look over 93 in somerville. andover between 495 and 125 and woburn between commerce way and spot pond. route 3 south looking heavy and slow. bumper to bumper, 128 southbound you crawl logan to the split. out in sturbridge, we have slowdowns going on now after an earlier crash. the ramp from i-84 to the mass pike east is partially blocked out there. we begin with a developing story. cbs news learning that security changes are coming to u.s. airports. that announcement is expected today. it comes nearly a week after a russian plane crashed in egypt. >> there are concerns this a terrorist bomb may have brought down that plane. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, chris.

we hear of the tragedies that automatically raise concern over airport security. now with holiday travel ramping up, we could also see a ramp upch security. >> reporter: its about a crash that killed all on board. a russian plane going down in egypt. isis taking responsibility for a bomb. though no definite evidence confirming that. >> i think there is a possibility that there was a bomb on board, and we're taking that very seriously. >> reporter: passengers at logan are leery. >> they are blaming isis and it's premature at this point. >> reporter: nobody theless, today could bring yet more security changes to u.s. airports and international travel, especially with the holiday travel season approaching and the effects of many. thought. people just kept going on. >> reporter: the recent inspector general report indicates 96% of undercover

agents made it through security with weapons. massachusetts congressman bill keating says change is overdue. >> as you look at the bombing, it's sending several warning signals to us not just in the overon fight on terror but airport security as well. >> reporter: according to congressman keating, some of those changes could be better screening and perimeters of airports. nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. >> nicole, thank you very much. police are investigating two serious crashes. in middleborough a motorcyclist died in a collision with a car on route 44 last night. in sandwich, the offduty firefighter calls for help after a head-on collision on route 230. three people were hurt. two were flown to the hospital. no word on why the crash happened. a mansfield man will be in

threatening a mother and her baby with a knife. police say the mother was helping brother pack for a move when he got angry, had an outburst and charged at the woman and her little girl. police are trying to identify a person found dead inside of a burning car in worcester. the car was found near wild wood avenue. police searched for clues all day yesterday. neighbors say they heard gunshots around 10:30 wednesday night. a team of fbi agents searched a neighborhood searching for the murder of denise roberts who went for a washington in august and was shot and killed. the renewed investigation is giving her family new hope.

a bruin of runners racing to the rescue. the team stopped in the middle of the half marathon to help. >> chris, team babsy is famous for doing what they do, supporting others. they ran across a businessy road when they saw a frantic man jump out of the car. his father was in the drive area's seat of the car having a seizure. one managed to throw the car in park, another called 911, and someone helped direct traffic. here's the kicker. the team was only on the course because the race director made an exception. they wanted to push a jogger for babsy who has ms but that's not usually allowed. it turns out they were able to

you can see the shading on the map there. can't rule out a spotty shower. otherwise, a lot of the day is been dry. a few showers across the interior. that's the cold front, behind it, the wind shifts around out of the west and then the northwest. just to show you a dry day but lingering clouds. there will be rain that comes close to nantucket tomorrow. you may debt a brief shower then clearing comes in late tomorrow until sunday. bright sunshine crisp breeze. today, 74 degrees. we'll beat the record in boston. 60s on cape cod. high temperature tomorrow for our saturday. only in the upper 50s and lower 60s. the cooler air in many communities. highs on sunday drop even more

this morning, we're hearing from the woman who was nearly hit in the head with this. take a look. a piece of wood smashed through her windshield on a busy highway. >> hi, bree. >> reporter: whether a lucky lady this is. she was on her what i to work on i-91 north when a tractor- trailer kicked up a piece of wood in the middle. interstate and sent it flying into her windshield. the pictures of the after-math are jarring. she says it happend so fast she didn't have time to think about it or notice that the wood hit her windshield. she calmly moved to the side of the windshield and called her help. if it hadn't struck at an

angle, she says it could have been different. >> all have i to deal with it is a broken -- with is a broken windshield and minor damage to the car. very fortunate. >> reporter: she kept that piece of wood and shards of glass from her windshield in her car as a reminder of how fortunate she is. chris, back to you. mbta says work is under way now to reinstall glass t station. crews removed those panels in september because the seals were defective, allowing moisture to get inside causing the windows to get foggy. the manufacturer paid for the replacement panels. the team tells "the globe" more than half of the glass panes have been reinstalled. it's set to open up in the spring. a generous gesture from a somerville police officer. instead of giving a speeding ticket to a driver, she gave flowers and a thoughtful note. she was already distraught after making the difficult

decision to move her mother to hospice care. >> when she was pulled over for going 30 in a 40 mile-per-hour -- 40 in a 30 mile-per-hour zone she broke down in tears. the officer decided not to give her tickets and instead sent her a bouquet of flowers. >> many people think once the traffic stop's over that's it, they are forgotten, but it's not like that. we in take pride in that. >> nor her to go out of her way to help somebody else who was having a rough day it was amazing. really just incredible. >> the officer says she's been in situations before where she's wanted to act but the story stuck with her because she has a son of her own. >> just a nice thing to do going out of their way. a lot more coming up in the next half hour. toyota refreshing up business

out there. i am keeping an eye on the crash north of boston. it's up in lowell. route 3 southbound is causing a backup between 129 and 495. checking to the south, only terrible riders on the expressway jammed from the split to columbia road to 128 southbound crawls to the split. 95 north is not so bad. look at route 3 northbound over on the right-hand side of your screen, pretty smooth ride from weymouth. and unveiling plans for stepping up security at u.s. airports. it could happen as early as today. the development come as mid an ongoing investigation into what brought down a russian plane over egypt. u.s. intelligence says terrorism is the leading theory. >> nicole jacobs is live for us this morning. good morning. >> good morning to you, kathryn and chris.

those who are frequent fliers and those who fly only occasionally, you walk into logan airport and can see some of the security measures that have been implemented through the years, but we learn today through cbs sources we could see more security measures in place as early as today. this as isis has claimed responsibility for a bomb they say took down the russian aircraft as a holiday travel season approaches, massachusetts congressman bill keating says change is overdue. >> if you look at the bombing, it's sending several warning signals to us, not just on the overall fight on terror but airport security as well. >> reporter: the exact changes set to be implemented are unclear, but congressman keating believes it could have more to do with more screenings of the tsa employees. live at logan airport, nicole

security are making a lot of people uneasy this morning. >> and jon keller explains why it should never have gotten to this point. >> what we learned in 2001 is afterwards about the unheeded warnings, the potential for assaults and gaps in our homeland security. here in boston, logan airport and airline officials were warned by their own experts they were essentially ignored. afterwards, everyone vowed to never let it happen again. the toxic pru of incompetent -- brew of incompetence has let it happen again. a congressional committee this weeks told layers of aviation security are "simply missing." last month, that same inspector general trying to put a positive spin on the security

"hopeful that the days of tsa sweeping its problems under the rug are coming to an end." 14 years after 9/11 and we're hopeful they're going to start doing their job properly? are you kidding me? as always, in addition to decrying bureaucratic inertia and governmental ineptitude, we should ask ourselves some hard questions as well. are we so obsessed with comfort and convenience that we're willing to roll the dice? do we have memories so short we can't recall the consequences of this in addition. are we so naive that we think isis or other savages can't get us if they want to? let's hope the questions get asked and the answers are better than we thought.

behind it 50s, 40s and 30s as well. that's the cool air that will come back this weekend. let's take you through the hour by hour forecast. you can plan things out now through the mid morning. i can't rule out a sprinkle, but most of us will be dry today. while we won't be as bright, and there may be a brief shower around this evening, 8:00, 8:30 in the city of boston. that's the actual cold front coming in. tomorrow is a dry day, but there will be some lingering clouds around. i wouldn't be surprised if nantucket gets a brief shower tomorrow. the wind shifts around out of the northwest. these are the wind directions around here, clears us out bringing in the crisp, fall air. look at these high temperatures. about 20 degrees above average.
