latest tunnel trouble. good afternoon, thank you for being here, i'm kathryn hauser. inspectors were built the bolts holding the tunnel lights are cracking. now they are working on replacing them. nicole jacobs is live in boston with more on what steps are being taken. good afternoon, nicole. >> reporter: good afternoon. we are outside of the ted williams tunnel where hundreds of faulty construction nuts are expected to be replaced, even in the midst of these repairs, though, d.o.t. officials maintain all big dig tunnels are safe. the hustle and bustle in boston is nothing new, and some would say big dig issues aren't either. >> i know it was a pain in the early 2000 but since then, walking around the city from 9:00 to 5:00 has been excellent. >> another concern has massachusetts department of transportation officials -- for preventative measures, hundreds

of construction nuts are set to be replaced. >> they are aware of the problem and hopefully they will fix it and it will take a little bit of time. >> reporter: this comes after a mid september inspection revealed one single crack in a light fixture nut that prompted a complete once over through the nuts tunnel. >> they've got to check it out, i would think. sure it's not a reoccurring problem. >> reporter: these red tags in the ted williams tunnel march the fixture nuts to be replaced . in this tunnel alone, 878 nuts are in that boat. interstate 90 and 93 tunnels, they've counted 50. preventative measures then have aftereffects. >> reporter: massdot officials say the tunnels are safe and repairs. about the effort. there's always areas that need

house committee before facing tough questions about the deadly attack that a u.s. compound in benghazi. >> why were there so many requests for more security personnel and equipment and why were those tonight in washington? >> reporter: in her opening statement, clinton said she was appearing in honor of the four americans who died in 2012. >> i'm here to honor those we lost and to do what i can to aid those who serve us still. >> reporter: this is the third time clinton has testified on capitol hill about the attacks. once again she accepted responsibility for security lapses in benghazi. >> before i left office, i launched reforms to better protect our people in the field. and help reduce the chance of another tragedy happening in the future. >> reporter: democrats and even of you republicans have argued this hearing is nothing but a bipartisan effort to derail clinton's residential campaign. clinton is the democratic front runner for president.

natick and medfield. those few showers moving to the east toward milton and south shore. not really holding together too much. that's it. that's all we have. partly sunny skies in your hour by hour forecast for the rest of today. a couple of sprinkles not out of the question but the main event not until later this evening, even through 7:00 p.m., we keep it right for you guys an additional showers will develop on the cape and islands. i will go to the timing in just a bit. highs today before we get to the rain chances in the upper 60s and lower 70s. fantastic weather, get outside and enjoy it because cooler air in the forecast for tomorrow. we get drier as well. we will check out the weekend and take a look at the seven- day in just a bit. >> roller coaster of temperatures. thank you. a 16-year-old is under arrest after he said he planned to shoot up his high school. the teen had been boasting about it online, about previous school shootings. a friend is someone who took action. susie steimle reports.

>> reporter: a scare for students and parents at methuen high school, a 16-year-old threatened to murder his classmates. a friend turned him in. >> this was something critical that she actually thought it was serious enough to report that could happen. >> reporter: they are encouraging more students to come forward if they hear threats of violence. >> we would rather investigate 100 false complaints then mr. one real complaints. >> reporter: on monday, a student reported to police that her friend might do something violent and harm himself. officers then searched the two homes the boy stays out and found ammunition, tactical gear and fake guns, but no actual weapons. they arrested the boy monday night. >> we don't believe at any point there was an imminent danger to somebody at the school. this girl possibly save the child's life. >> reporter: parents say it's a wake-up call for them to check in with their own kids. >> always know where you are

>> reporter: the student is health evaluation and is due in methuen, susie steimle, wbz news. also developing this noon, a student and teacher are dead after an attack at a school in sweden. authorities say a mask 21-year- old man armed with a knife knocked on two classroom doors doors. a second student and teacher were badly injured. the man was later shot and killed by police. police now say the rape report at bridgewater state university was unfounded. an 18-year-old freshman had told police she was sexually assaulted while walking on campus monday night. she said she met the person on a social networking app. police released a sketch of the suspect but it ended up all being untrue. university police say the student will be charged. new at noon, two brookline firefighters have been fired by the board of selectmen after an arrest while off duty. the decision was made at last night selectmen meeting. firefighter joseph ward was arrested earlier this month

after a fight at a local restaurant. he's facing assault charges in the case. jeremy joseph was also fired, he was arrested a week ago for driving drunk. in a statement, the board of selectmen called the actions by the many egregious. service is back up and running after a woman fell onto the tracks last night. she was pinned under a train at the haymarket t station. the mbta tells us the woman was conscious and alert. she was taken to the hospital, so far no word on her condition. two years ago today, a danvers high school math teacher, colleen ritzer, was killed. now her friends and family are hoping you can honor her memory with an act of kindness. jennifer berger has been friends with ritzer since kindergarten. she's calling for random acts of kindness all day. she says it will help those who were close to her to get through a tough day. >> if we can give a little bit of good out of a bad day, the world is a little bit better place. >> berger is asking people to

if you plan on hitting the pike today, make sure you slow down. police are watching. they are stepping up speed patrols in an effort to get drivers to slow down at the tolls. if the campaign between state police and massdot to honor a worker killed over the summer in auburn. wbz was there as police pulled over dozens of drivers to give them a warning at the tolls toll by the airport. >> the danger is to the collectors who are walking between them at certain times. also, people try to change lanes as they are coming into the toll plaza. somebody stops, trying to grab a ticket, there's collisions that happen that way. >> just a reminder, the speed limit or any toll is 15 miles an hour. there are signs everywhere. still, stay police tell us most people go twice that fast which is what they are trying to change. on the health watch this noon, knee replacement surgery may not be the best solution for patients suffering arthritis. a study in the new england journal of medicine finds kneee replacement leads to pain relief but involves more risk.

gorgeous temperatures in your forecast today but we have a couple of raindrops. as we take a live look at the city, the prudential building and a couple of drops on the camera, spring goes moving through downtown boston. we had a weather watcher report that. overcast skies in some spots but breaks of sun in others. it depends on where you live. any rain that you have we need it. we are still under a drought. drought monitor actually updated earlier today and many locations under moderate drought to abnormally dry conditions, abnormally dry in the yellow including downtown boston. 7.4 inches of rain the low normal from where we should be since january 1. here's live look at doppler radar, only a brief isolated shower trying to develop to the south and west of downtown boston with a few sprinkles in the metro area here, but those cubital sprinkles are moving across the 128 belt, all the way across 93 and toward the south shore. that's about it. for now here in new england with some other showers bring off the coast of maine.

not much else moving our way. we do keep a chance for rain in especially on the cape and islands for late this evening as an area of energy passes over you guys. hour by hour forecast through 6:00 p.m., mostly dry, other than a few sprinkles, strong wind, but then the rain starts to ramp up a little bit. heavy downpours on the outer cape to the islands here through 10:00 p.m. maybe a rumble of thunder, nothing severe expected. all of this moves out. later tonight into friday morning, drier air on the way. sustained winds, getting a little strong between five and 15 miles per hour from the south but gusts later today could push the 30 mile per hour mark. over 99, the wind direction changes, instead of the south southwest, moving in from the northwest meeting we will have drier and cooler air in place tomorrow. temperatures in the 60s or 70s, 70 taunton, 67 right now in boston. hour by hour, we jump up to 70
