explosion at the stadium and now this hostage situation, it has clearly been a night of attacks in paris which are not to be coordinated. >> we're getting word from the producer that the latest report from france is that 26 people are now confirmed dead. the number seems to be jumping almost by the minute. associated press has a reporter who was there in that stadium. let's go live to scott pelley. . >> this is a cbs news special report. we're going on the air right now because multiple attacks are being reported in the city of paris tonight. there are reports of gunfire and explosions. many are dead, many are wounded. this is the scene as recorded about an hour ago on the streets of paris. this is unfolding in multiple locations. police say that there was a mass shooting in a restaurant near the center of the french capital, which would have been

there have been at least two explosions near a soccer stadium where germany was playing france in a big game tonight. the president of france was at the game. he has now been evacuated from the stadium and is at the interior ministry, which runs the french version of the fbi. he is apparently meeting with all of his emergency response heads there at the interior ministry as we unroll this video four of various scenes in the central part of paris. there is in the 10th and 11th east. we're also told at this hour third location. casualty numbers at this early

hour will all be wrong but french police are reporting that many people have been killed likely somewhere over a dozen, but we want to emphasize that we do not know what the casualty numbers could be. all of this has been unfolding over the last hour or so in the french capital. we have our cbs news reporter elaine cobb on the phone with us from paris what are you hearing. reporter: this is all unfolding and very conniptioning. police are now saying there are at least 18 people dead, more are injured. they believe 15 people were killed in an attack on the concert hall in the area. we're also hearing there's a hostage situation underway at

out at the where the game was and trans. the president is seeing what can be done next. the police have no idea at this stage who is behind the shootings, the hostage-taking or the explosions. they are trying to find out anything they can. but for the moment it's very much an effort to evacuate the area. there are police surrounding the let wrote stations there. they are stopping people going down the streets they are stopping people get into the metro, and people in the area they are confused. several different areas, and so for the moment there is a lot of fear in eastern paris.

where the charlie ebb do shootings happened. >> 17 people were killed back in january on a magazine and also a jewish grocery store, and then you may recall in august three americans stopped a would-be terrorist with a machine-gun who was onboard a french train. so this is the third incident in and around the paris region this year, and to recap where we are right now unfolding as we speak, there are multiple attacks in several locations ongoing simultaneously in paris. there have been commotions, there have been mass shootings, police are now reporting more than 25 people have been killed, but again, in these early hours those casualty numbers will definitely change. we will have more about this on your local news on this cbs station.

between germany and france he's been rushed to the interior ministry where he is meeting with advisors. the gunmen have not been captured which would explain why they are staking out the metro stations. ed davis is joining us on the phone. in the midst of this chaos what can police in paris do right now? reporter: well, there are multiple units responding to this incident, and they are setting up extra teaming i can locations around the city. there will be a lot of snow cuss on the places where the incidents have occurred but they will also be deploying swat teams and bomb disposal units in other places in the event this is an ongoing situation. this is an event similar to what mumbai experienced sometime ago.

and the fear of multiple teams being deployed to a metropolitan area is high on the list. what makes this complicated the president was at one of these venues and that certainly is a problem for the forces and indication of a high level conspiracy here among enemies of france. >> ed i know you've traveled the globe talking about security. what is it about france? we saw the charlie hedbo attacks. are scott pelley mentioned a few moments ago we had the three americans who stopped that terrorist on a train back in august. what is it about france what is it about paris why does this keep happening? international city and crossroads to travel to europe and the middle east. and so all the players come

together in paris. and it's a city that has large populations of individuals from the middle east and a lot of these problems are stemming from that area. you can see this kind of incident being planned there and executed there and today. >> let me ask you ed we were talking about the 11th and 10th these neighborhoods next to farther away. how even with all these agencies do you try to coordinate a response over that kind of an area? reporter: it's extremely difficult. the larger the area that these suspects are operating in the harder it is to lock it down. so again, they are going to concentrate on the areas where these attacks have occurred, but they also have to be looking at the metro system, they have to be looking at other means of transportation and trying to identify these

individuals, determine how many of them there are and get them in custody is the biggest now. command and control is clearly coming out of the president's office based on what we're hearing. but they will have communication problems when cell phones don't usually work. there's a series of things that through. you have misinformation, something that they call fog of war, where a lot of the information that the officials are getting hasn't been vetted, isn't true. they are trying to get the real facts on the table here. then launch an immediate campaign to find these guys. >> ed davis on the phone with us describing what's happening in paris right now. you can see in these live pictures police are everywhere in these two upscale neighborhoods where on a friday night you'd expect to see many people out and about at restaurants. we no that the first shoot

shooting was indeed at a restaurant. we're also told that at least 60 people being held hostage right now. explosions heard near a stadium where there was a soccer match between france and germany. in fact we're going to try to get some video of the match is ongoing where you can actually hear the explosion, actually stops the players for a moment because you can hear one of the two nearby explosions. those two explosions being described by france media as two suicide bombings. >> that stadium holds 81,000 people and there was an associated press reporter in the stands who described the ground shaking when those two explosions went out. they were loud enough to actually be heard over the roar of the crowd. we're going to be getting much more information perhaps the most pressing situation is the hostage situation dozens of people inside the concert hall. we'll take a quick break.

stands at 35 in four separate attacks. there are a hundred hostages right now at the concert hall that is also where at least, according to france press 15 of the victims are dead. >> give you a sense what you're looking at. left-hand side of your screen, folks inside the stadium where there was a soccer match between france and germany were in the middle of editing the video where you can actually hear one of the nearby explosions, apparently by a suicide bomber. you can see the shock on the face of the people there. some of them players standing around not sure of what to do. the french president was in attendance was evacuated from that area is now in emergency meeting as france tries to coordinate what to do next and how to track down the people who were responsible for these horrific attacks. as they mentioned 45 reported dead by the associated press. >> again these hundred hostages at the concert hall.

right now according to french television police are trying to seal down this enormous city as much as they possibly can. they are armed in the metro stations which so many people for transportation. french tv reporting the gunmen been caught. reports from the stadium explosions were caused by suicide bombers. >> it sounds almost as if the bulk of the fatalities were at the restaurant where there was the first shooting. and outside of the concert hall where the hostages have been taken. incredibly sensitive situation happening right now where you have 100 individuals being held inside this concert hall and don't know what's happening them. >> you mentioned david a moment ago some of the video that may be coming out of presence sounds like we have that video now of at least one

terrifying give you a sense france. france playing germany in that soccer match. that's a stadium that holds 81,000 people it's the fifth largest stadium in europe. the french president was there it was built for the world cup back in 1998. this is a place where tens of thousands of people would have been inside the building and many more would have been outside. >> as you're watching this here on your television you may be thinking boy, what does this mean for major cities across the world. what does it mean for us here back at home? we can tell you that the u.s. homeland security department monitoring attacks in paris say that there is no known credible threat against the u.s.ment officials are in contact with their foreign counterparts amid reports of multiple shootings and multiple explosions in paris. so again officials back here in

happening over here in paris it does not at least at this point seem to be an international affair where we need to worry about anything happening here in our city. but again the numbers are just staggering right now. 35 confirmed dead by the associated press. more than 100 people still being held hostage at this hour. again a friday night in paris where we're getting the most troubling of news and we will continue to monitor everything that's happening there and we will pass along any new information as it comes in here to the newsroom. >> while we are talking about terrorism it is reasonably certain a drone strike killed jihadi john. >> news of the airstrike changes nothing for the family of james foley the first of the terrorist victims. foley's father told kristina haeger today the doesn't make a

reporter: right david. james foley's mother diane actually just came home and spoke with us. she said it is a sad day. we spoke with her husband john foley. >> i don't think it's jihadi don jihadi james, he was a low level operative in that objection. reporter: if he sounds frustrated it's because a little more than a year after his son james foley was publicly beheaded by the terrorist known as jihadi john. john foley doesn't think taking him down will change the war with isis. >> i'm not impressed at all we may have eliminated jihadi john.

reporter: james foley was held captive for two years before his death. his parents has become critical of the u.s. handling of hostages. >> he is dead bombing him won't bring jim back won't change the war, you know. we need to eliminate isis. reporter: if his son were alive he says he'd say the same. >> he would want justice for all the people who are dying, the kids with no parents who are suffering give me a break. jihadi john is nothing. he is zip, absolutely zip. reporter: the foleys put out a statement saying if only so much effort had been put into finding and rescuing the today. we'll hear more from john and in rochester new hampshire
