just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. we begin with breaking news. police are investigating a hit and run in saugus. >> we're told the driver after mercedes took off from the scene. nicole is live. what are the clues the dpriefer -- the driver left behind? >> reporter: we're here along route 1 where the scene has long cleared but it happened around 10:00, in the 10:00 hour last night. a significant crash happened here. i want to get you to some video. the details are few and far between. according to state police, a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle that did not stop. we're told the victim was transported from the scene with life threatening injury, unconscious and not breathing. authorities believe they are looking for a red mercedes-benz that will have damage. again, they say some parts of

i did speak with someone at the state police barracks a short time ago. they have not located that vehicle. they're still looking for it and they have not been able to give an update on that victim's condition, but anyone with information on this crash is urged to contact police. >> nicole, thank you. we follow a developing story in canada as well. a whale watching boat sinks killing five people. it happened off vancouver island in british columbia. 27 people were on the boat and 21 were rescued. one person is still missing. crews spent the night searching the water. 4:33. investigators are trying to figure out what caused this home to explode in hawnton. the home on -- taunton. the home on christine lane was almost instantly engulfed in flames. it might have been a gas

a woman who arrivals there escaped -- who lives there escaped just in time. she lives on the upper floor but got out in time. >> they saw the owner frantically running down the street screaming for help. assisted her. the house went up in flames in minutes. within 40 minutes the roof caiived in. >> crews say -- caved in. >> crews say it's a miracle nobody got hurt. they checked the line and the rest of the street to make sure it's safe. a mother will be in court today to defend herself against accusations she ignored doctor's orders to put other son in danger. she triggered an amber alert whether she drove her son to boston's children's hospital but has no regrets. >> everything in me told me, steph any, go -- tiffany, go. get your baby to boston

>> against medical advice she didn't take her 2-month-old center. >> i wasn't comfortable with the standard of care my child >> reporter: instead she drove four and a half hours away to a hospital she trusted. >> he was found at boston children's hospital to have issues with his esophagus and low blood so the severe dehydration came from a nurse practitioner who looked at my son for ten seconds and didn't the have a clue what he had. longer has custody. to boston. now out on bond, she insists an amber alert was unwarranted. >> the pennsylvania authorities jumped the gun. >> reporter: she says she's protective of her kid because her first child was stillborn in 2009. now she wants her two living children back in her arms.

>> it hurts. it hurts. >> reporter: today's hearing is a chance for her to regain custody of her children. she still faces two charges of child endangerment in pennsylvania. three men are due in court accused of making meth inside a burlington hotel. the three men were arrested friday night at the son nest take suites after a tip from hotel employees there. one of the suspects was seen wearing an ankle bracelet and acting suspiciously. they found a large apartment of meth inside the hotel room and plastic bags were covering the smoke detectors. massachusetts leaders will take part in a panel of opioid addiction tonight. the panel will be held at the edward m. kennedy institute moderated by wbz political analyst jon keller. the discussion will focus on efforts to fight the state's growing oip joyed over-- opiod overdose problems.

inside a shop were rushed to hospital after a woman drove through. >> she was obviously stunned, not aware of what just happened. she had to be extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital and the employee as well was quite stunned. he's working one minute and being struck the next. >> police say the store wasn't very busy at the time. boat the driver and the employee are expected to be okay. the patriots jetting right back to work this morning. up next for them, the miami dolphins on thursday night football. give the pats a little time to celebrate sunday's win over the jets. all the action happened right here on wbz. down 20-16 in the 4th quarter. brady there on the crucial 3rd and 6th. put the pats up 23-20. pats would get the ball back. brady reading the blitz finding. the pats are now 6-0 to start

it wasn't so bad yesterday morning. we had the showers, danielle. then a little chillier. >> the skies cleared out so we've been able to cool off. at least the weather is quiet to start our week. today and tomorrow, although tomorrow some high thin wispy clouds will be on the increase. we have an area of low pressure. actually some of the remnants of what was hurricane patricia. this is going to move in on wednesday. so the clouds thicken up. rain arrives and lasts to early thursday and tapers off to showers. looks like the steadiest rain is wednesday evening and night. trick or treaters. we're talking about temperatures in the 40s. looks like a blend of sun and clouds, clearing skies as we head through the overnight hours on saturday as well. 38 nashua. 30 in keene. depends on where you are. temperatures a little on the cool side. skies are clear as you're stepping out early this morning. you zoom the view out and the clouds do increase through the mid-atlantic and then you run into some rain.

flash flooding risk continues across the gulf coast states all the way from the florida panhandle back up to mississippi today. this area of low pressure is the rep nantz moisture from pa -- remnant moisture from patricia. it will work up along this front and impact us by the middle part of the week. for now high pressure is building in. that means quiet weather today, mostly sunny skies. another nice day tomorrow although some of the wispy clouds will be on the increase. you'll notice them a bit. wednesday morning will be dry but notice this. the rain advancing in during the afternoon on wednesday. we'll fall steadily and at times heavily wednesday evening and night and eventually push out of here early on thursday. it will be mild, too. temperatures will come up around 70 by thursday afternoon. highs today, though, a little cooler than average.

says he feels like he made the right call. >> any parent listening who's lost a child knows that you can't -- it doesn't follow schedules and primaries and caucuses and contributors and the like. it just -- and everybody grieves at a different pace. >> vice president biden also told 60 minutes he will never run for political office again. halloween came early for a boy in new hampshire who was going to miss trick or treating because of medical treatments. he had a brain tomb are removed earlier this year. he needs to undergo chemotherapy tomorrow so his neighborhood decided to move halloween up so he could get some trick or treating in first. you might see some unusual looking pumpkins trick or treating this weekend. some families will be putting out teal colored pumpkins to show they'll be offering non- candied treats. this way kids with food allergies can take part in the

4:52. our top stories police are searching for a hit-and-run driver in saugus. the victim was hit around 10:00 on route 1 southbound. the person was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. investigators are searching for a red mercedes that should have damage to it. parts of that car were left at the scene. also a developing story in canada. a whale watching boat sinks killing five people. this morning one person is still missing. the boat sank off vancouver island in british, columbia.

27 people were on board when call. a dispatcher accused of killing her uncle is expected in court. 36-year-old yvonne lewis was arrested in peabody hours after clyde francis was shot in the saturday night. a motive for the murder is still a mystery. >> it's total shock. he was very playful. he was loving. he was tender, kind, true. >> lewis worked for boston police for nine years as a communications equipment 2012. a dorchester man is due in court today charged in an armed assault in the fenway neighborhood. boston police say a woman was attacked and thrown to the ground near park drive early yesterday morning as the suspect attempted to steal her purse. when the victim fought back, police say the attacker slashed her with a knife. police arrested the suspect, 53-

the woman is expected to be okay. a instruct -- structural engineers are trying to decide if this commercial building in medford needs to be torn down after a roof partially collapsed there. a large section of that roof caved in with debris falling inside. it once housed a dry cleaner but is now vie cants. more people in boston -- vacant. more people in boston are getting to work on bikes. the u.s. census bureau shows the number of bike commuters have tripled in the past decade. an estimated 8100 people peddled themselves to work last year. mass general hospital says medication mistakes during surgeries are surprisingly high. the globe reports researchers in the anesthesiology department observed surgeries and found errors were much higher than previously reported. one of almost 300 surgeries -- three of the mistakes were considered life threatening. women in labor have long been told to avoid eating because new study says food
