friday. >> it's in the 50s and 60s so we're above what our average highs are typically after the highs in the mid-70s yesterday. we've only cooled back into the lower 60s. 63 at logan airport. the dew point is 60, too. it feels sticky as you step out. southwest winds at 14 miles per hour and a lot of us are running in the 50s and 60s as you step out. a mild start. middle 60s here. we do have low clouds. yesterday. think shower activity that we have over the cape and island overnight has just exited nantucket out to sea as well. 60s, there may still be a lingering isolated shower on the cape. 72 with breaks of sun through the lunch hour here. we top out in the low to mid- 70s today. an isolated shower. we turn cool their weekend.

being ramped up could also bring security being ramped up. >> reporter: it was a crash that killed all on board. a russian plane going down in egypt. a bomb. there's no definite evidence confirming that. >> i think there is a possibility that there was a bomb on board, and we're taking that very seriously. >> reporter: but passengers at logan are leery. >> blaming isis is premature at this point. >> reporter: nonetheless, today could bring yet more security changes to u.s. airports and international travel, especially with the holiday travel season approaching and the effects of 9/11 not far from the minds of many. >> 9/11 gives you a second thought of what's going on. >> reporter: 96% of undercover agents actually made it through security with weapons. massachusetts congressman bill

>> as we look at the bombing, it's sending several warning signals to us, not just to the overall fight on terror but airport security as well. >> reporter: according to congressman keating, some of the changes could include better screening of tsa employees and perimeters of airports. nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. >> thank you for the update this morning. a mansfield man is in court accused of threatening a mom and her baby daughter with a knife. david brock is facing two counts of assault. police say the mom was helping brock pack for a move when he had an angry outburst and charged at her and her little girl. brock's mother says he is bipolar and off his medication. searching a new hampshire neighborhood looking to solve the murder of a 62-year-old mother. denise robert was out for a walk in august when she was shot and killed. the fbi performed a grid search

can see in the video. the renewed investigation is giving her family hope. >> some people may have seen or heard something at the scene of the crime, but there's other people who may have overheard something or saw something after the fact where the perpetrator may have been hide something. >> reporter: detectives offered a reward, but the attorney general's office says less tips are coming in now than when it first happenedp. police in worcester want to nope whose body firefighters found in a burning car and whether or not that person was murdered. investigators were searching for clues yesterday. neighbors say they heard gunshots in the area warn 10:30 wednesday night. a local high school student accused of raping a classmate. prosecutors say 18-year-old patrick cower and several

into the woods. a 17-year-old girl was found in disoriented. the sex was consensual but is he facing charges. serious crashes. in middleborough a motorcyclist a car. there. in sandwich, an offduty firefighter calls for help after a head-on collision. four ambulances responded and two medflight helicopters. three people were hurt, two were flown. no word on what caused that crash. an e-mail virus infecting massachusetts computers. crews were working overnight to fix the problem, but it's unclear whether or not it's been resolved. the virus affected a small number of state computers. over to campaign 2016. chris christie will not be on the stage for next week's

he has been moved to the undercart debate because of the placement in the latest polls. well. kasich will file his paperwork in concord, new hampshire. the time is 5:07 on your friday morning. a group of runners racing to the rescue. the team stopped in the middle of a half marathon to help a family in trouble. >> good morning, bree. >> reporter: good morning, chris and kathryn. team babsy did exactly what runners are famous for doing, supporting others. they abandoned their time and ran across a busy road when they saw a panicked man jump out of a car frantically yelling for help because his father was in the driver's seat having a seizure.

one managed to throw the car in park, another directed traffic, and another called 911. the team wasn't even supposed to be in the race. they begged for the chance to impaired folks. it turns out they were able to help another family in the process. >> i guess all of our theory is to pay it forward. if something happens to us or our family, we hope someone would do the same to pay it forward. >> in the end, they finished 20 minutes behind their original goal. they tell us, they that they wouldn't have done -- they tell us, though, that they wouldn't have done it differently and sent a gift to the family they helped. a generous gesture from a somerville police officer. instead of a ticket, she gives flowers and a thoughtful note.

she was already distraught after moving her mother into hospice care. >> when she was pulled over for going 40 in a 30 mile-per-hour zone in somerville, she broke down. officer ashley katado instead of giving a ticket sent a bouquet of flowers to her home. >> many people think once the traffic stop is over, that it's over but that's not true. we take things and carry it with us. >> reporter: for her to go out of her way to help somebody who amazing. really just incredible. >> officer katado says she's been in situations before where she's wanted to act but sutherland's story really stuck with her because she has a son of her own. >> love that story. >> yeah. >> one of those two thumbs up on a friday morning stories. coming up, we're approaching the halfway mark of the season with the patriots looking to stay perfect.

stop to school and home. temperatures are so mild it's 54 in nashua. a lot of spots running in the 50s. 61 in jaffrey. lower to middle 60s from the north shore to the south shore, cape and islands as well. upper 50s in chatham right now. touch of fog out there, 1 mile visibility in nashua. half a mile visibility in provincetown right now. showers came through the cape and islands overnight. those are now pushed offshore. we may still get a brief shower mid-morning. otherwise, we're waiting on the cold front back to the west to usher in cooler air. it slides east. we may get a brief shower this evening and look at the temperatures behind and dropping into the 30s and 40s. that's the weather that's on tap as we head into the weekend. so between now and mid to late morning, a chance of a shower. it may be an isolated sprinkle

i don't anticipate as much sunshine as we had yesterday, but i do think breaks of sun and peeks of that blue sky are possible this afternoon. a couple of showers across the interior. then partial clearing. then we'll get lingering clouds. it's still going to be a dry saturday. the clouds will be thicker in southeastern massachusetts, especially by the evening with some rain just offshore of the cape and islands. temperatures will be in the 60s tomorrow. saturday into sunday's northwest wind, we clear the skies out. the sunshine will be out. a beautiful fall day with crisp, dry air in place. high temperatures today back into the 70s we go. despite the clouds, 74 in boston would be the record. 71 in worcester would as well. a lot of communities in the lower to middle 70s, 60s on the cape. highs tomorrow 10 to 15 degrees cooler.

route 3 south looking good coming down from lowell. the other major routes from the north are trouble free. the expressway north and 128 south are the only busy spots right now. route 3 north a smooth ride from hingham. it looks like no issues on 23 north or 95 north, either. chris, kathryn? 5:18 right now. on your friday morning, the boston branch of the church of scientology is now up for sale. the church owns the former hotel in the south end and once planned to make it the local headquarters. the building built in 1875 has been vacant for years. meanwhile, emerson college is putting together a task force to decide the future of the colonial theater. emerson shut down the theater last month after the book of mormon closed. the school needs a new decline dining hall, but it's been criticized for thinking of using one of the most popular performance spaces for that purpose. the bruins lose their fist

steve burton has more in this morning's sports. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. on paper it is a mismatch. the perfect 7-0 patriots against the redskins. the patriots will tell you don't read the paper. in fact, throw the paper away. the extra time off helps for sure, but the regular season will be half over after sunday's game. despite the big differences in records, gronkowski and blount be their opponent's biggest better be ready. >> it's important to win the game in general because that's the culture around here. they base a lot of things on a win around here. so you know, we can't get to the ultimate goal unless you win football games. that's what we're trying to do just like any other week.

. a young man applying for college finds out he is a missing person. he's 18 now and disappeared 13 years ago from his home in alabama. his father took him and changed their names. it was only when julian applied for college that he discovered his social security number didn't match up and he was in the national database of missing children. >> it was just great for me to be able to tell the mother that, hey, you know, all this time, i don't know what you have been thinking, but all this time he has been alive and is doing well. it is a good thing to be able to step out of the negativity and walk into something that's positive. >> such a crazy story. julian's father will face charges in alabama. julian and his mother have been in contact and she is overjoyed at finding her son. a woman almost hit in the

head by this piece of wood on the highway is now speaking out about the close call. bree, what a scary scene. >> reporter: indeed, chris. she was on her way to work on i-91 north when a tractor- trailer picked up a piece of wood and sent it flying into her windshield. the pictures of the after-math are jarring. she said it happend so fast she didn't have time to think about it or even that it could possibly hit her windshield. she moved to the side of the interstate and called for help. if it hadn't struck her dashboard at an angle, she different. >> it could have been a disaster and all i have to deal with is a broken windshield and minor damage to the car. so very, very fortunate. >> she actually kept that piece of wood and shards of glass from the windshield and has them in her car as a reminder of how lucky she is. kathryn, chris, back to you.

bipolar and off his medication. homeland security sources tell cbs news that officials are working on quick fixes to security at u.s. airportsp. >> some changes for international flights could be announced as early as today coming in the wake of growing evidence that a bomb may have been planted on a passenger jet russia. all 224 people on board died. those concerned about security are making people uneasy. >> jon keller explains why it should never gotten to this point. >> reporter: one of the most discouraging aspects of the horrific attacks on our country on september 11, 2001 is what we learned afterwards about the many unheeded warnings about the potential for such an assault and gaps in our homeland security. here at boston, logan airport and airline officials were warned by her own experts of problems with security but were essentially ignored.

afterwards, everyone vowed to never left it that again. but the toxic brew of incompetence has let it happen again. a congressional committee this week was told that layers of aviation security are "simply missing." last month that same inspector general trying to put a positive spin on the security debacle said he was "hopeful that the days of tsa sweeping its problems under the rug are coxing to an end." 14 years after 9/11 and we're hopeful they are going to start doing their job properly? are you kidding me? as always, in addition to decrying bureaucratic inertia and governmental ineptitude, we should ask ourselves hard questions as well. are we so obsessed with comfort and convenience that we're willing to roll the dice? do we have memories is short we can't recall the consequences

we've got gusts 30 to 35 mile- per-hour range. the warm wind, though, is dragging in the mild air. i don't think we'll see as much sunshine as yesterday. most of us will be dry. 5:30 evening commute, here are the breaks. a brief shower possible inland this evening before partial clearing comes in tonight. tomorrow will be a dry start to the weekend but look at the clouds. they will be a little stubborn tomorrow. our temperatures today, record to beat in worcester, 70. same in boston. a lot of us will be in the lower to middle 70s. we'll be surprised if we see more breaks of sun. 70 to 75 in the monadnock region and worcester hills. 60s on the cape and islands. 60s.
