it's halloween eve, october 30th. danielle is in her orange all decked out. looking good, danielle. >> i didn't plan that. yes, i did. >> fair enough. >> i should have had pumpkin earrings or something like that. hey, you guys, temperatures are cooler than yesterday. 52 in boston. the drier air has moved in. the winds from the west at 14 miles per hour right now. 52 in boston but 40s in a lot of the suburbs. not too bad given the time of the year, right? skies are clear as well. a couple of clouds to our north and west will build in this afternoon, but we'll stay dry. just a few scattered clouds here. grab the shades. couple of clouds, 54 by lunchtime. the northwest breeze not nearly as jong as that wind yesterday, about 8 to 18 miles per hour. clear and quiet, 51 for the ride home. we'll take you through the weekend in detail but want to get you on the roads.

they made it look easy 36-7 bringing the pats' record to 7- 0. now they are feeling a little bit of pressure to remain perfect. a pumped up patriots nation this morning as the pats defeat an afc east foe for the second time in five days. coach belichick crediting his week. >> it's a tough week mentally, themselves. time to prepare. it's definitely a quick turn around, but we did a great job as a team. >> reporter: once again, it was tom brady leading the way, throwing three touchdowns, two going to julian edle mapp. >> incredible player, teammate. >> reporter: before the game, fans were out in full force. the mild weather perfect for tailgating, putting everyone in a good mood. fans and player as like cost but cautious. >> you take it one game at a time. the record right now doesn't mean anything.

lowell school after students get sick and some even have to go to the hospital. >> sullivan middle school will be reopened this morning. nicole jacobs is there now with a closer look at what officials think sparked all of this. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, kathryn. certainly when a group of students gets sick, it is cause for concern. school officials here at sullivan middle school took the utmost precaution but in the end, it appears to have just been a virus that spread amongst a few students here at the school. out of 600 students, we're told 60 of them saw the school nurse and ultimately went home for the day. school officials called 911 around 11:30 yesterday morning and had five students transported to the hospital by ambulance. all other students and staff were evacuated from the school. overnight, professional crews cleared and cleaned this school from top to bottom.

assure the safety of the situation. again, in the end, all of it checked out well. school is back in session this morning. for now, we're live in lowell, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. >> thank you very much. cruise are investigating a mysterious sound that prompted an evacuation at a lexington elementary school. it was a loud bang. a lot of people described it just after 9:00 yesterday morning. children and staff attester brook elementary heard it and thought it sounded like it was coming from underground. then it shook the building. firefighters were called in. there's no word on what caused the noise. a cohasset school is learning a hard lesson after a man snuck in and stole from the teachers.

anthony binsfeld got in by wearing a uniform as a rye pair mapp even hope had he been fired from his job. items started disappearingp. >> we have a number of teachers who had money taken from their handbag. it brought to our attention that we need to review our protocols regularly and even increase them. >> he'll be in court today both police and school officials say students were never in danger. 5:07 right now. a rhode island man is due in court this morning charged with brutally beating an elderly couple whose car ran out of gas. police say the man attacked the couple with a metal baseball bat in providence wednesday night. it's unclear what led up to the attack. the victims are both in their 70s. the husband is in critical condition and his wife is in serious condition. a level 3 sex offender will be charged today in a home invasion in andover. he is a homeless man who is accused of breaking into a

home, duct taping a 16-year-old girl to a chair and stealing cash. it's one of three homes he broke into and allegedly left fingerprints behind in the second home and that's how investigators were able to track him down. the prep school graduate convicted of sexual assault has been sentenced to one year in jail and five years probation. owen la brie will also have to register for life as a sex offender. the jury found la brie guilty of sexually assaulting a 15- year-old girl while he was 18. the girl recorded an impact statement that was played in court yesterday. >> what you did to me made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet and that i would be better off dead than having to deal with the terrible things

>> owen la brie always claimed the sex was consensual. he could have received as much as 11 years in prison. there is new support for regulating daily sports fantasy web sites here in massachusetts. state gambling regulators say they are working on guidelines to help lawmakers as they consider regulating sites like boston-based draftkings and fan duel. the gaming commission would need authority to regulate the popular web sites. coming up, honoring the late tom menino. >> his death and how his legacy lives on. >> and wynn resorts changing their plans for the hotel and casino in everett and what they want to eliminate from the project. >> so we saw color around new england to be seen here in terms of foliage. there's a lot of past peak color. southeastern massachusetts still has brighter colors, but a lot of the leaves did come down with the storms yesterday. we'll have your trick or treat forecast when we come back.

clouds will make for a nice sunset. no issues for trick or treaters, either. temperatures will be cooling through the 40s. a warm front will approach on sunday leaving mild air that will come back into the mix for a lot of next week. so we start with clouds on sunday morning. i can't rule out an isolated shower on sunday, especially during the first part of the day. i think most of us, the majority of us will be dry no problem. is some sunshine may peek out as well. sunshine boosts temperatures to around 60. a touch cooler here. worcester hills, southwest new hampshire about 49 in jaffrey. tomorrow, a couple of degrees cooler than today. 54 in boston. most of us lower to middle 50s. what about the spooky halloween forecast? temperatures from around 50 degrees at 5:00 p.m. will be cooling into the mid- 40s by 7:00 p.m., quiet and cool. high temperatures on sunday up around 60 degrees.

don't forget, by the way, sunday 2:00 a.m. so saturday night, we turn the clocks back to daylight saving time coming to an end. temperatures 60 on sunday. look at this. first week in november, right? middle to upper 60s, warming trend, no wet weather monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. wouldn't be surprised if some communities come into the 70s for the middle part of the week. the temperatures will be in the 50s there. traffic and weather together, robi. >> we're breathing a sigh of relief that it's not like >> a dozen-plus accidents. >> reporter: by the end of the morning commute, there were probably close to 20 accidents. >> add wind and rain. >> poor visibility and hydroplaning and whatnot, but smooth sailing. friday morning commute is under way. take it easy driving through the neighborhood tomorrow night. keep the speeds down and watch out for the trick or treaters. route 1 southbound looks like a

peabody. no issues on 92 southbound now, either. the other major routes are the drive. quick check of the south map. the expressway heavy volume quincy to boston. 128 southbound is starting to get sluggish. route 3 north, 25 north look trouble free. it's 5:17 right now. today marks one year since the death of former boston mayor tom menino. >> this morning, jon keller looks at the impact he had on >> reporter:: today at 2:30, boston mayor walsh will observe a moment of silence to mark the fist anniversary of the passing of tom menino. it is a typically classy move by the mayor and recognition of how significant menino's legacy is to the city and its people. a legacy walsh is continuing in many ways. in the 12 months since his death, other cities around the country have experienced civil unrest over claims of police brutality, but in boston, when

touchy situations do occur, there's a solid connection between police and the community to help ease tension. that's part of the menino legacy. other cities continue to struggle with economic blight. boston isn't quite paradise for everyone yet, but when you hear more complaints about construction-related traffic and parking problems than a lack of jobs and investments, that's good news. and that's part of the menino legacy, too. some cities suffer with mayors who are inaccessible to the press and wouldn't know a sense of humor if they fell over it. by contrast, mayor walsh is readily available and has proven he can take a joke and give one, too. that's the example menino set. other way. one year later, nen nino's passing still -- menino's passing still evokes deep regret. i had my clashes with the mayor over the years but thoroughly decades.

when you leave the hair salon with a fresh hairdo? >> my mom is a hairdresser and knows what it's like to make women look and feel good. >> reporter: most of us have had what we would describe as a bad hair day but have you ever had to wash your hair in a gas station sink or go for weeks without having to wash it or cut it at all? that is the plight of many homeless women. we take to you green tangerine salon for this edition of robi on the road. [music] >> reporter: under the soothing warm water at the salon sink, most women are thinking of when the kid needs to be at soccer practice. this lady has something else on her mind. >> my husband was killed last year, and i'm going to go see my husband's grave. >> reporter: melanie can't

looked in the mirror and liked who was looking back at her. what's daily life like for you? >> it's tough. i live in a shelter. it's tough. >> reporter: most of the women live in shelters. this mother and her emotionally disabled daughter have somehow survived on the street. sheila has a black eye. she says she took a fall, but her face is not the part of her appearance she's worried about. >> if your hair isn't right, i think your whole day isn't right. you know the bad hair day thing? >> reporter: the sailists at green tangerine specialize in turning around bad hair days. in this case, they do so much more. once a month, they open their doors, offer their scissors and their blow dryers and is up port to the homeless women of boston. >> i'm so grateful. >> reporter: when was the last time this woman had her hair done? >> this is my first time since i was a teenager. >> it's always nice to help

people who want to help themselves. >> reporter: all of the hairdressers volunteer time and skill. they come in on their days off to make the ladies feel beautiful for free. >> it's good giving back, especially with the women who don't have much. it fills your heart and to help people out. >> sometimes when you see getting your hair done can change your life, all of a sudden, it's so cliche. it really can because you give these women a little more confidence. they feel better about themselves. >> reporter: then there's the moment when your friends notice at lunch. >> you look absolutely beautiful. >> reporter: you know what else is beautiful? these ladies are having a delicious hot meal courtesy of the women's lunch place in the back bay. elizabeth keely who runs the women's lunch place told me too often homeless women are invisible to the public. >> it's sad. they've all had lives, and they've had misfortunes that have resulted in their being here. we treat them as if they are

the best, the brightest, and most beautiful because many of them are. >> reporter: these women get the chance to feel beautiful at least for one day. [ applause ] >> reporter: so one of the women comes up, hugs me and says hello, stranger. i didn't know who she was. i went to high school with her. she said to me, look it but by the grace of god, most people are one paycheck away from that. >> a woman going into the salon and getting her hair done is worth more than anything. >> you said your mom's a hairdresser so she gets that feeling all of the time. >> growing up, i remember people coming over all of the time and going to her salon. she worked on must bury street for 30-something years. you think about these women. i think the stylists probably get so much out of that experience. >> very emotional. >> the name of the salon again?

fired but held onto his uniform and used it to gain access into two schools in cohasset where he is accused of stealing property from two different teachers. the school does not believe any students were ever in danger. the other big story of the day, the pats who rolled over the dolphins last night at gillette. >> live in foxboro with the team's reaction to another 7-0. >> we don't want to jinx them but they are pulling away from the pack a little bit, distinguishing themselves with this perfect season, 7-0 so far. last night it was 36-7. they had an easy time with that game last night. tom brady leading as he has all season. throwing three touchdowns, two to julian edleman. fans packed in because of the

the team honoring willie mcginest for his induction into the patriots hall of fame. the linebacker was the first player the pats drafted after robert kraft bought the team. changes are coming to a notoriously dangerous stretch of road where a mother and her child were killed in a head-on crash in oxford monday. her 2-year-old is in the hospital. this happened in the same location where more than 20 years ago lisa's husband was killed and paralyzed her son. both families were at a meeting with the engineers yesterday. >> do i think it's a little start. are they going to wait for more people to perish at the site before they finally wake up? it's not fair. >> reporter: crews will install flexible plastic rods on the center line, warning flashers and more rumble strips.

aides say vice president biden met with bernie sanders. >> the meeting took place at the naval observatory in washington yesterday. that's where the vice president lives. the two men talked for about an hour. the sanders campaign says they discussed campaign finance reform and public education. >> jeb bush is denying that his presidential campaign is on life support. the former florida governor spoke at a town hall in new london, new hampshire yesterday. bush's advisors say his poll numbers need to increase, and he has to find a way to stop being overshadowed by his competitors. if you are me, you are thinking of getting that halloween candy, but stores are already mapping out the shopping strategies for the holidays. >> happy friday, jill. >> reporter: happy friday.

there's the opening bell in case anyone wasn't awake yet, an extra alarm. congress has approved a plan early this morning that raises the debt ceiling until march 2017. that means the government can keep borrowing money and increases defense spending. starting to feel a lot like christmas with the world's largest retailer. monday, wal-mart will roll back prices on thousands of products and will last about 90 days. the holiday season accounts for 20% of the retail industry's annual sale. seasonal treats like pumpkin spice lattes in the fall give a huge boost to sales for starbucks. for the christmas season, they will be rolling out the ugly sweater cookie and the holly spice flat white.

at the tobin bridge seeing a stop and go to carter street. chris, kathryn? the pats roll all over the dolphins at gillette. good morning, i'm nicole jacobs live outside of sullivan middle school in lowell where classes are in session today. this is after a pretty scary situation yesterday where we're told about 10% of the student body actually saw the school nurse and went home for the day. five, we're told, displayed symptoms that initially appeared to be carbon none monday knox site poisoning. a closer look by emergency officials indicated it was likely a virus that spread among students. after a thorough cleaning of the school, school is on for today. we're live in lowell. nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. an investigation is under way into this fire on a plane in florida.

into flames on a runway in fort lauderdale as it was taxiing for takeoff. passengers slid down the emergency chutes to get off the plane. one person was seriously hurt. the injuries were mostly bumps and bruises. video this morning of a deadly shoot-out at a texas restaurant. it shows the chaos and several bikers carrying guns. each of the gangs claims the other was the first to fire. police recovers 480 weapons from the scene, including 151 guns. the run away preliminary that crash landed in trees has been shot down. pennsylvania state troopers fired 100 rounds to deflate it yet. the army blimp broke free from its mooring and floated hundreds of miles. the military hopes to remove it
