a psychological problem isn't quite enough. treatment can help, but, really, it's a spiritual problem. (smith) according to brock, to rebuild a moral identity, you need to support of the community. religious institutions are in a unique position to help. every religious tradition has someway, maybe not a very good way at this point, but someway to understand and process people who violate their spirit, their core moral conscience. in buddhism, it's called suffering or attachment. you're attached to things in the wrong way. in christianity and judaism, it's usually called sin. so there's some kind of language in which you feeling like you're not a good person anymore,
3:03 am
that's-- that's something faith understands. (smith) in 2009, brock cofounded the soul repair center at brite divinity school in fort worth, texas. in addition to research and public education, the center trains clergy and clinicians on ways to help those suffering with moral injury. it's a matter of drawing them back to, "okay, where was that set of values? "where-- where did that come from? what was it based on? "um, was it real or imagined? "um, is there really good in this world that can be violated? and if it's violated, how do we get to the good?" if the religious leader and also religious community of faith can present themselves and say, "there's nothing that can't be forgiven "by an almighty, forgiving, loving god. "i know you may have trouble believing that now, "but let's hang together "and tell me what you think may be, "might be unforgivable in your situation, "and i'll listen
3:04 am
and we'll talk it through. we'll go through this together." (smith) moral injury is complex and may not present itself immediately. some of the v.a. people are even saying that moral injury is the worse affliction. because it's more like the slow-burn underneath the fires of ptsd. so that little slow-burn can burn a long time. i remember the values we had. um... and they were good values. (smith) michael killam is a vietnam veteran. (killam) you treated someone like you wanted to be treated. you respected everyone. not because you had to, because you wanted to. um... those values that we had, the only way we could get 'em was to give 'em. that's the only way we learned. and-- and, uh, when i came back from vietnam, they were all gone. (smith) drafted at the age of 18,
quote
he was a door gunner with the u.s. army. (killam) i grew up on a working ranch and i was pretty proficient with guns. i didn't like killing. i didn't like that at all. now, on the farm-- i mean, in the ranch, you know, you had to kill animals. i don't know what it is about humans. i really thought i'd crossed some kind of invisible line. (smith) four months into his tour of duty, he was captured and tortured by the vietcong. he escaped three days later and returned to combat. he served two years and three days. when he returned home, he was a different man. (killam) i don't know what it is about war, but my daddy never told me about war. my granddaddy never told me about war. and now i know why. i've never told anybody about war. i think i lost myself. i think myself was gone. i think everything inside me was taken out.

um... nearly every one of us have been divorced at least once or twice. we all isolated. we couldn't go to a walmart. we couldn't go shopping. we didn't like to be around people. (smith) eight years ago, killam finally got treated for his addiction and is in long-term recovery. with the help of the soul repair center, he is hoping to reclaim that part of him that was lost in the war. (killam) i'm a lot different than i was eight years ago. a lot different. in fact, night and day. but, uh, it's slow and it's over time, but i really do believe now what i lost was myself. (smith) today, killam is a program manager for veterans services in tarrant county, texas. (man yells) he hopes his story helps his brothers- and sisters-in-arms. i want these kids to know that

3:11 am
and they're hosting free lunch and dinner events to provide you access to the training, the support, and the money you need to start profiting from them. that's right. because you'll be working directly with scott and amie's team, their strategic funding partners have given preapproval for you to use $750,000 of their money to do your deals so you don't have to use any of your own cash or credit. and the number of deals new students are doing is amazing. >> in less than four months' time, i've already been able to do 13 deals. >> unbelievable. now, did you have real-estate experience before this? >> no, i didn't. i didn't have any, other than buying my own house. >> ann marie, let me make sure i have this straight. after attending the free event, you've already done 15 deals in 3 1/2 months? >> yes, i have, and i'm very surprised at myself. >> what have you been able to accomplish so far, mike? >> we've done seven deals in about two months, and it's been great. >> so what would you say to viewers?
3:12 am
attend one of these free events? >> it will change your life. just do it. >> hello, everyone. i'm rachelle mccray. it's my pleasure now to introduce you all to the stars of a&e's number-one real-estate show, "flipping vegas," scott and amie yancey. scott and amie, thank you so much for taking a break from your show to be with us today. >> hey, we're happy to be here. >> we're really excited to be here. >> like millions of other viewers, i love your show, "flipping vegas," on the a&e network. and i'm assuming a big network like a&e wouldn't run so many episodes of your show unless the market was red hot, right? >> exactly. >> so, why is right now such an exciting time to profit from real estate? >> well, when the real-estate market bottomed out, of course there were great opportunities to pick up properties for a fraction of the previous value, but it was challenging to flip them because banks really weren't lending to a majority of the buyers, so even if you had the cash, got an incredible deal on a property, there were really few buyers that could actually get financing that you could sell it to.
3:13 am
>> but now prices are steadily on the rise, and banks are lending more, and people are starting to get back on their feet. >> yeah, definitely. the market is becoming very active again. we're definitely experiencing what is called a recovery. and this has created a whole new wave of real-estate opportunities all over the country. >> we just flipped this house behind us, another one on the same street, and one right around the corner. we are profiting from more deals now than ever before. that's how crazy it is. >> yeah, and we're not talking about just the fix-and-flip type of deals that you see us do on our show. we're talking about quick flips where you're in and out of these deals so fast that you never even lift a hammer or touch a paintbrush. >> wow. that sounds exciting. but many of our viewers may not know the first thing about real estate, so how can they start profiting from these deals? >> well, they just need to come to one of our free events. most of the people that attend our events have never done a real-estate deal in their life, but it's okay. we teach from the ground up how to get started and profit on their very first deal. >> we've also done this long enough to know that people who
3:14 am
are watching may be thinking, "well, that's great. they'll teach me how to do it, but i don't have the money or the credit to be a real-estate investor." >> well, guess what -- neither did i when i got started. i used no cash of my own, no credit of my own, and i made over $2.3 million my first year out on my own as a full-time real-estate investor. >> that's incredible. >> it is incredible. and what's really cool, when i started using scott's strategies, i made $186,000 on my first deal. i went on to make $200,000 on my second deal, all without using any of our own cash or credit. >> now, of course, not every student that comes to our events makes millions their first year. most students just start off with one or two smaller deals while keeping their full-time job, and they build momentum from there. >> so tell us, then, how can the average person watching right now start doing this if they have no investment capital or credit? >> well, the same way we got our start and still do many of our deals today -- by using our money partners. >> we call them our strategic-funding partners.
3:15 am
the money, and we flip them. >> hold on. you're telling me that all of our viewers that come to one of your free events will have the opportunity to work with your funding partners? >> absolutely. >> all of you watching, when you come to one of our free events, our team will show you how to find the best deals in your area, how to do the deals, and you'll learn how to get access to $750,000 of preapproved funding so you can actually start doing deals right now. >> scott and amie and their money partners have already been doing this all over the u.s. with people just like you. in fact, at one of their recent events in another city, students from all over the country gathered to share their success stories, and we sent our reporter, angela scott, there to get a firsthand look at their extraordinary results. >> hey, everyone! i'm angela scott. in addition to my background in news and reporting, i'm also a licensed real-estate agent. and i have to tell you, in all my years in real estate, i have never seen anything quite as
3:16 am
exciting as what's going on right now in these events. by providing people with the knowledge and the money to do deals, scott and amie and their money partners have opened up the real-estate world everyone. people with no real-estate experience who normally would have never had the chance or the money to get into real estate are doing it. >> jeanie, what was the most exciting thing that you discovered when you got to the free event? >> i think the most exciting thing is that there's so many different ways to make money in real estate, and many of them, you don't have to use your own money, and a lot of them, you don't have to do any labor, like in rehabs. >> now, i understand that you're fairly new at this, but i also understand that you have some deals already under your belt? >> yes, i've completed five deals in the first 2 1/2 months. >> that is impressive. warner and ann, you're fairly new to the program, but i understand that you've already had some great accomplishments. can you tell me about that? >> we were able to complete five
3:17 am
>> five deals in nine weeks -- you heard that right. sherry and paul, what motivated you to attend the free event? >> well, we were looking for a way to generate income in our retirement years, and we thought real-estate investing would be an excellent opportunity to do that. >> so how many deals have you done? >> well, we actually did nine deals in nine weeks. >> unbelievable. nine weeks? did you ever think you could have this success in just such a short amount of time? >> things have happened a lot faster than i guess we first envisioned, but we're very pleased about that. >> coming up, i have so many more success stories i want to share with you. but first, here's how to reserve a table for you and a guest to attend one of scott and amie's free lunch or dinner events coming to your area. >> announcer: get ready in your local area for an opportunity to profit from real estate like you've never seen before. the rebounding real-estate market in the u.s. is getting hot, creating a whole new wave

3:21 am
how many deals they are doing. >> so, guido and kat, did you have any real-estate investing experience before you actually attended one of these free events? >> no, none whatsoever. that was a completely new world to us. >> that was a new world. so what have you been able to accomplish so far? >> we have been able to close on two deals within a short two-month time period. >> so, dale and kim, i understand that you had a pretty exciting goal in mind when you came to one of the free events. >> sure did. i was looking to get out of my present job, looking for a change. >> so, looking for a change, how many deals have you done? >> we've done four deals so far. >> four deals so far. tammy, i understand that you're fairly new to this, but you've already had a lot of success. >> yes, we've done eight deals in a little over two months. >> unbelievable. so what would you say has been your favorite part about this opportunity? >> i think, how simple it was, and that i work full-time and i don't have a lot of spare time at all to do this, and i tried it on my own with not much success and spent hours and hours and hours.
3:22 am
and it's been so simple using this program. >> so, what would you say to those viewers at home that are maybe working 40, 50 hours a week, and they say, "i literally don't have an extra hour in my day"? >> check out this program. i don't have an extra hour in my day, and i've done eight deals so far and looking forward to more. >> scott and amie, your free events, they sound incredible. you both have made amazi money doing real-estate deals all around the country, and now, of course, you have the number-one real-estate show on the a&e network, "flipping vegas," and that follows you around as you continue to make money on even more deals. you are very successful, and you're obviously very busy. so i have to ask you -- what inspired you to start hosting these free events? >> well, it was actually a couple things. first of all, we get thousands of e-mails from our viewers, e-mails from people who see our tv show and want us to teach them how to profit from real estate where they live. >> and we would never have enough hours in a day to help everyone individually, so we
3:23 am
started kicking around the idea of doing live events so we could help more people at one time. >> and at the same time, we also knew our funding partners were really happy working with us and were looking to fund even more deals. >> so we came up with the perfect solution. we'd host live events to provide students the training and support they need... >> our funding partners would provide preapproved funding for their deals. >> and everyone wins. >> yes. >> well, by the number of success stories you're creating and the number of deals your students are doing right out of the gates, i'd say your solution is clearly working. this sounds like a win-win situation for everyone. but this is such a unique opportunity, something that i've never seen before. so, do you find that some people might be a little skeptical at first? >> yeah, they can be at first, but it's just because of what they've experienced in the past is all. in fact, at some of our events, we ask everyone, "how many of you have ever seen other real-estate programs that promise that you could make money using no cash or credit of your own?" >> just about everybody in the
3:24 am
if any of them, have actually done a deal. >> yeah, and it's because those other real-estate programs just teach the concepts of how to profit in real estate with none of your own cash or credit. but what we do differently is we give you support and the access to the cash that you actually need to go out there and start doing deals. >> you may be thinking this sounds too good to be true, but here's the facts. our money partners have already funded more than $205 million worth of deals for new students. >> our free events are providing people who never thought they could get involved with real estate with direct access to the training and the money they need to do an amazing amount of deals very quickly. >> so, paul and leona, i understand that you didn't have a lot of money to invest before you came to the free event. >> no, we didn't. >> but that didn't stop you. >> no, it didn't. there was money partners that were available for us to be able to make deals. >> and how long did it take to do your first deal? >> five weeks. >> unbelievable.
3:25 am
>> we've done six. >> six deals -- not having money to invest up front. i mean, that is unbelievable to me. >> so, terry, what was going on in your life before you attended the free event? >> before i went to the free work. i'd lost my job. i think it was two or three months prior to that. and i was looking for something else to do to replace my job. >> so you replaced the job, and what have you been able to accomplish in that time? >> since then, i've, uh... made 13 different deals, all in less than four months' time. >> 13 deals -- 4 months' time -- unbelievable. now, did you have real-estate experience before this? >> no, i didn't. i didn't have any, other than buying my own house. >> well, i have to say, this sounds like an incredible opportunity. you're making me want to come to one of your free events and learn how to start profiting from real estate myself. >> and you should. you'd love it. and here's what's really exciting. flipping is just the beginning of what you learn, because we
3:26 am
some of their profits from flipping to buy and hold rental properties that create monthly cash flow. >> because unlike flips that just pay you once, cash-flow properties can supply you with that long-term monthly income we all want. >> so, bettie, what brought you to the free event? >> well, i was looking for an opportunity to have passive income so that i could retire in a few years. >> and what have you been able to accomplish thus far? >> so far, i've purchased some rental homes and have income on a monthly basis, a positive income. it's been great. >> okay, i have to ask. how many deals have you done? >> i've purchased three homes. >> three homes. and how long did that take? >> about 2, 2 1/2 months from the time i first came to an event. >> 2 1/2 months. i mean, 75 days to have three deals done already. that is incredible. >> it's wonderful.
3:27 am
every month is exciting. >> so, fred, what were you looking to achieve when you attended the free event? >> you know, i was looking for independence -- financial independence. and i come from the corporate world, so i do a lot of traveling overseas, working 7:00 to 7:00. this is my opportunity to really get some independence of my time and financial. >> so let's talk financial. how successful have you been? >> within three months, i purchased three properties that are turning positive cash flow. >> i know there are people sitting right there at home saying, "i am stuck in this corporate world. i want independence just like fred." what would you tell them about the free event? >> i would strongly encourage them to go. it's a great learning experience. real estate is really the way to go. >> you heard it right here. real estate is the way to go. financial freedom and independence. >> announcer: get ready in your local area for an opportunity to profit from real estate like you've never seen before. the rebounding real-estate market in the u.s. is getting hot, creating a whole new wave of real-estate opportunities. in fact, the average financial

everyone to join in and start doing this with you? >> absolutely. at the event, everyone will get a crystal-clear picture of the real-estate market recovery we're experiencing right now and all the opportunities it presents. >> values are on the rise, and the market's getting very active again. there are literally millions of dollars in potential profits out there just waiting for those who want to learn how to go out and get it. >> that's right. the average financial gain for a flip recently has been over $45,000. imagine what flipping just one property right now could do for you and your family. >> and with the preapproved funding we're making available to our students through our money partners, everyone watching right now has an opportunity to use real estate to create profits from basically nothing. none of their own cash or credit is needed, so anyone really can do this. >> and it doesn't require any previous real-estate experience or real-estate license or anything like that? >> no, not at all. >> jim, did you have any prior real-estate investment experience before you attended the free event?
