5:00 pm
dolphins are more than ready to take the patriots' best punch. >> whatever they changed is really working. i think they are playing at an extremely high level. they've gotten off to big leads. >> they are doing a few things differently now. we know that this team always plays us hard, will always compete, and this is always going to be a challenging game for us regardless of who's coaching it, and who's playing it. so we have to do the best we can to prepare. >> reporter: it will be a challenge. let's go to cbs scene where dan roche is standing by. danny? >> reporter: we hear the patriots talk about their goals and it starts always with winning the division. a victory tonight would go a long way in helping their cause towards winning another afc east crown. each team has six games. the jets and bills each have
5:01 pm
one loss and the dolphins have already lost twice. so yes, a pats win would give a huge edge in trying to secure the seventh straight afc east crown. >> we tray to win 'em all -- we try to win 'em all. our division is tough. every time we play a division team, it's going to be a tough game, so this is no exception. >> oh, yeah, division games are huge. we got the dolphins now. they are playing good, so this is going to be a huge game. >> reporter: tom brady hasn't lost a divisional game at home since 2006, and even that was a meaningless game as he only played a quarter. think about it, 16 seasons, tom brady, including playoffs, 107- 17 here in foxboro. pretty good stuff indeed. from the cbs scene, where things are already perked up and folks are ready to go for hours, back to you on the field.
5:02 pm
it should be a great time at halftime. willie mcginest gets inducted into the patriots hall of fame. lisa, david, back to you. >> all right, steve. thank you. what is thursday night football without tailgating? >> it just wouldn't be the same. fans are amped up and ready to go. this weather is certainly a bonus. jim armstrong, we've checked in with you when it has been pouring and windy in that parking lot, but i mean this? what a night. >> reporter: i deserve it if i'll go so far to say. even the most optimistic pats fan never would have imagined right on the verge of november they'd end up tailgating in nearly 07 degree weather -- 70 degree weather. the temperatures are great exception. this weather is cooperative for pats fans. for the giant ice sculpture of gronkowski, not so much. do you seem relaxed and calm before the game? >> i am relaxed and calm.
5:03 pm
>> reporter: why? it's 6-0 and could be 7-0 or not. >> you take it one game at a time. the record doesn't mean anything. >> reporter: the autumn tailgate is in full on summertime mode. >> we worry at the sioux super bowl built rate now, we've done this before. >> reporter: you said the "s" word. >> this is a revenge tour. up at the cbs scene, there's a lot of optimism but people are less worried to talk about playoffs. is it too early to talk about that thing that happens in the wintertime? >> yeah. it's one game at a time. >> i'm loving it. with everything that's happened through the years, they are just proving shut up, let's play football. they are proving it. >> true faith in tom brady and the whole team. i think they've got their mind on the game. they know what needs to be done.
5:04 pm
>> reporter: it's a little after 5:00 now of course, but some of the earliest tailgaters hours. if it's okay with you, i will check on the gronk statue, at gronk puddle. >> we could not have asked for better weather. >> meteorologist eric fisher is live on the field for us tonight. how are you doing, eric? >> reporter: i'm doing great. it's not very often you can go out here on the field here in foxboro and not even have to pleasant. i did enjoy a little bit in a good friend kind of way. we are starting to cool off after the mid-07s earlier on this afternoon. now we've had that cold front region. we're down to 70 in boston, still great. you notice in the 50s across southwestern vermont into the snow areas. the cooler air is filtering its way in.
5:05 pm
winds have been gusty basically 25 to 35 miles per hour. a little bit of an imfact with a cross wind on the field. it will be equal benefit and hindrance to both teams. so at kickoff, close to 60 degrees and falling back through the 50s, it will be breezy, cool, and dry with no complaints this time of the season. heading into the day tomorrow, a seasonal day as we kick off the weekend. heading into the weekend itself, a cup. changes for us. of course we have halloween and after the 50s on friday, we're looking at a bit cooler air coming in for saturday. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up in a little while. david, lisa, back to you in the studio. >> thank you. our team coverage continues. coming up, a closer look at the miami dolphins, a team coming into tonight's game with real momentum. our pats coverage starts tonight at 7:00 about a special edition game day kickoff 8:25. we'll break down the game at
5:06 pm
fifth quarter my 28 and join us right here for wbz news at 11:00. as for breaking news tonight in lowell where a middle school evacuated after dozens of students said that they felt sick. we want to get rate to liam mart -- right to liam martin. this started about noontime or so. >> this was at 11:30 at the sullivan school. 60 kids had to be checked for what seemed like carbon monoxide. it was likely caused by a virus instead. at this point, five kids were experiencing nausea and vomiting and had to be brought to the hospital for evaluation. they are expected to be okay. all 600 kids at that school were sent home as a precaution, and the school will be thoroughly disinfected tonight. schools are going throughout the entire school testing it to see what virus is in there. they will make a decision tonight on whether or not there will be school tomorrow. we'll keep you posted on that. david? breaking here at 5:00, moments ago, the sentence came down for owen la brie, the new
5:07 pm
who sexually assaulted an underaged classmate. christina hager was live as it was read. what happened? >> reporter: he blessed himself with one year in the prison followed by probation, according to the judge. these are for five charges, including having sex with a minor and using the internet to lure a minor into having sex. he was originally charged with rape, but a jury acquitted him of those charges back in august. this stems from the tradition at the elite st. paul prep school in conquer, new hampshire -- concorde, new hampshire, where both were students. the tradition is called the senior salute where it targets underclassmen for sex before graduation. la brie heard a tearful victim impact statement, his accuser appearing on video. she wasn't in court saying
5:08 pm
fellow students continue to taunt her at st. paul's and that she has had suicidal thoughts. then la pre's defense attorney talked about how la brie will have to register as a sex offender and how that will affect his life and haunt him and limit his options for the rest of his life. so la brie now, according to is in a car with his mother. he is allowed to stay out on bail as he has throughout this trial until his appeals are exhausted. his attorneys have already told the judge they are appealing. so if this sentence -- it's also worth noting that if this sentence were to stand after those appeals, he could also get out before his one-year sentence is through based on good behavior. so this is all very much up in the air. we have attorneys outside here
5:09 pm
hopefully coming up at 6:00. for now, we're live in concord. christina hager, back to you. developing right now, terrifying moments on the tarmac. a plane full of passengers caught fire in florida. louisa? >> reporter: you can only imagine the fear those passengers must have felt when on. i want you to take a look at some of these images. we're looking at huge plumes of black smoke in the air. the dynamic airways boeing 767 caught fire earlier today as it prepared to take off from fort lauderdale hollywood international airport to venezuela. passengers had to use emergency slides and several people were injured taken to area hospitals. thanknyfully, only one person was seriously -- thankfully only one person was seriously burned.
5:10 pm
saw fuel leaking before they took off. >> regarding the burn victim, we just know that one person, we don't know if it's a crew member or passenger, sustained serious burns, serious injuries. that was the most serious of all of the 15 that were transported by broward sheriff fire rescue and other agencies. there were two that were less seriously injured, and the remaining 12 sustained minor injuries. >> reporter: the airport remained operational through much of the ordeal. the national transportation safety board is not determining yet whether it will launch an investigation. david, back to you. >> thank you. he got on a plane at logan bound for chicago but touched down in a boston courtroom today. an uxbridge man says he was only joking when he said had he a bomb in his bag -- he had a bomb in his bag, but no one on the plane laughed. he instead can't go to logan nor can he fly on any airline

. china's one-child policy will soon become part of the past. the decades old rule was implemented to prevent skyrocketing growth. >> if chinese lawmakers clear the change, future generations could grow up with is inlings. >> -- with siblings. >> the one-child policy was implemented in 1980 to slow china's population growth. it was 969 million that year and more than 1.3 billion today. there were always exceptions. families in rural areas could have more children because they needed children as workers on their farms. in 1984, the chinese made a quiet change saying that if a husband and wife are both from a one-child family, they can have two children because that just replaces, not increases
5:14 pm
the population. today's move makes that stance official. it's not been a popular policy in china where untold millions had forced abortions for getting preying pregnant with a second child. the controversial policy is officially ended because it's done the job. china's long-term population growth has been stemmed. barry peterson, cbs news, london. >> huge, huge story there. barry, thank you so much. from morning downpours to the spring-like temperatures, we've seen a bit of everything today. bringing down big ole industries like this one in milton. you can see it coming down and crushing that car. >> it is dangerous out there for a moment. >> eric is on the field at gillette. i wish we were there. >> i wish we were, too. eric is there holding down the fort and he's out on the field running around when we don't go
