beautiful day today. a little milder today. afternoon. it's 47 in boston right now. dew points in the lower 40s. the winds are out of the right now. many communities, including the city of boston 47. 35 in nashua. a lot of the suburbs are running in the 30s right now. we have clouds to the north. we may get a couple here a touch of fog in the typical spots. norwood and blue hill. sunrise coming up at 6:20. fantastic, beautiful lunch hour. sunset's coming at 4:35 tonight. we'll outline a chance of a couple of showers and we'll get you on the roads first. good morning, robi.

we're off to a good start with no backups or accidents to report. it's early. the major route are looking good. checking the north maps, lots of green as we expect at this power. route 3 is smooth coming out of chelmsfordp. route 1 south and 495 look like speed limit rides. chris, kathryn? it's 5:02 right now. we bin with breaking news that we're following. a s.w.a.t. standoff taking place in canton. this all started with a stabbing. >> susie steimle is live near the scene. susie, police are keeping you pretty far away from where this is actually happening. >> reporter: they are, chris. there's not a whole lot that we can see, but we can give you a glimpse of the scene. we're at the perimeter. this police cruiser is marking the edge of about as close as

intersection of dedham and washington. a couple hundred yards down the way, we can see police vehicles in the dark. it's pretty quiet down there. police say that someone has barricaded themselves inside of 1425 washington street, and that did start with a stabbing. responded overnight. we know state police, stoughton, norwood and canton are actively working on this as well as a s.w.a.t. team has been called in working on this investigation at this point. they have shut down a number of roads, including right where we're standing on washington street. there's also pleasant street that has been closed down if you are somebody that drives around this area of canton. if you are familiar with canton this is right near the police department. right now, that's all we can tell you. we'll continue to check in with police throughout the morning and keep you posted. live in canton, susie steimle, wbz this morning.

>> thank you for the update. also breaking, an active murder of a 21-year-old. investigators have been looking for evidence at the scene. there have been no arrests. right now, police say they don't have a suspect description. new this morning, new technology to improve safety on the rails. >> it comes with a big price tag. it's called positive train control. it can automatically slow down a train to prevent accidents or derailments like this one that killed eight people in philadelphia last may. the government is mandating that it be installed on all trains and tracks. it will cost $451 million. the sag already considering fare -- the agency is already considering area hikes. toxic chemicals disguised as streets handed out to children. nicole jacobs is live there and

police are urging all parents to check their kids' candy. >> reporter: of course. by now, children are well into their halloween candy bags. police here in hopkinton don't believe this is an isolated incident, so they are really wanting to send out that warning now. a night of fun trick or treating seemed typical until this bathroom bowl cleaner made its way into a mix of treats. >> i can't imagine someone playing that kind of a joke or prank on kids trying to trick or treat. >> reporter: parents are being warned to check the bags and candy because a 6 and 14-year- old made this dangerous discovery. >> the reaction from my friends and i are we hope it was an innocent mistake. >> reporter: they don't believe kids grabbed the bowl cleaners but perhaps they were sidelined

into the bags of street -- they were slipped into the bags of treats. so police say no one was actually hurt by this. no one actually ate the candy, but again or i should say bowl cleaner that appeared to be candy, but they are sending out this warning for parents and children to do a double-check of the candy bags. live in hopkinton, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. meanwhile, families in hudson, new hampshire, also had a scare this halloween. a parent checking a candy bag found a razor blade inside. the parent gave it to police and they are investigating. a stray bullet ripped through the walls of a home just missing a woman's head. she says her scarves actually stopped the ballet. bree is here now -- stopped the bullet. bree is here now with the latest. >> reporter: this mother of three kept her children home on halloween because she was concerned about their well being.

she knows she lives in a tough neighborhood but she thought inside of her house has to be a safe place. she was up watching television bedroom. she heard a shot and checked on hoer mother in the next room. everyone was okay and went back to sleep. daylight revealed a bullet entered the second floor, traveled through her mother's room inches past the headboard and into her room just feet away in a pile of scarves. >> you can't be safe in your own house. if i was renting, i would be out of here today. it's my own house so what am i going to do? i have to be here. >> reporter: police believe she was the unintended victim of a drive-by shooting. no arrests have been made. the fbi is now joining the murder investigation of a new

shot and killed while out for a walk on a sunday evening in august. there is a $42,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. an officer with the suffolk county sheriff's department charged with attacking teenagers in norton. those teenagers say jeffrey perillo approached them and said he was an officer. he wasn't in uniform. when they questioned him, he pulled one of the teens out from the car and began hitting him. perillo is on administrative leave and is facing multiple charges including assault and battery and carrying a firearm while under the influence. two burlington teenagers are now accused of vandalizing a local mosque. the 18-year-olds were in court yesterday. police say they were out drinking halloween night when they spray painted usa on the burlington islamic center and through eggs at the building. investigators say surveillance video captured the entire thing include the moment they get out masks.

it was actually a police car. >> the video that's out there, one of the officers was watching it and saw the car and saw something particular on the vehicle that raised his attention to it. he thought it could be a vehicle he knew from town. >> reporter: prosecutors are being urged to charge the men with committing a hate crime. now to a story you first saw on wbz. a teenager is suing the city of somerville for $1 million for wrongly accusing hip of rape. galileo mondo was charged with raping boys at a soccer camp two years ago. prosecutors have since dropped the charges against him. he tells wbz the past two years have been incredibly difficult and now he wants to clear his name. >> all three of the victims said i didn't do anything to them, specifically said that in the police reports. both of the co-defendants at the time with no reason to defend me both said i had no role in the incident.

even one of the victims in the police report specifically said that i was the only one who tried to verbally stop it or do anything. >> the mayor's office disputes mond ox's complaint and calls -- mondo's complaint and calls his lawsuit unfounded. a new national survey has ben carson surging past donald trump. the poll has the retired neurosurgeon leading the republican field 29%. trump is now in second place with 23%. marco rubio picked up points after last week's debate. the florida senator is third with 11%. harvard professor lawrence lessic is ending his bid to run for president. he passed a big reform package and he was shut out of the democratic debate. coming up, breaking the rules. >> the new hampshire

. welcome back. there will be fire works to welcome the new year in boston. the city of boston credit union will sponsor the midnight fireworks as part of first night. >> on friday, there was a report that the fire works would be eliminated, but the mayor promised to find a way to save them and he did. the credit union will donate $30,000 to put on the fireworks show. people raved about the fireworks last year. there were two shows. one over the common and the seaport. >> i can see how that could kaz a bit of a panic if you are expecting it. >> remember how cold it was last year? >> oh, it was. >> i don't remember that. >> it was chilly.

[ laughter ] if you liked yesterday, you will like it again today. 47 degrees in boston right now. we have a lot of 30s on the map so it is a bit of a cool start. portsmouth to lawrence. nashua as well. 33 in jaffrey this morning. 32 degrees in norwood. 34 in nashua. middle to upper 30s in new bedford to marshfield. 42 in hyannis. depends on where you are in the cape and islands this morning. touch of fog out there as well, notice visibility is fine in most areas. the typical spots in norwood back up to blue hill a little bit of fog is burning off. aside from that, bright sunshine to start our day.

end of school, short sleeves. no question about it. beautiful. northern new england has a couple of showers. rain and snow showers in northern maine right now. that's the surge of the warm air coming in. quiet. carolinas. high pressure, the big blue h on the map. the biggest difference tomorrow is the wind is going to come in off the ocean. so that will mean the coast sideline running cooler in the upper 50s. thursday, start with sunshine, clouds increase late in the day. thursday night into early friday morning, we may get a couple of showers here. then this cold front back to the west doesn't arrive until friday night into early saturday. that will bring some gusty wind with it and a return to cooler temperatures as we head into the weekend. not today, though. 65 to 70. wow, well above average here today.

it's going to feel warm out there. overnight tonight, similar to this morning, although, i don't think we'll be quite as cool. most of us drop back into the light and variable wind onshore. a sea breeze kicks in. so low to mid-60s across the interior. another day that features lots of sunshine. thursday, the clouds increase, though. still mild, chance of showers thursday night into early friday morning. record high temperatures. low 70s. then we cool off this weekend. there may be a lingering shower along the south coast early on saturday. 50 on sunday and more seasonal as we head into the start of next week. traffic and weather together, robi. >> one of your loveyer forecasts of the year so far, would i have to say. >> did it feel good yesterday? >> it did, but i did not rake. >> i'm just saying, i know you have to do it in shifts, right? >> yeah. >> light winds, 60s, sunshine.

>> i wish i could say the same thing will happen with traffic throughout the week. right now, no reports of major accidents or slowdowns. here is a live look at 93 in somerville as we look at the north. southbound is moderate to heavy volume right now woburn to boston. the rest of the major routes from the north are speed limit rides. lots of green but the expressway is very busy braintree to boston. no troubles on route 3 north, 24 north, or 95 north right now. that's going to change in about 15 minutes. chris, kathryn? 5:18 right now. an uber driver in trouble with the law. the grandmother is breaking the rules every time she gets behind the wheel of her second job. stephanie franz started driving this summer in portsmouth, new hampshire. now she's been summoned to court because uber is not

across the state will hold elections. >> jon keller takes a closer look at why it's important for vote. >> reporter: good morning. there is a one in seven chance you have an important election in your city and town when 53 cities and towns will hold elections for local offices. there is a 70% chance or better that you don't know about it or darn. i know, you may be thinking, here we go good inwith another finger-wagging lect clure on the importance of voting. i do find it pathetic when a large majority of the population fails to exercise a basic right of citizenship, i can understand when peel feel so alienated by the state government, i understand. but it's harding to think of an aspect of our daily life that local government doesn't touch than to imagine one that does.

we're following two preaking news stories for enthusiasm morning. the first in -- stories for you this morning. the first in canton. police tell us this started with a stabbing on washington street. a man was rushed to norwood hospital. no word on his condition right now. police, trying to speak with a person inside of a home. several roads remain closed in the area along pleasant street and washington street. we'll have a live update for you coming up on susie steimle. and breaking news a victim was shot after midnight, and he's 21 years old. there have been no arrests med. right now, police don't have a good suspect description. the everett high school football star who was stabbed over the weekend remains hospitalized but in fair condition. 16-year-old marvin scored the winning game touchdown on saturday night. the everett school superintendent says he was

walking with friends after a party when another group started throwing knives at them. he was attacked trying to help a friend get away. a mother convicted of trying to kill her son by withholding his medication wants a new trial. kristin la brie's attorneys asked the state's highest court to overturn her conviction. her son injury may suffered from leukemia. at her trials, she testified that jeremy couldn't handle any more chemotherapy, so she withheld his medication. he died several months later. her defense is arguing that the state could not prove she was trying to kill her child. a beloved south boston church is closed, deemed unsafe for parishioners. st. vincent de paul church was built just after the civil war. for years now, plaster from the ceiling has been falling. netting was installed six years ago but the problem got so bad, the church had to shut down and future is uncertain now. >> it's really one of the most

beautiful churches in the archdiocese of boston. i really hope we fight back and preserve all of those great institutions that were so meaningful for family life in boston's neighborhoods. >> the decision of whether or not to repair the church is now in the hands of the archdiocese. meanwhile, parishioners have to go to other churches. the globe is reporting a local group wants to open an upscale club in the seaport district in 2017. the nightclub will have a hollywood modern glamour to it and will include a second location of scorpion bar already opened at foxwoods. it's election day. there are no major races in the state today, but one contest is getting a lot of interest in brockton. bree is here with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn. generally, there are so many municipal elections that it's

hard to logistically cover them all for us. city councils will be chosen today. but we met with the candidates from brockton's ward 6 race. why? because the candidates are so far apart, at least in age. that was jack lally there, a millennial who just barely meets the age requirement to run. he's stumping for votes in bars where he can't legally drink. his opponent is four generations older and by his estimation, better prepared for office. >> we're talking about the real thing here now, and i think experience means a lot. >> neither of us have served on the council before, so we're at the same level of experience. >> reporter: touche. jack says if he loses today, he will shake it off and try good enin two years of. both candidates tell us government is broken so kudos to them for doing something about that. >> thank you very much. we'll see who wins it.

at least 31 in norwood with scattered frost out there this morning and also a little bit of fog. upper 30s in provincetown. 50 in chatham. we have sunshine out of the gate once it comes up except for that touch of fog that's isolated. again, it's quiet across the nation. some showers out of the carolinas. stretching into idaho and parts of montana. for us, high pressure is building overhead. today, mostly sunny, beautiful. tomorrow will be a little cooler because the wind will come in off the ocean. cooler water temperatures and the wind coming in off that water will keep the coast in the upper 50s. thursday, we start with sunshine. clouds will increase. thursday night into friday morning, we may get a couple of showers and then another surge of warmth comes in. friday me may approach record highs topping out in the lower 70s. look at this today, just shy of

70 in many communities. nashua, bedford, boston included in this. we'll be five degrees above where we were yesterday. worcester county back in through southern new hampshire as well. upper 60s plymouth to taunton. nor wad is 70. what a rebound, right? 60s on the cape and islands. tonight, mostly clear, quiet. 49 degrees downtown. some of the suburbs will dip into the lower 40s so not as cold as this morning. high temperatures tomorrow, a little cooler than today. a light wind means a sea breeze kicks in mostly sunny. upper 50s at the coast. mid-60s across the interior. accuweather seven-day forecast, 67 on thursday. the clouds are going to increase, and there is the threat for showers thursday night into early friday morning. low 70s to end the week and then we turn cooler this weekend. the only thing we'll have to watch, a couple of showers may linger along the south coast early on saturday. then we turn cooler. more classic fall weather,

>> reporter: good morning. i'm susie steimle live in canton where there is an active standoff going on between a man and police just down the street from where we're standing. it's at 1425 washington street that's been going on for the past couple of hours. we though there's one man inside of this home and also another man who's been sent to the hospital with stab wounds. at this point, police do not know what escalated the stabbing between these two men, but there are at least four different municipalities on the scene at this point in time as well as a s.w.a.t. team surrounding this house. we have heard them on the loud speaker to communicate with the person inside. if you live in canton, this has shut down the roads and while have an impact on driving in this area. for now, we're live in canton, susie steimle, wbz news this morning. cambridge police searching for a would-be bank robber. this surveillance picture shows the man inside of the leader
