a soccer stadium deadly violence in at least four locations. shooting, two explosions, and an ongoing hostage situation. >> we have been getting new throughout this half hour. ryan this the satellite center with the latest breaking details. reporter: those numbers are already staggering at least 40 people have been killed in a wave of terror that is gripping the city of paris. s explosions could be heard on the streets of paris. video shows police all over the city as this violence is bragging out. as you just heard one of the sites of the violence was a very jam packed soccer stadium. take a listen. that explosion went off during

the french president was actually in the stands for the game security whisked him out of the stadium. he's being briefed by emergency response leaders on a very busy friday night we're hearing a mass shooting two restaurants near the capital and french media is reporting there is a hostage situation at leave a hundred people are now being held against their will at a concert hall. we're hearing the show there is one that would draw a very young audience. right now authorities are searching treats streets and the subway system for any of obviously everybody thinking about the big cities here boston, new york city. the department of homeland security is saying there is no states at this time david and list. >> all right ryan if you get bring it to us. we've been talking about cities tonight. right now the department of is no known credible threat in the united states. >> of course the big question

something like this we saw back hedbo attacks. it was an al qaida group that had branches in yemen. coordinated attacks like this several things going on at the same time. isis also is usually behind something like this. they have done things like this before but of course at this point officials in france are down the people who are behind this because lisa at this point we haven't heard of any reports of anyone being taken into custody. >> in fact the latest report, this is from cnn there are 6 to 8 hostage takers inside the theater who are quote engaging with police. police now staking out all of the major subway stations the metro stations in paris in an effort to try to find these guys. >> we do get many different reports coming in at the same time especially nowadays with social media. but we can tell you that there

is a cnn affiliate in france that has said there are at least 60 dead. we've seen the number go from 11 to 26 to 40 now up to 60. many more of course as you just mentioned being held hostage with this california band traveling overseas holding this concert tonight on a friday night in paris. >> for those of you who are familiar with some of this music the two men who formed eagles of death metal are from queens of the stone age. so that provides some context they were on a european tour. this was a sold out concert tonight in the 11th and some of the witnesses say even outside the theater there were bodies on the sidewalk. >> attacks in france back in january, there were the three americans who thwarted another attack back in august by tackling a man on a train in paris. earlier in this newscast we were able to ask wbz security analyst ed davis why paris? >> paris is a very international city and

crossroads to travel to europe and the middle east. and so all the players come together in paris. and it's a city that has large populations of individuals from the middle east and a lot of these problems are stemming from that area right now. so you can see this kind of an incident being planned there and executed there and tragically there appears to be today. >> ed talked to us about of course he knows boston marathon bombings what police have to do in a situation like this where there are many different things happening all across a major city and really where do you start australia try to track down the individuals? >> and compounding that is that it's dark. and in paris right now as you can tell in some of these pictures this is a late night city. so would you have a lot of people out on the streets. you would have a lot of people in restaurants in these metro stations both as we try to ensure your city is safe and

try to apprehend the people responsible and we have learned in the last few minutes that there is an official terrorism investigation underway. the french president now at the interior ministry with his police and in constant communication with them to try to get this situation under control and save the hostages in that concert hall. >> my guess is that at some point we will hear from our president back here at home. president obama has been briefed on the situation. we mentioned that french president was in that stadium at the time of the explosions. we have the video, and i don't know if we can pop it up at some point of what the soccer players could hear. it was not far from the stadium you had these two what are being described as suicide bombings near the stadium.

>> she received thousands of cash and benefits. louisa has more on this troubling story. reporter: for months joanna leigh man attend her story she was the one that were injured right here, right near the finish line, but today justice served as she quietly pleaded get a bizarre experience for one real marathon survivor. >> that's really the truth is just that i was disappointed. reporter: tom ralston's feelings about joanna lee can only be described as complex. a picture on april 15th, 2013 captures her by ralston's side after the second boston marathon bomb erupted. rupturing his eardrums and shooting him with shrapnel. >> the woman stayed with me the entire time until emts arrived. reporter: a stark contrast from the figure who appeared in suffolk county court. on friday the woman pleaded guilty taking nearly $40,000 in

benefits including 8 grand from the one fund after falsely claiming she received a brain attack. sentence three years of probation and ordered her to pay back all the money. >> it's like a crazy cry. it's like stupid. reporter: leigh rushed out of court with nothing to say no apology for the more than $9,000 she received from a gofundme page or the roughly 1800 from a middle school fundraiser. >> i think an apology is important. i think she realizes what she did was wrong. she's just have to live with that. she owes me nothing. . reporter: leigh's attorney says she will pay that money immediately using her mother's

. as we look live over paris where there has been a major terror attack there in at least four locations we learned the president back here at home is expected to speak on everything that is happening overseas and that should be happening coming expect it at 5:45. >> there is some word out of paris that at least 30 people may have escaped from that concert hall where hostages had been taken. islamic terrorism has been a major concern in france particularly since january there more foiled plots. jon keller joins with us a look at that. >> france has been a relatively frequent target of terrorist

it has all of the appearance of coordinated terrorist attack. there was a bombing at a large stadium in paris where the germans and the french teams were playing. the president of france was at the game. he was evacuated. he is safe and he is meeting with his cabinet in an emergency meeting tonight. there is also a report of a mass shooting at a restaurant of a dozen people killed there. here is the president at the white house live. >> once again we've seen an outrageous attempt to terror eyes innocent civilians. this is an attack not just on paris it's an attack not just on the people of france but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.

only values the french people care about but they are values that we share. those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening. we're going to do whatever it takes to work with the french people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice and to go after any terrorist networks that go after our people. we don't yet know all the details of what has happened. we have been in contact with french officials to communicate our deepest condolences to the families of those who have been killed, to offer our prayers and thoughts to those who have been wounded. we have offered our full support to them. the situation is still

unfolding. i've chosen not to call the french president at this time because my expectation is he's very busy at the moment. i actually by coincidence was talking to him earlier today in preparation for the g-20 meeting , but i am confident that i'll be in direct communications with him in the next few days and we'll be coordinating in any way that they think are helpful in the investigation of what's happened. this is a heartbreaking situation and obviously those of here in the united states know what it's like. we've gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves. and whenever these kinds of attacks happened we've always been able to count on the french people to stand with us. they have been an extraordinary counterterrorism part they are and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion. i'm sure that in the days ahead

and an attack on a theater where police have said many hostages have been taken. our cbs news correspondent elaine cobb is in the paris tonight we have her on the phone. elaine what do you know? reporter: well scott, the anti-terrorist squad of the police have been now put in charge of this investigation and says that the it has decided that this is definitely serious enough they believe there's very strong likelihood that this was a terrorist attack. so, they are going to take charge of the entire investigation and that will be overall the various police forces. the mayor of paris has now gone to the concert hall where we're hearing there is still a hostage situation underway. unclear if the hostage takers have made any demands at this stage. the police have not said anything about that. and the president of france is
