crashed right into a tree. good evening, everybody. i'm kate merrill. >> and i'm lee merrill. students are holding a vigil in madeline's honor. jim armstrong has our stop story. >> reporter: it's a difficult time here at medway high school. just a short time ago, parents, teachers, coaches and students gathered here at the school and then headed to madeline's neighborhood for an emotional candlelight vigil. a community in mourning. the town of medway coming together in memory of one of their own. a candlelight vigil is being held in honor of 17-year-old madeline lamson. madeline was killed friday night when her car struck a tree in franklin and burst into flames. >> one of the most remarkable women i have ever coached and my heart is just broken that we've lost her so young. and my team is devastated. >> reporter: her friends called her maddy, and she was a three- sport athlete at medway high. classmates and school officials

say she was always upbeat and happy and they can't believe what has happened. >> i went downstairs and talked to my mom and she talked about after she got an email, and it wasn't real, didn't feel real. >> reporter: counseling was provided at the high school both saturday and sunday. the tragedy leaves everyone intotal shock. the vigil is being held in support of madeline's grieving family. >> it's a loss for this town. she was a mentor for the freshmen that came into school. just no words to say what everybody's feeling, our heart and sorrow that they have. >> reporter: her field hockey coach told me the team made the state tournament. right now they're devastated, shattered, but they took a vote and decided to press ahead with the tournament and try to do madeline proud. live in medway, jim smith, wbz news. back to you kate. south boston, a fire at a

housing complex for the elderly and disabled. crews transported two residents to the hospital. a firefighter was treated for cuts to the hand. firefighters say they contained the fire to a fourth floor apartment. residents were evacuated but some are being let back in tonight. investigators are looking into the cause. from new york state a late night crash near the campus of skidmore college has claimed the life of a massachusetts teen. michael hedges of lenox died of his injuries this morning at an albany hospital. he was one of three students hit by an accused drunk driver. the other two remain hospitalized tonight. a halloween scare. one auburn neighborhood after reports that someone was handing out candy embedded with sharp objects but it turned out to be a hoax. >> reporter: it's what parents fear the most about halloween candy that's been tampered with. auburn police initially

reported an 11-year-old girl found thismetallic object inside a hershey's bar. >> it's kind of sad because it puts fear into a night that's fun for everyone. it should be about fun. >> you never want to think it's going to happen in your neighborhood. that's why you should always check. >> reporter: although it was an isolated ensee dent it caused police to warn parents to diligently check all of their candy. >> i said this morning, no one eats anymore candy. >> reporter: police say after further questioning the girl, they discovered she made up the story and placed a piece of metal there herself. >> i hope that child's parents or that child gets disciplined, maybe gets some help, you know. that's just wrong. >> she started off as a joke. then she probably didn't think about it being h big around. >> reporter: so although this was a cruel trick, auburn parents say they still always check their children's situations like this. >> we dumped out all the candy

and went through each piece, piece by piece and make sure everything is safe. >> what is the rule, guys? >> not to eat candy unless dad says so. >> or mom. >> reporter: in auburn, i'm paul burton, wbz news. >> police are warning kids to go through candy to see if they got a picture like this. it's cough syrup for children. sample packages were left outside of a home on old farm lane. a mosque vandalized in burlington. take a look. someone spray-painted usa all over the islamic center of burlington. the council on islamic relations is calling this a hate crime. they want an investigation. the center also says this is not the first time someone spray-painted usa on this very same mosque. salem saw a lot of people last night for halloween but

turns out it was a relatively peaceful night. 78,000 ghosts, ghouls and goblins were in the streets. the warmer temps brought a lot of people in, but police only made eight arrests, down from a year ago. the festivities were winding down by 11:00 last night. the dog is at an animal hospital recovering from multiple stab wounds. the owner says her dog would occasionally get loose but would always find its way home. this time a neighbor knocked on her door telling her someone had stabbed her dog. she found him on the street bleeding from several wounds. firefighters took the dog to the animal hospital and police are now looking into who did it. fire investigators are trying to find the cause of an early morning fire that badly damaged an apartment complex. it broke around 2:00 this morning on williams street. flames shot through the roof of a unit on the end. everyone did get out safely. the complex has 19 apartments. the blaze was contained to the unit where the fire started.

are trying to figure out what caused this raging boat fire. the fire broke out at 5:00 this morning on the 35-foot fishing boat named good grief. neighbors reported hearing an explosion. the flames spread to another boat destroying both vessels. the man who inspired the ice bucket challenge is raising money for another cause. >> hundreds ran today in beverly in the inaugural road race. pete's father says this race will benefit a lasting memorial to his son. >> all the accolades that pete's ever got, the "sports illustrated" awards, this is going to be a permanent structure for his lasting memories, so that's what's so cool about it. >> the money raised today will benefit pete's park designed to abilities. the new york city marathon, among the thousands of runners a team of 22 running in martin's memory.

developing news tonight, navy investigators are trying to confirm the wreckage found in the bermuda triangle is from the cargo ship el fargo. they're using a deep ocean vehicle to take a closer look at the wreckage.it sank after sailing into hurricane joaquin. 33 crew members were killed. russian president putin has declared a nationwide day of mourning after the crash of a jet in the sinai peninsula in egypt. >> brian webb has the story. >> reporter: the airbus 321 broke apart at high altitude, but the cause remains unknown. the wreckage is scattered over a 6-mile area of the sinai peninsula. an area where egyptian security forces have battled local islamic militants for years. recently they pleading their

the jet carrying 224 people was on its way to russia at 31,000 feet, the pilot reported technical problems. in 23 minutes after takeoff, the plane disappeared from radar. family and friends flocked to st. petersburg airport looking for answers. this man's wife was passenger. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: russian search teams arrived to help retrieve the bodies of victims and help find the cause of the crash. the black boxes have been recovered, but not deciphered. a spokesperson from the airline says they have no reason to believe that there was any error by the crew. sunday is a day of mourning in russia for one of its deadliest air disasters. brian webb for cbs news. the rivalry is getting more intense between two floridans running for the white house,

be able to see 100 shooting stars per hour. the meteors and the first snowfall in boston the average tenth of an inch of snow 27th. year. we didn't have much know last year until the end of november and 2 1/2 inches of snow around boston. today's high 62 in boston p. nation. there's a lot of warm air, 60s and even 70s. that is all destined for new england. nice mild air coming our way this week. the cold air is shut off in canada so we won't get any of that. the northern fringe of this front, clouds may stream in from time to time tomorrow morning. but the current temperature is 58 in boston. it really isn't going to go down too much. the wind is still out of the southwest. boston hour by hour slowly going down to the lower 50s by later this evening. in the early morning hours starting out around 50 to 52. we'll be up around 60 by the lunch hour tomorrow.

for the bus stop forecast, fall jacket, 48. remember the sun is rising earlier now at 6:18. that's the flip side, it's good to have the daylight earlier in the morning. but the flip side, of course, is the sun will be setting at 4:36 tomorrow afternoon. just bear that in mind. it's going to be a mild afternoon when you get out of school. a high temperature in the lower 60s should be very pleasant, much like today and a lot sunnier than today. as we go through the night, some of the cloudiness across extreme southern new england may come up tomorrow. we may see some of it from time to time as the system streams out to the south of us, but that's all. most of the rest of the region will be in good shape. tuesday will be nice and sunny all day long. that's probably going to be repeated on wednesday, too. high pressure to the south. the jet stream like this is going to continue to drive the warm air our way. much of this week as the cold air just completely closed off in canada. lower 60s tomorrow. i wouldn't be surprised to see upper 60s on tuesday. on many of these days there

jeb bush was a very strong governor, probably the strongest governor in the history of the state of florida. he was a young guy and i think there were some folks in the legislature that thought they might be able to run over him. that didn't happen. one tax cut wasn't enough- he had to do more. it wasn't enough to have 15,000 kids with school choice in florida, he wanted to have 100,000 kids. if he didn't like a project, it was going to be vetoed. it didn't matter if you were a republican. it didn't matter if you were his best friend. he said: 'this is where we're going, this is how we're going to reform state government...' every politician comes in talking about making change, and generally there's not much change. but governor bush made a lot of changes. he got the nickname if he saw something in the budget that he thought violated his conservative principles, you could guarantee it was gonna get whacked. he vetoed a bunch of my stuff and i was the senate president. the message to washington, d.c., is 'get ready...' because there will be change. nright to rise usa is responsible
