>> let's talk about this new generation of leaders and protestors and tactics are crucial to any movement's success. >> that's correct. >> there has been controversy at times over tactics from the location of a protest last december on the common next to a christmas-tree lighting to the blockage of major highways to the hassling of news media on the missouri campus. i admit that we in the media focus on the most sensational controversy and a lot of what goes on peacefully and not disruptively, doesn't get reported, do you think these tactics are productive. >> some are probably misguided. the key is that if you compare to what we did, rossa parks sat down on the bus because we wanted to make sure that the transportation was open to everyone. so, therefore, they did a bus boycott.

at the lunch counters, we served at the lunch counters and not just to whites. the point that i'm trying to make is that when black lives matters, they have not been clear in terms of what their end goal needs to be or wants to be. what is it that you want? missouri was a prime example, they wanted resignation to change the climate. we have to have them adopt goals to define what it is that you want and then be very deliberate about getting it. >> because rossa parks was the wife of a local ncaa lawyer who was chosen as the most appealing face of a lawsuit they wanted to file to overturn the racist practices of the bus company. >> she wasn't the first choice, the other person selected

and rossa did and grateful that she did it. >> it was very calculated. >> it was very calculated and that's all we are saying, they need to be more deliberate and calculated. >> we will continue the conversation in a moment with darnel williams.

>> welcome back. -- williams. longest serving african- american in boston ousted and newcomer. in this case and more broadly, is there a generational change under way in black community leadership here? >> i think it is and i think that we need to thank charles yancey as well as steve murphy, those folks that have served a long time on the council but i think that this is this is there's a yearning for a connect to the new generations and voices that are coming. i think you see tito jacksons on the stage. how do we nuture and develop and support them as they are coming up the pipeline? i think served 32 years on the council, that's a significant knowledge. so we don't want to lose that knowledge base but we also have

to usher in the new regime. >> what's the challenge for the new leaders? identify, if you would, one thing for me that you feel has to change about the way in which the community is represented politically. >> people want to label carpet baggers and i think that's bad. stop labeling people and hol them accountable for results. what is elected official supposed to do at the local, state or federal levels, bring resources or change conditions in community in which you live. that's what you measure them by, not by the gender or the sexual orientation or external factors that we try to derail people. the second piece i would say, we need to know the history, but we must not be trapped by it.

bostonians have a tendency to know the history and as painful as it may be. but they are trapped by it and moving forward. >> speaking of moving forward. hillary clinton has got a huge lead for the democratic nomination and her campaign poses itself as the choice of the black community. is that true? >> well, i think that there is appeal to hillary because she is probably from some proponents would say, she has been a first lady, she has been senator. no candidate has that experience and the clintons have a finnity with the black people but that's not a lock. bernie sanders brings a lot to the table in terms of people appealing to his message but at the end of the day people will base it on who do i feel comfortable with, who knows my issues and my community. and it is not a lock but i track record in the black community.
