maintenance worker and sneaking into a cohasset school will be in court this morning. police say he stole from teachers. there are serious security questions because the school let him in. >> reporter: anthony may have been wearing a t-shirt and shorts when he was booked thursday, but it's what he wore several times over the past months that led him to cohasset police in the first place. >> he's held onto one of his uniforms, it appears, and he's entering the school using a ruse that he's here to fix the hvac system. >> reporter: he used to work for a company that services the schools in town. but he was fired last month. the only problem? no one informed the school department. >> we know it is a wake-up call. >> reporter: on several occasions, they allowed the man inside the elementary during

the school day where he allegedly stole from staff. >> we had a number of teachers who had money taken from their hand bags. >> reporter: students were nerver in any danger, they say. >> it brought to our attention we need to review protocols and maybe increase them. >> reporter: he's due before a judge in quincy on friday. in cohasset, julie loncich, wbz this morning. new this morning, a serious head-on crash. two cars collided overnight. we're told two people were injured but the injuries were nonlife-threatening. also overnight, another serious crash to tell you about on jamaica way. two cars collided and two people were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. a rhode island man is due in court charged with brutally beating an elderly couple who had run out of gas. police say the man attacked the couple with a metal baseball bat in providence wednesday night. it's unclear what led to the attack. the victims are both in their 70s.

the husband is now in critical condition. his wife is in serious condition. a level 3 sex offender has been charged in an andover home invasion. peter who is homeless is accused of breaking into a home, duct taping a 16-year-old girl to a chair and stealing cash. he allegedly left fingerprints behind at the second home, and that's how investigators tracked him down. the new hampshire prep school graduate convicted of sexual assault will remain free while attorneys appeal his conviction and sentence. yesterday, a judge sentenced owen la brie to one year in jail and five years' probation. he with ill also have to register as -- he will also have to register as a sex offender for life. he was found guilty of sexually offending a 15-year-old girl when he was 18. she recorded an impact

here on wall street, investors are waiting for the commerce department to release new numbers for consumer spending for september. americans have been saving money on relatively cheap gas prices but so far hasn't translated into more shopping. consumer spending makes up 70% of economic activity. volvo is jumping on a new safety feature for drivers in australia. kangaroo detection. there are more than 20,000 car car/kangaroo accidents every year. and a huge boost of sales to starbucks. for the christmas season, starbucks will be rolling out ugly sweater cookies and a holiday spice flat white. >> cookies, sweetsp. >> all you guys heard was cookies, right? >> right.

degrees. wasn't it beautiful? 70 in worcester. 72 in keene. we had 70s across the board and on the cape. we under the 40s now from worcester to nashua. 48 in keene. it's 53 in boston right now. lower 50s from taunton to lawrence at 50. the skies are clear, and we are in for a lot of sunshine today. there are a couple of showers along the canadian border. we don't have to worry about those. there's a piece of energy that needs to swing through today. we may get a couple of clouds to mix in with the sunshine, and that is about it. high pressure will build in as we head into the overnight tonight and tomorrow. enjoy the cool, fall weather that's returning today. the wind from the northwest won't be as strong as it is yesterday. a little active this morning about 8 to 18 miles per hour. starting with sunshine in clouds. they are the high, thin, serous clouds. they will probably be a pretty sunset and no weather-related

issues for trick or treaters. by sunday, there's a warm front to our north and west. the leading edge will come back and with the mild air trying to push in, we get a lot of clouds on sunday. there's a low risk of a brief, passing shower. i think it would be isolated. most of us would be dry on saturday. we get a partial sunshine with the southwest breeze boosting temperatures to around 60 degrees on sunday. today, middle to upper 50s will do it for most of us, to degrees cooler than yesterday. high temperatures tomorrow, a touch cooler. you'll notice most of us running about 50 to 55 degrees. trick or treaters heading out, it will be cooling off but not all that bad. some thin clouds around, quiet. we head into 9:00 p.m. tomorrow night and highs by sunday top out right around 60 degrees. so back to a little above average. what about this for the fist week of november? a warming trend, middle to upper 60s.

some 70s for the middle part of the week. a dry stretch as well, and it will be cooler at the coastline, chris, in the upper 50s through the middle part of the week. >> looks good, danielle. thank you very much. new video has been released of a deadly shoot-out between rival gangs at a texas restaurant last spring. nine people were killed at the twin peaks restaurant in waco. dozens were injured. surveillance from inside shows the chaos after the fist shots were fired and shows several bikers carrying guns. each of the gangs claims the other was the first to fire. police recovered 480 weapons from the scene, including 151 guns. >> wow, shocking video there. an investigation is under way after a plane caught fire. paula ebben has a closer look at what happened.

>> engine's on fire! engine's on fire! >> reporter: the plane burst into flames as it was taxiing for takeoff thursday afternoon. andres says the 30 seconds it took for the flight attendant to open the door and dispatch the emergency slide felt like a long time. >> it was pretty nerve-racking to know that the door wasn't opening and knowing something was on fire. >> reporter: airport fire crews responded in about two minutes. all 110 people on board the plane quickly evacuated. 20 people were taken to area hospitals for various injuries. inside the airplane. i think that helped us a lot. >> reporter: the airport hazmat team found a fuel leak in the wing. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the airport reopened after being shut down for about three hours causing dozens of cancellations and delays.

welcome back at 4:52 right now. morning. the new england patriots are a perfect 7-0 this season following last night's win on thursday night football, which was right here on wbz. gronk and company beating the afc east rivals, the miami dolphins 36-7. there it is with the spike, gronk throwing it down. tom brady throwing two touchdowns, two to julian edleman. up next, the washington sundayp a lowell middle school where dozens of students got sick will reopen this morning. crews spent the night scrubbing down and testing the sullivan middle school. the building was evacuated yesterday morning. five students went to the hospital at first. officials thought it was a carbon monoxide leak but now they think it was a virus. a mysterious sound that prompted an evacuation at a school after a loud bang.

it sounded like it was coming from underground. that's when the building shook. there's no word on what caused the noise. the school will be back open this morning. 4:53 right now. this morning, boston's cardinal sean o'malley is responding to the movie "spotlight" dealing with the boston clergy sex abuse crisis. in a statement, cardinal o'malley says the movie depicts a painful time in the church's history. he says the church is still seeking forgiveness from those harmed and says he is seeking a zero tolerance when it comes to pedophile priestsp. >> vice president joe biden will meet with bernie sanders. the meeting took place at the naval observatory in washington yesterday. that's where the vice president lives. the two men talked for about an hour. the sanders campaign says they discussed campaign finance reform and public education. meanwhile, jeb bush is denying that his presidential campaign is on life support.

the former florida governor spoke at a town hall in new london, new hampshire yesterday. bush advisors say his poll numbers have to increase and he has to stop being overshadowed by competitors. wynn resorts is changing the plans in everett. in a hearing, one official says they would be eliminating a nightclub. they would replace it with expanded convention facilities and a smaller high-end lounge. 800 parking spots. also yesterday, the city of somerville filed a legal change on environmental grounds. the spirit of martin richard will be in new york this weekend. 22 runners will be running in his name at the new york city marathon. team mr8 is named after those killed in the boston marathon bombings.
