>> reporter: good morning, guys. it won't be as wet as it was yesterday. in fact, it is a dry start this morning. temperatures are in the 40s for uniform and fairly mild. it's clouds out of the gate with drizzle out of the lower connecticut valley. the showers and downpours are already making their way from pennsylvania. the showers will arrive by the early afternoon for most of us. 1:00 p.m. is still mainly dry and pockets of light to moderate rain for each of us and temperatures gradually rise into the 50s. so we'll take you to the guesty wind tomorrow and get you on hi, robi. >> we have an accident north of the city and a couple south of town. the latest is up in lawrence

495 -- lawrence, 495 southbound with multiple cars involved. we also have a disabled truck at 49537 then two accidents south of the city. an earlier crash in braintree has traffic backed up to logan express. chris, bree? we start with breaking news. a state trooper injured in a crash with a wrong way driver. >> that sent the trooper and the driver to the hospital. nicole jacobs is live at the state police barracks in south yarmouth. so far, the driver is not facing charges. >> reporter: not right now. i want to say first, chris, the driver of the pickup truck and the state trooper are okay. no major injuries as far as this situation goes, but i want to get you right to video from overnight.

in an attempt to stop the driver and protect other drivers, the state trooper positioned himself between the wrong way driver and other drivers and that's when the accident happened. we're told the wrong way driver condition. as a result of that, he, too, is being treated and right now, filed. that's the latest from south yarmouth this morning. nicole jacobs, wbz news this morning. in a developing story, police say an armed robbery in the parking lot of the fairfield inn started as a meetup from craigslist. the victim answered an ad for a pair of sneakers, but when he showed up at the meeting place, he was robbed at gunpoint.

draftkings called that analysis "flawed" and say they are challenging the ruling. yesterday, massachusetts' attorney general maura healey says she does not plan to shut down the panty sites here but wants protections in place -- down the fantasy sites here but wants protections in place. this assault was caught on surveillance camera. ex-officer mark richardson pleaded guilty to slamming the head of a suspect into the wall of the seabrook police station in 2009. the state is recommending a one-year jail sentence with all but 21 days suspended if richardson seeks treatment. a roadway suspect is in court today. he waived a replica gun at another driver during a road rage incident. that driver followed his car and the police pulled him over in medford. he's now facing charges of assault and disorderly conduct.

presidential hopefuls are in new hampshire today. jeb bush will attend a house party. rick santorum is speaking at a breakfast event in manchester and heads to concord to file paperwork to officially get on the presidential ballot. ted cruz is filing paperwork today and will hold a meet and greet in exeter. donald trump doubling down on his immigration policy. he wants a deportation force to remove illegal immigrants. eisenhower in the 1950s. many say it was a dark time in american history and ended with mexicans. >> no, no. humane way. >> is that the america that represents this extraordinary country? are those the values that people fought for? >> reporter: democrats usually pick up votes from minority groups when republicans boast workers.

hillary clinton tweeted about trump's plan calling it inhumane and absurd. last call may not be debting later after all. the sponsor of a bill that would allow bars in greater boston to stay open past 2:00 a.m. now says the timing just isn't right. cities and towns need more time to study the effects of later closing times. opponents also tell statehouse news the pill was too road and could allow some bars to stay open 24 hours. we're getting our fist look at a new project that will transform boston, drastically changing the area near the td garden. susie, not everyone's so happy with this plan. >> reporter: yeah, unfortunately, there are some people who don't love this idea. we're live in front of the td garden. as you know this is a very busy area in the city of boston. a number of people worry it will only make it more congested. like it or not, construction is scheduled to begin soon and

look at the third graders from the lawrence family development center charter school in lawrence. last month, guys, there was a ceremony marking the official opening of the stem center, which is fantastic. barry said you guys knew a lot about the weather, which i love to hear. to we're going to rise into the 50s by later on but by the end of school, we get scattered showers that come into the mix money wear all in the 40s as you are stepping out. pretty uniform so it's clouds out of the gate and it will be back into the mix by tomorrow. the storm we're watching is the same one that was responsible for severe weather yesterday. a number of tornado reports in iowa and the snow in the rockies. look at the amount of energy. see the spin right there. it will kick up the wind pretty high in the northern plains and great lakes. tomorrow.

lawrence just before mass avenue. the left lane is blocked up there. we've got emergency vehicles with a couple of tow trucks there now. also, 93 southbound is heavy traffic. route 3 is sluggished between 110 and 129. the faa is investigating lasers pointed at three planes in dallas last night. nobody was hurt luckily, but the beam of light came from the same general direction each time. a police helicopter was sent up to investigate. no word on if anybody was arrested. the united nations has paveed the way for airlines to be tracked by satellite. it is a technology that came to the forefront after the disappearance of a malaysia airlines jet last year. right now, the movement of planes is monitored by land- paced systems which leave 70% of the earth's surface uncovered. it would allow nations to set aside radio frequencies to be used for satellite tracking. police shoot and kill a

in san francisco. investigators say he was armed with two weapons in an elevator tower and taking aim at a nearby hospital. the funman was wanted for goods store. there were no other injuries. a lawsuit over birth control. more than 100 women say they got pregnant because of a packaging error with their birth control bills. 2011. the fda pulled $3 million worth of birth control packets because some of them had been rotated 180 degrees. the women are seeking millions of dollars to cover the costs of having and raising a child. health insurers are joining the fight against opioid addiction, according to the "boston globe." several insurers have begun imposing restrictions on prescriptions of painkillers.

long time wbz sports anchor bob lobel is suing a newton golf course claiming discrimination against people with disabilities. he uses a specialized golf cart that allows him to play while seated. the new england country club says it ruined their greens. lobel argues it weighs less than a lawn mower. >> i was convinced it came from a lack of understanding. then it went to a willingness to not understand and an effort to not understand. >> the club president issued a statement saying the golf cart caused significant impressions and tears on the green. "damage to our greens helps an unreasonable burden to hundreds of members." 6:23 right now. some call it the war on christmas.

it's the push by retailers and other national chains to acknowledge the holiday season without offending anybody. >> jon keller talks about if the need to please everyone is >> reporter: good morning. here we go again with the annual sign of the season, the bickering over whether or not the religious aspect of acknowledged. when did all this start and who can anyone remember? i recall a night at least 20 years ago attending the annual holiday concert at my son's public elementary school, which once was known as the christmas concert, and watching with mountain horror as the kids performed hanukkah songs, kwanzaa songs, even jingle bells but no christmas carols, not one. many of my christian neighbors were furious about it, and i didn't blame them. things have gotten so bad since, a christian marketing firm is now promoting a christmas buy-cot complete with a web site encouraging consumers to shop at businesses

according to how sensitive they are to christian beliefs and traditions. one of the fist targets of the buy-cot, starbucks, said to be disrespecting christmas by rolling out blank red cups for the season by contrast with dunkin' donuts, which has the word joy on their seasonal cupsp this. is confusing because starbucks also offers a product called christmas coffee while the dd cups never mention the word christmas. both companies say this he respect all faiths and traditions, as they should, and maybe that's the way out of this silly holiday grievance spiral we're stuck in. just showing respect for all, minus the knee jerk political correctness. is that really so hard or as rodney king, the drunk driving whose beating at the hands of police led to the 1992l.a.

harrison boulevard. 24 north is starting to back up from avon to bridgewater. chris and bree? a state trooper hurt while trying to stop a wrong way driver. >> it appears that driver may have had a medical emergency. nicole jacobs is live at the state police barracks in yarmouth with how this all unfolded. nicole? >> reporter: bree, the good news is that the trooper and the driver of that pickup truck appear to be okay. they've been treated at cape cod hospital. i want to show you video from overnight around 11:30 is when this call came in. reports of a wrong way driver on route 6 in barnstable. in an attempt to stop the driver and protect other drivers from possibly being hurt by any collision there, the troopers slowed traffic behind them. that is when the driver of the pickup truck crashed into the trooper's cruiser.

the t says he'll face charges. he's now undergoing a mental health evaluation. police in dover, new hampshire hope the police surveillance pictures will help them catch an arsonist. someone torched a car in the pork are parking lot late monday night. investigators want to talk to the man saying he might have information about the crime. a new documentary in the station nightclub tragedy being made by the lead singer of the bland that was playing with that deadly fire probing out. fireworks ignited a blaze in the west warrick, rhode island club. he hopes the documentary will be a fitting tribute to the victims. somerville native andy nutt enlisted to fight in vietnam.

doctors to map your baby's future health right now. >> doctors say they might be able to predict whether your child could contract a disease when they get older, but would you want to know? >> bree, some are calling this the book of life. the new genetic screening being done here at local hospitals. for the fist time ever, doctor -- first time ever, doctors are sequencing the genome of newborns. look for the possibility of future diseases and conditions. currently, all newborns are screened with a blood test for dozens of medical conditions but with genomic sequencing, doctors will check for more than 1600. this could reveal alzheimer's, heart disease and certain cancers and can determine if a patient can have a positive or negative reaction to a medication. they can find out what, if any,

most of us see a dry but windy friday. rain showers changed to snow showers in the mountains friday night into saturday. otherwise, our weekend looks like classic fall weather. the winds will subside as we head into sunday. hour by hour, between now and late morning, showers do arrive along and south of the mass afternoon. rain is in place. notice the exception cape and arrives mid-afternoon. the evening commute will feature pockets of light rain. there may be a few downpours embedded in here as well. plan accordingly for the drive home. not anticipating any torrential rain or anything like that. and clearing comes in after that. a tenth to a quarter of an inch for most of us. the wind will increase out of the southeast this afternoon. about 10 to 18 miles per hour. overnight tonight, partial clearing, breezy and cool. most of us drop back into the 0s.
