>> it absolutely was. we do have another round of showers on the way for the day. temperatures are yoon farm. we're -- uniform. we're getting a touch of drizzle across the lower connecticut river valley as well. even though it is a dry start, we're tracking rain that's also advancing through pennsylvania right now. this is the same disturbance that brought severe weather and rockies and midwest. so for us, no severe weather, no snow, but scattered showers that move in as early as midday. so noontime, temperatures around 50 degrees, scattered showers. notice it's pockets of light rain as we head into the evening hours, 4:00 p.m., light rain coming through, unfortunately during your evening commute, but a tapered scattered shower with temperatures rising all the while into the upper 50s through the evening. we'll talk about the weekend coming up.

for now, back to you guys. we begin with breaking news this morning. a wrong way driver causes a crash that injures a state trooper. a witness called police to say someone was driving the wrong way on route 6 around 11:30 last night. two troopers used their cruisers to protect other cars on the road until the wrong way driver hit one of the cruisers. the officer inside went to the hospital. so did the wrong way driver. a developing story from revere. police say an armed robbery happened in the parking lot of a fairfield inn. it started as a meet-up from craigslist. the victim answered an ad for a pair of sneakers, but when he showed up at the meeting place, he was robbed at gunpoint. one person has been arrested. police are searching for another suspect. fan dual isn't backing down -- fan duel isn't backing down in new york. they are defying an order from that state's attorney general. >> so the message to the half

million customers in new york is to keep playing this morning. on tuesday, the attorney general told fan duel and draft kicks to cease operations in the state saying they are violating gambling laws. draftkings called the announcement flawed and say they are challenging that ruling. yesterday massachusetts' attorney general maura healey does not plan to shut down the fantasy sites in massachusetts but doesp want protections in place to protect customers. she'll offer her recommendations by the end of this year. lasers. the beam of light came from the same general direction each time. investigate. arrested. meanwhile, police shoot and kill a gunman at a francisco. investigators say he was armed with two weapons in an elevator tower and taking aim at a

nearby hospital. lockdown. the gunman was wanted for a goods store. there were no other injuries. dating profile. a crime. at least six people have been robbed as part of a so-called cat fishing scheme. scammers urge potential matches to meet them at home. when they show up, they are robbed at gunpoint. >> i would never meet anyone that i wasn't absolutely certain of who they were in a remote area or a secluded area. >> while anyone you meet online could be a cat fisher, boston police say scammers use a very attractive profile picture, won't skype or use a web chat and their profile may appear new or incomplete. a judge will decide whether a pennsylvania mom accused of triggering an amber alert will get her kids back. tiffany cherry says her

decision to bring her infant son from pennsylvania all the way to boston saved his life. he was in need of emergency medical care and cherry wanted to get him care at children's. even though she passed dozens of other hospitals on her drive from wilkes-barre. police say gary pinmeant waved a replica gun at another driver until police pulled him over in medford. he faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct. several presidential hopefuls will be back in new hampshire today. jeb bush will attend a house party today. rick santorum is speaking at a breakfast event in manchester then heads to concord to file his paperwork. ted cruz is also filing paperwork at the statehouse today. john kasich will hold a meet and greet in exeter. last call may not be debting later after all. -- getting later after all.

apartments, 200 hotel rooms, grocery store, movie theater, bowling alley, 600,000 square feet of office and 300,000 square feet of shopping space. >> what's your reaction to that? >> well, traffic. >> the area is already bad on a good day. tonight was terrible. >> when i drove down here, i was like, why did i go this way? >> it is pretty bad, especially where tourists drop off at north station and have to go down. it's just difficult. >> reporter: the plans do call for 800 spots of parking. not enough, say some. just look around now to know that parking is at a premium. for the general manager of this restaurant, he says it's a trade worth making. >> a lot of our business is driven off action at the guarden. it's nice to see there will be more people off nights or summertime to help the whole city out. >> reporter: the 950 million project is privately funded, but according to the boston globe, you can get hefty tax

welcome back. it's 4:41 on your thursday morning. mcdonald's upping the game when it comes to snacks. >> one national food chain is doing away with tipping. jill wagner joins us live from the new york stock exchange with today's money watch. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning, chris and bree. joe's crab shack will become the first major national restaurant chain to test the no- tipping policy. the menu prices will go up by about 12 to 15%. staff will have a higher base bay. new york restaurant owner danny meyer recently announced he is banning tipping at his restaurants.

macy's stocks fell 14% yesterday after the retailer said sales fell in the last quarter. macy's said the unexpectedly warm weather this fall had fewer people buying sweaters and coats, but macy's also thinks sales will fall next year. there is good news for shoppers, more markdowns. macy's is teaming up with lens crafters who will be opening eyeglass stores inside of macy's. first it was all day breakfast. now mcdonald's is thinking snacks. the fast food chain is adding mozzarella sticks to the menu. a box of three should cost $1 and will be available next year. >> so we can get one dollar worth of cookies in a bag and $1 worth of mozzarella sticks in a box? >> or you can go two boxes of mozzarella sticks for just under two bucks. >> jill, this sounds wonderful. horrible according to every

46 in boston. 44 in nashua. we're pretty uniform in the 40s across the region because we've had clouds that have rolled in as well. so they've been stuck in place with patches of drizzle across the lower connecticut river valley. otherwise, it is a cloudy, cool, but dry start to the day. here's the disturbance. you see the counterclockwise spin from the west right now? behind it, a lot of wind kicking up and ahead of it showers advancing through pennsylvania. that is a warm front that will approach later on this morning and afternoon. scattered showers as earl-as midday lingering into the evening and overnight tonight, we get clearing skies that come in. tomorrow, we start with sun. the clouds build in. there may be a sprinkle in the worcester hills and berkshires. friday night into saturday, we get snow showers in the mountains. otherwise, our weekend is looking dry but breezy on saturday, crisp, dry air and then sunshine with a few clouds mixed in on sunday. so let's zoom in a little bit between now and 10:30, a couple

of showers here worcester massachusetts. these will advance in to the western boston area. notice they are scattered in nature. although, i think by the time we get to 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. there will be steadier pockets of light rain that you'll have to encounter for your evening commute home. anything. we're not talking extremely heavy downpours or anything like that. by 8:00 p.m., there are scattered downpours and any time after midnight, leftover showers and sprinkles. most of us will end up with left than a half inch. high temperatures, a little cooler than average, too. 50 to 55 for most of us during the day. overnight tonight with the skies partially clearing, we drop into the 40s. coolest readings will be 48 downtown. highs tomorrow, a little milder. we should approach 60 but fall just shy. the issue tomorrow is the gusty wind. the wind may gust as high as 40

afternoon. you will certainly notice it. saturday will still be breezy, sunday lower 50s. so the coolest day in the we have another warming trend and should be back up around 60 week. mid-60s by wednesday. that looks like a pretty quiet stretch, too for the weekend bree. long time wbz sports anchor bob lobel is suing a newton golf course claiming discrimination against people with disabilities. lobel uses a specialized golf cart that allows him to play while seated. he uses the cart all over new england but the woodland country club says it ruined their greens. lobel argues the cart weighs less than a lawn mower. >> i was convinced it was a lack of understanding. then it went to a willingness to not understand and an effort to not understand. >> the club president issued a statement to wbz saying the

golf cart caused significant impressions and tears on the greens. "damage to our greens represents an unreasonable burden to hundreds of members." it looks like we're losing the battle of the bulge. the centers for disease control says the obesity rate is now 38% of adults. that comes despite years of public awareness campaigns about the dangers of sugar in processed foods. drinking carbonated water is a growing trend. many think it is a healthier option but that may not be the case. >> reporter: sales of carbonated water in the u.s. has doubled over the past few years. >> i have a family of diabetics who still drink them because i can't convince them to just drink water. >> reporter: not all fizzy water is the same. christina is a registered dietitian and says it's

>> the best bet is to use something without any type of sweetner. >> reporter: sweetners are often found in tonic and flavored sparkling waters. even the ones with artificial sweetners can lead to calories and weight gain. >> they may be affecting our taste buds or hunger later in the day. >> reporter: then there are drinks like seltzer and club soda, which are essentially bubbly water. hyde says carbonated waters pose a slight risk to people with irritable bowel syndrome because they can cause bloating and club soda contains sodium. overall, both are healthier choices than sugary soda. >> by drinking too many calories and finding the alternatives is great. >> reporter: hyde says infuse regular water with your favorite fruit for healthy are alternatives. some think carbonated water

pair of sneakers, but when he showed up at the meeting place, he was robbed at gunpoint. police are still searching for another suspect. a former police officer in new hampshire will be sentenced today for assault. ex-officer mark richardson pleaded guilty to slamming the head of a suspect into the wall at the seabrook police station in 2009. you see that surveillance video of the incident. the state is recommending a one-year jail sentence with all but one day suspended if richardson seeks treatment. according to "the globe," several insurers have begun imposing restrictions on painkillers like oxycontin and vicodin. some are lifting restrictions on addiction treatment or assigning caseworkers to help addicts in the recovery process. a new documentary is in the works about the station nightclub tragedy being made by the lead singer of the band who was playing when the deadly

100 people died when fireworks ignited a blaze in the west warrick, rhode island club. former great white singer jack russell said he's never had a chance to apologize for his band's role in that fire. he hopes the documentary will be a fitting tribute to the victims. a taunton familiar lip's dog is back home after spending a cold night down a 25 foot well. the higgins family was worried sick when they couldn't find buddy. another led him to the well and buddy was there when the fire department came and used a harness to pull him out. >> i looked down and he wasn't moving after i called his name. he started moving. he was in about a foot of water. >> the family now plans to fill the well. buddy, by the way as you can see right there, is doing just fine. >> so cute. good for buddy. a pop warner seem is dedicate its season to a teammate who died too young. the football team in hyde park

is undefeated. they wish their cowboy captain junior was there to lead them on. junior took his own life two weeks ago. his brother says he was the victim of bullying but that he kept the pain inside. >> we probably could have done better and can actually do better now for people around us and even people who aren't directly connected to us. >> when they see any type of bullying, they nip it in the bud right away. it's almost like they are treating each other like brothers and sisters. >> some of these players had a chance to play for their high school football team but made the decision to play pop warner in honor of their friend. it is a prime time prize for stephen colbert. a special live edition of his late show will air immediately after the super bowl on cbs. if you can't wait until february 7th, you can see the "late show" every weeknight on wbz after the 11:00 news. tickets go on sale today for a pretty cool event at fenway park.
