it feels like the end of summer out there. >> if you liked yesterday, today will be a hit, too. >> it will be even milder, you guys. we'll flirt with 70 degrees in many communities. it is a cooler start this morning, though. temperature in boston right now is 47 degrees. the dew point is 40, and the wind is out of the northwest add 6 miles per hour. yesterday at this time. morning. keene at 34. same in taunton. 47, again, in the city, and 50 in chatham. we're 37 in falmouth. so it depends on where you are. there are a couple of pockets of fog. back through beverly. temperatures in the lower 40s for your drive to work and sunrise coming up at 6:20. degrees. we'll top out 65 to 70 this afternoon, mild and clear right around 60 for the ride home.

we have another warm day tomorrow. and we're tracking a couple of showers through the middle part of the week. details coming up in a few. we're following two breaking news stories for you. the first in canton where police are on the scene of a s.w.a.t. standoff. >> this started as a report of a stabbing on washington street, but then they haven't released any information. the media is being told to keep back. we'll bring you a live report from the scene as soon as we can. breaking right now, an active murder investigation under way in dorchester. the victim is a 21-year-old man. police say he was shot just after midnight. investigators have been on the scene looking for evidence. there have been no arrests. right now, police don't have a suspect description. 4:32 is the time. new this morning, the mbta has approved the installation of new technology to improve safety on the rails.

the technology is called positive train control. it can automatically slow down a train to prevent accidents like this amtrak derailment that killed eight people in philadelphia last may. the government has mandated that it be installed on all trains and tracks. "the globe" reports installing this technology will cost the cash-strapped mbta more than $451 million. the agency is already considering fair hikes just to close its deficit. toxic chemicals disguised as treats handed out to kids on halloween. now police in hop kin continue are trying to -- hopkinton are trying to figure out who's responsible. >> reporter: at first glance, this may look like a candy, blue and round. police say this is no treat. this is a dangerous toilet bowl cleaning tablet given out to trick or treaters. >> i can't imagine anyone playing this prank on kids.

>> reporter: two children, one 6 and one 14 both made the discovery in their candy bag. both were trick or treating in the downtown area. >> i think i was really surprised at what went on. this is hopkinton. you don't really expect that sort of thing. >> reporter: stephanie's 13- year-old son benjamin was also trick or treating in the downtown area. she has gone through his candy to make sure. benjamin says he has his own system to be safe. >> if i see something, i'll just split it open if it looks weird. >> reporter: police want the warning out to check candy bags carefully again, but for moms like dam owens, they want more information. >> the reaction from a lot of my friends was, we hope it was an innocent mistake. we hope it was someone who didn't realize they were doing and put this inadvertently in their halloween candy. >> police are still investigating where this came from and why. these worried parents tell us they are just relieved it was caught in time.

>> definitely seems like something people will have to be more vigilant about, innocent mistake or not. >> reporter: police don't believe kids grabbed these. they instead think someone slipped it into the candy bag and worry there could be more out there. so they are asking parents to search the candy bags again to find more of these. the good news, no one has been injured. in hopkinton, kate merrill, wbz this morning. parents in hudson, new hampshire had a scare this hall hoe wean. a parent -- halloween. a parent found a razor blade inside. police are investigating. 62-year-old den nice robert was shot and killed while out for a walk on a sung evening last -- on a sunday evening last august. there is a reward for information leading to an arrest. a stray bullet rips through the walls of a home, and it just misses a woman's head. she says her scarves actually stopped the bullet. bree is here now with the brockton woman's very close

call. hi, bree. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn. this mother of three tells us she kept her children home on halloween because she was concerned for their well being. she knows she lives in a tough neighborhood but thought inside of her house is a safe place. she was up late watching television in her bedroom early sunday morning. she heard a shot and thought it hit the wall. she checked on her mother in the next room and everyone was okay. so they went back to bead. it wasn't until hours later when daylight revealed that a bullet had entered the second floor traveled through her mother's room inches behind the headboard and passed into her room and stopped feet away in a pile of scarves. >> you need to be safe in your own house. if i could afford it, i would be out of here today. what am i going to do?

>> there were multiple drive-by shootings in brockton over the weekend. an officer with the suffolk county sheriff's department charged with attacking teenagers in norton. the teens say jeffrey peril low approached them and said he was a police officer. when they questioned him, he pulled one of the teens out of the car and began hitting him. officer perillo was not wearing a uniform at the time. he faces multiple charges including assault and battery, disorderly conduct and now he's on administrative leave. we've been following breaking news for you all morning. a s.w.a.t. standoff going on in canton right now. susie steimle, what do we know right now? >> reporter: well, chris, we've been checking in and got to as close to the edge of this very active scene as we can get. police have blocked off portions all around canton. i will step out of the way so you can take a look at what's

1425 washington street in canton. we know that there's been a report of a stabbing and that the s.w.a.t. team has been activated. there is some sort of standoff down the street from where we are standing. we're not sure what they are dealing with at this point, but they are trying to keep the media back and are giving us limited information as this develops. fun under and around this area of canton, it's not easy to get around. it's right near the police department where the scene is going on. so if you drive on washington street, right now, you can't. pleasant street is also closed down. we'll continue to check in with police. we know canton police are handling this. state police are also on the scene. that is the latest. live in canton, susie steimle, wbz this morning. >> susie, we'll check in with you at the top of the 5:00 hour. still ahead, it's election day. >> one city council race is getting a lot of attention because of a big age difference

welcome back. casino gambling is coming to everett, but a new las vegas style nightclub could soon be coming to boston. "the globe" reports a local group wants to open an upscale club in 2017. that will have a hollywood modern glamour scene to it and will include a second location of scorpion bar, a mexican restaurant already open at foxwoods. boston's new year will start off with a bang. mayor marty walsh announced yesterday that the city of boston credit union will responser the midnight night. a report last week says the fireworks will be eliminated but the mayor promised to find a way to save them. the credit union will donate show. here? >> already. and a big deal between video game companies. let's check in with jill wag with today's money watch. good morning, jill.

two video game giant are joining forces. active vision blizzard is buying king vision entertainment for $3.4 billion. activision is the powerhouse behind console video games like "call of duty." this deal would let them expand into the smartphone video game world. king is known for its hit candy crash saga. the holiday shopping season can be make or break for retailers which is why it seems to be starting earlier and earlier. amazon has launched its black friday deals. they will post daily deals until december 22nd. the lightning deals will run at various times throughout the day. disney universal has new competition. hunger games theme parks are hopping. one will be in atlanta and the other in china. this will happen as early as 2019. the "new york times" says visitors will arrive in the recreation of the fictional district 12.

serous clouds adding decorations to the skies. temperatures this morning are a little cooler. 41 in boston and lawrence. only 36 in fitch. manchester's at 40, but jeffrey is 33 degrees this morning. orange sitting right at the freezing mark. the typical spots at the suburbs are chilly this morning. norwood sitting at 33 with patchy fog. norwood at 34. upper 30s from marshfield to plymouth. a lot of it has to do with the wind. a touch of fog. again it's locally dense but it's only out there in a few spots. falmouth has quarter mile visibility right now. yeser 40s for -- lower 40s for the school and the kids.

school and mostly sunny skies today. we have snow just starting to ramp up in portions of utah back through idaho, where 1 to 2 feet of snow will fall into portions of the mountains for the west. for us, high pressure is building in. sunshine today, a quiet stretch of days. tomorrow is a little different because of an onshore wind. temperatures will be cooler at the coastline running in the upper 50s. sunshine. the clouds increase and that's coming in. thursday night into early on friday morning, we may get a brief passing shower and temperatures will still be lower 70s. could be talking about records by the time we get to friday. today 68 in boston. upper 60s, merrimack valley, 60s from the south shore back down to the cape. cool.

most of us will drop back into the 40s. highs tomorrow, a little cooler than today at the coastline with that onshore breeze. we top out around 50 just shy of 60. thursday the clouds increase. 67 with a chance of a shower at night into early friday. 72 degrees. then turning cooler as we head into the weekend. it looks dry, though, sun and clouds, 60 on saturday. 50 on sunday and more seasonal for the start of next week. guys, back to you. a taco bell executive has been fired over this video that shows him attacking an uber driver in california. this happened after the driver decided the customer was too drunk and asked him to get out of the car. the passenger is facing assault charges. as far the driver, he says he's done working for uber. it is 4:47 right now. there is another uber driver who is in trouble with the law. >> the grandmother is breaking the rules every time she gets job. 63-year-old stephanie franz started driving this summer in

portsmouth, new hampshire. now she's been summons to court because uber is not approved in the city. the company can't guarantee it passes background checks but bus. >> i'm drug tested. my fingerprints are registered with the state of new hampshire. criminal background, driving record, everything. i don't want to be a grandmother in jail. >> uber vows to represent franz at her december court date. the company says they will pay her fines, which could reach $1,000. the city of portsmouth did not return our calls for comment. it's election day, and there are no major races going on at the state today. >> one contest is getting a bit of attention and interest in brockton. bree is back with the details. hi, bree. >> hi, guys. generally speaking, there are so municipal elections that it's hard to cover them all. our political analyst jon keller made a special point to go out and meet with the race.

why, you might ask? well, not only because the race is red hot, but also because the candidates are so far apart. at least in age. meet jack lally, a millennial who barely meets the age requirement to run, yet he's/aming four boats where he can't drink. he has no trouble with the age requirement. he is four generations older and by his estimation, better prepared for office. >> we're talking about the real thing now. i think experience means a lot. >> neither of us has served on the council before, so we're at the same level of experience. >> reporter: all right, jack. the 18-year-old says if he loses, he will shake it off and try again in two years. both tell us they think government is broken to kudos to both of them for trying to do something about it. >> there you go. >> thank you very much, bree. this is a story you saw first on wbz.

in april just before jury selection, prosecutors dropped those charges. he tells wbz the past two years have been incredibly difficult and now he wants to clear his name. >> all three victims specifically said in the police report that i didn't do anything to them. both co-defendants with no reason to defend me said i had no role in the incident. they specifically said i was the only one who tried to verb aptly toll it or -- verbally stop it or do anything. heartbreaking justice for a mother who lost her child to a heroin overdose. she helped police find her son's alleged drug dealers. gloucester police arrested these two lynn men, 32-year-old william and eugene for distributing heroin. police would not reveal the mother's identity but was able to provide a cell phone number

that belonged to one of them. >> with this information, we were able to conduct an undercover drug investigation where a police officer possed as a drug user -- posed as a drug user and purchased drugs from these individualsp. >> gloucester police launched the angel program to help stop the growing opioid crisis. it focuses on treating addicts and getting drug dealers off the streets. cbs news is reporting a u.s. satellite detected a heat flash over egypt at the time a russian plane went down. the data is still beingablized in an effort to determine what caused the flash. one possibility is a bomb, but a mechanical failure is also possible. the metro jet airline has been denying any technical problem. the cash killed all 224 people on board.
