we have 30s on the map. 33 in portsmouth, new hampshire. 39 in worcester. 50 when you come back down to chatham and nantucket. clouds have been moving in, but they are thin enough that we'll get sunshine at least filtered through. rain is coming back through central new york and northern new jersey. that rain arrives mid to late afternoon for most of us. the morning commute is fine. 2:30, 3:00, worcester down through providence advancing through boston around 4:00. it will be around the evening commute. it only ramps up from there. heavy rain, tropical downpours. even embedded thunderstorms into tonight and early tomorrow morning. ships out of here towards the tail end of the morning commute tomorrow. so enjoy the quiet weather

we'll talk more about the coastal concerns. weather and traffic on the roads. >> 290 eastbound just before shrewsbury street is exit 15. total traffic network says it is a truck versus car. we're starting to see backups now. to the south, the expressway jammed from neponset circle to columbia road, still a strug federal route 37 to the split. finally to the north, 93 southbound is two slow pockets between river road and dascomb road and then in the woburn stretch. route 3 southbound looks heavy and slow between 495 and 129. chris, kathryn. we begin with breaking news. a raging fire tears through a building in lynn. >> dozens of people forced out into the cold overnight. nicole jacobs is live on the scene. good morning, nicole. >> good morning to you, chris. good morning, kathryn. certainly a scary situation for residents hear to describe panic. even some of their neighbors

wanting to jump out of the windows to safety. let's take a look here at the second and third floors of this building. these are actually the apartments of the building. the first floor being several restaurants along this stretch. let's take a look at some video from overnight. this fire did reach three alarms at the peak of it. heavy flames were shooting from the rear of the second floor. again, as i mentioned, those are apartment buildings on that second and third floor. the first goal for crews, of course, was to make sure everybody got out of this building. here's the fire chief describing the challenge of that. >> everybody screaming out of the building. we took a couple of people out on the ladders on the union street side. we got lines in place in the building for 10 or 15 minutes. we had to get everybody out because of the bad conditions. >> reporter: the conditions, we're told, got very bad very quickly. taking another live look here

you the american red cross is assisting dozens of residents right now. we're told 24 adults, seven children that they are helping out. an mbta bus was on scene overnight giving the residents a shelter as it is a much chillier night than it has been in the past. the fire is under investigation. coming up at 6:30, you'll hear from one of the residents who lives here. nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. >> thank you very much. boston police searching for this man. take a good look. he's wanted in connection to a murder in brighton last week. 25-year-old gomatta mousa should be considered armed and dangerous. desmond joseph was shot and killed last week. if you see musses you are asked to call police -- if you see mousa, you are asked to call police right away. a 5-year-old hit by a car after getting off the school

the job. susie, this never should have happened? >> reporter: exactly. that's because it's against school policy to leave a child without a parent or guardian to pick them up. because the drive der that, the driver is off the job. it's lucky that a couple of little boy. >> i released his backpack from his neck so he could breathe. >> reporter: ron was one of a few good samaritans who kept a 5-year-old alert after he got off the school bus alone only to be hit by a car minutes later. >> he had an egg on his head the size of like a half a baseball. he was bleeding from the mouth. >> as far as i'm concerned, no little kid should ever be getting off the bus without someone there to get them, especially on a street like this. >> reporter: officials from the charter school agree and don't

young boy off at his stop without a parent or guardian present. the driver has been suspended without pay. the boy suffered a broken leg and minor head injury. is he expected to fully recover. >> i'm glad he's okay. pick up your kids. make sure that somebody's there, please. >> reporter: as for the driver of the car who hit the boy, they did stop and fully comply police. because of that, they are not facing any charges at this time. susie steimle, wbz this morning. the department of transportation will investigate a part of route 20 in oxford where a mother and her infant son died. investigators are recreating the accident scene. 31-year-old christina rusen died her car swerved over the center line and hit a concrete truck head on.

>> you can't assume she was on the phone or was distracted. it is a bad corner and accidents happen. >> reporter: lisa broder's husband died when his car crossed the center line 18 years ago. her son is paralyzed for life. she's been fighting to at least get jersey barriers placed there. stoneham police are searching for two robbers who hit up a coin shop. investigators say two employees were tased. a middleborough man accused of choking a 5-year-old is under arrest. solomon martinez is facing felony assault charges. police say he was visiting a 5- year-old relative in exeter, new hampshire when he placed his hands around her neck. he's now being held on $10,000 cash bail. so many people are reacting to the story in general.

department are investigating this video. it shows a violent arrest of its student inside of a south carolina high school. bree is now back with the newest developments. good morning, bree. >> reporter: good morning. deputy ben fields is on administrative leave right now. the sheriff says he's close to deciding whether or not to fire fields. deputy fields was asked to remove the student from class by the teacher and vice principal. school officials called the tactics outrageous and say they will reassess how the deputies are screened. the sheriff says fields' employment will depend on whether or not he followed the training he's been given while removing that student. the sheriff agrees the video is disturbing. >> i want to throw up. i mean, it just makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. again, that's a snapshot. as a professional, i have to look beyond just that one fist

video and look at the total picture. that's what we're doing. >> reporter: there are reports that the student punched fields before the video was recorded, but the sheriff says he is not concerned at all with the students' actions only his deputies. fields is suspended at the moment. the sheriff expects to complete the internal investigation today. so a federal probe could take several weeks. chris, back to you. campaign 2016 now. tonight is the third debate in the republican presidential race. the latest poll has ben carson with the four-point lead over donald trump. in iowa, trump called second place terrible. the top ten candidates will take part in tonight's debate in boulder, colorado. if you are heading to the celtics season opener at the garden tonight, you may want to get there early. new metal detectors have been installed. bruins fans are the fist ones to go through them last night.

what a start to the world series last night. the royals and mets facing off in game one, which lasted five hours 19 minutes. the mets up 4-3 and the royals crush that home run to tie it up. scoring the winning run there. royals win, 5-4. the longest game one in world series history. game two is tonight. earlier in the game, the fox broadcast team knocked them off the air. they switched to the mlb international feed for a couple of innings. the game was delayed because replay was unavailable. both managers agreed to continue on without replay. thanks to this stolen base by lorenzo cane, you can get a free breakfast sandwich. taco bell will give out free

high winds and high tide could spell trouble today at a notorious spot for flooding. halloween is just days away, and they had this sign posted called franken tide. >> i herveer heard of franken tide but it sounds spooky. >> yeah. >> serious coastal flooding possibilities. >> yeah, minor coastal flooding, so it's night major or anything like that. yeah, the typical spots like morrissey boulevard and right at the coastline. for a couple of high tide cycles.

the wind advisory is in effect for 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. notice all of eastern massachusetts for southeast wind gusts to 45 miles per hour. i wouldn't be surprised if we see some gusts that top out near 50. potentially 55 miles per hour and some of the heaviest downpours and thunderstorms that develop. so that would be strong enough to cause isolated pockets of damage in eastern massachusetts tonight into very early tomorrow morning. meantime, high temperatures 55 to 60 today. look at this, 72 tomorrow after rain in the morning and then clearing or at left sunshine breaking out after that. friday mostly sunny. temperatures cool back off in the 70s. no problems there for trick or treaters. and milder into the 60s to start next week. robi? >> reporter: we have a new crash and backups south of the city right now. the accident is in canton 95

court in salem saying he is hear racing him. doctor harassing him. he's accused of repeatedly calling her late at night, swearing at her and assaulting her on social media. swarza owns a store in salem and says his harassing has hurt her business. the two were once business partners. they will meet in district court later on today. an eerie discovery by the mbta. crews uncovered creepy costumes. a crew member had to jump back when he opened a hollow concrete post. inside were two ragged, beat up costumes. the red and blue capes are decorated with stars and freaky masks attached to them, too. they date back to the 1950s.

that situation. take a look here. this is where most of the damage is on one side. building with a lot of damage. the other side, you'll likely just have water damage and minor damage. this is where firefighters believe the fire started. let's look at some of the overnight flames. i can tell you that the chief says that the fire started around 11:00. they arrived and found the flames piercing through the windows. some of the residents say that they were actually considering jumping from the windows because they were so panicked and so frantic. we did speak with one woman who says several of her family members lived in multiple units. let's listen. >> oh, my god, let me just check this. so i went upstairs to see my apartment. as soon as i went to the kitchen, i smelled all of the smoke and ran down. i went to see him like let me see from my niece's room because you can see from the backyard. so i went to see.

known like a black box. so now it's using side scan sonar technology. they are expected to give an update on the search today. a horse rescue to tell about you in sherborn. the horse got stuck in a field of mud at the orchard last night. the animal was shaken up and stressed but was able to walk away. congress is expected to vote today on a budget compromise to prevent a government shutdown. outgoing speaker boehner is pushing republicans to approve that bipartisan deal. they would raise spending for defense and domestic programs through 2017. the agreement would also prevent cuts in social security and medicare. they have to pass both the house and senate. congress is also trying to pass a long-term transportation bill. p house yesterday passed a measure that would delay a mandate for railroads to incorporate new safety technology.

technology could prevent accidents liked deadly amtrak derailment this past may. they were given to the end of the year to implement the changes. a 5-year-old boy hit by a car while getting off the school bus is recovering this morning, but his bus driver has been suspended. susie steimle is live in worcester with the reason why. good morning, susie. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn. the abby telecharter school specifically has a policy in place to make sure that things like this don't happen. bus drivers must make sure that a parent or guardian is there to pick up every student at the bus stop so they are not left alone. because the student was left alone, that driver is now temporarily suspended with pay, pending this investigation. unfortunately, being left alone at the bus stop is not the worst thing to happen to this 5-year-old boy. after being left there he was then hit by a car on hamilton street. this happened on monday afternoon. he suffered a broken leg and minor head injury.

thankfully there were a couple of people nearby who saw this and stopped to help this boy. saw. >> we talked to him saying open your eyes, open your eyes. he opened his eyes and was trying to get up. we said stay where you are. don't move. >> he had an egg on his head like the size of a baseball and was bleeding from the mouth. >> reporter: as for the driver of the car who hit this young boy, they complied with the and talked to police. because of that, they are not facing any charges at this point in time. susie steimle, wbz this morning. massachusetts students are tops in the nation according to a new report card out this morning. on the whole, math and reading scores were down across the country. massachusetts ranks first in fourth and eighth grade math but finished behind new hampshire when it comes to eighth grade reading.

facing two new federal lawsuits both filed here in massachusetts. two men claim draftkings and fan duel violate fantasy law by claiming it requires skill and believes it is rigged to pay out top players. history may be on tom brady's side. he is a perfect 8-0 on thursday night football. the dolphins have racked up 82 points during the current two- game win streak. brady knows the pats' offense better be ready to score points come tomorrow night. >> they've got a lot of guys that can make plays. on our or fence, we have to counter that. we've got to play well early and have to play well and be aggressive. they're playing really well.

downpours around the farther east you go. we ship it out tomorrow morning. breaks of sun come out. we come into the lower 70s. then a late day shower briefly generally north and west of boston. pregame tailgating for thursday night football tomorrow. upper 60s. i wouldn't bring the poncho or anything like that. you may want the rain coat to pop the hood up. clearing skies coming in around kickoff. temperature around 60 falling into the 50s. the wind will be 10 to 20 miles tomorrow. speaking of wind, tomorrow, it's out of the east-southeast. so we get a coastal flood this afternoon. this evening, we may see gusts topping out around 40, 45 miles per hour. coastline, cape and islands especially may see gusts that exceed 50 miles per hour. overnight tonight and some of the heaviest downpours and thunderstorms that develop. tomorrow, that wind shifts around out of the southwest.
