the side of the road eight miles away. our coverage begins with jim armstrong. >> i just see the vision of driving by and i just see the child sitting there in the leaves. >> reporter: at first tom crosby thought it must be a doll but something felt so wrong he turned around. >> there it was a little child. >> reporter: he asked his wife to call 911 and he approached the 2-year-old girl. >> she looked like she might have been in a little bit of shock. she was sitting, shaking. i approached her slowly. i just noticed that she was cold and -- soy went over to -- so i went over to her. picked her up and put her in the car. >> reporter: the toddler was naked. her hair had been shaved off and she was bleeding from a massive cut on her head. you could hear in scanner traffic police immediately realized this was the little

girl reported missing from her home in hamilton early friday morning. >> this is a female. call hamilton. try to get me information on that missing child. >> reporter: yet here she was miles away faikd and a-- naked and alone in rowley. the little girl's parents put her to bed thursday night. checked on her around 4:15 was gone. investigators were moments away from launching an amber alert when she was found. >> until i know the outcome the investigation i'm going to be very concerned. >> reporter: the man who found her has never to have been more relieved to have second-guessed himself. >> it could have anyone. i guess it's an act of god or whatever it was, it was me. >> reporter: police are now questioning one of this little girl's former baby-sitters as a person of interest in connection with yesterday's terrible events here. in hamilton, jim armstrong, wbz this morning. >> the little girl's disappearance has certainly

shaken people in what's typically a very quiet neighborhood. neighbors couldn't believe it when they saw crime scene tape family's home. the family still hadn't returned as of last night but neighbors say the parents are good people. >> reporter: the home on lincoln avenue in south hamilton was quiet like it usually looks, far different from earlier in the day. a 2-year-old girl was taken from her bedroom. her parents called 911 at 7:00 in the morning. >> immediately i could just picture her trauma, her shock. just completely horrified. it's like nightmarish for me. >> reporter: once the child was found in rowley, investigators descended on the street. neighbors couldn't wrap their heads around it. they say mom is always outside playing with her two kids. >> she's with them all day long, hands on in their world. >> reporter: for them there was never a doubt in their minds the parents were innocent. the child's father returned

family says he has received subpar care behind bars. right now police are looking for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting in jamaica plain last night. it happened on weiman street. one man died and another treated at the hospital. the victims' names have not been released. the country of belgium is in lockdown and police are patrolling key intersections in brussels, the capital. there is an imminent threat. five of the terrorist attacks who died had ties to brussels. in all 130 people were killed in the paris attacks. many more are still hospitalized. >> i want to see, i want to come, i don't want to stop to live because of this. i want to be here. >> next friday france will hold a national ceremony in memory

at the same time, there's new information on the raid that took out the suspected attacks. investigators say they found a third body inside the apartment they raided on thursday. it was the largest and most intense of nearly 800 raids conducted by french police in the last week. they fired more than 5,000 bullets. new jersey governor and republican presidential candidate chris christie will little later than expected. around 10:00 p.m. last night christie's flight from california landed in boston. it was five hours late because of a security scare. united airlines says a inappropriate pictures of flight attendants and had to be removed. passengers were taken off the plane and randomly screened. christie says it was a member of his own staff that first actions. >> the most important thing was

everybody is safe and everybody got home. during the current atmosphere, we can never be too careful. >> they did have a guy at the gate that the cops were interrogating behind the desk. so i think that might be what happened. but as far as i know, they didn't tell us anything. >> reporter: what did you think when you got off and were physically searched? >> i didn't know what to think. with everything that goes on these days, i didn't really have a problem with it. >> christie has three events scheduled for today. two town hall meetings and the granite state baseball dinner. we've already seen santas and reindeer pop up in displays almost as soon as the halloween decorations came down. now a bigger sign the holidays are approaching. tonight the christmas tree at faneuil hall will be lit in a spectacular ceremony. that includes live musical light show. you might want to make a day of best option.

invited an unexpected guest in the hospital. he posed for pictures with the bride and groom. things got ugly. the groom and friend were so ugly they followed him and beat he did need stitches. the groom and his friend are now facing assault charges. but that will teach you to crash a wedding. there was an unusual guest at the ritz carlton in aspen. a great horned owl got in through the attic and found its way into the fourth floor hallway. a police officer experienced at capturing owls was called in to help. she was able to grab the bird in a blanket and calm him down. the owl was then released back into the wild. who would think an owl would be so cute. at some point every new parent has wished for more time to spend with their brand new baby.

welcome back. 5:26. facebook founder mark zuckerberg says he will take two full months of paternity leave when his wife is born. he's expecting his very first child. he shared a post on facebook saying studies show it's better when working parents spend more time with their newborns. facebook gives its employees as much as four months of paid maternity or paternity leave. good for him.

thanksgiving forecast coming up in your seven-day. terry? >> we look forward to that pamela. thank you. checking our top stories meanwhile, investigators are questioning a former baby- sitter as a person of interest in the disappearance of a 2- year-old little girl. the child disappeared early friday morning from a home in hamilton. it was found several hours later alive alongside a road in rowley. the 2-year-old was bruised and not wearing any clothes. her head had been shaved. the wife of former house speaker sal today macy says he's been diagnosed with prostrate cancer according to the globe. now she's trying again to have him freed on compassionate release. he was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2012 and his family claims the care he is getting in federal prison is not good enough. he's serving an eight-year term for corruption. the american woman who was killed in a terrorist attack in

massachusetts. adeet take datar grew up -- anita datar grew up in new jersey and was working in massachusetts. she spent time in africa as a peace corps volunteer and was a founding member of a nonprofit group dedicated to public health. she was one of more than 20 people killed when terrorists stormed a hotel in the west african nation. it finally ended when police stormed the building and freed dozens of hostages. david wade has more. >> reporter: guests a the raddisson blu hotel in mali's capital were rushed to safety after gunmen in a toyota suv can diplomatic plates blew right through a security barrier and started shooting. this hotel worker said the terrorists shot at anything that moved. other witnesses said the men shouted god is great in arabic and that they also spoke both french and english. american anita datar was among the more than two dozen people killed during the early morning assault.

>> we're devastated at the loss of our wonderful daughter who was doing the work that she loves. we have no further comment at this time and ask that you respect our privacy. >> reporter: the two gunmen were also killed. more than 100 others were held hostage. the u.s. state department said about a dozen of its employees were rescued after security forces went door to door. u.s. forces helped to evacuate some of the hostages during the seven-hour long siege. >> the terrorists began ruthlessly killing people and taking hostages. on behalf of the american people, i want to extend our deepest condolences to the people of mali and the victims' families including at least one american. >> anita datar is survived by a son, her brother and her parents. two terror groups with ties to al qaeda have claimed responsibility for the attack. the worldwide syrian refugee crisis is continuing to impact lives right here in boston. last night activists rallied outside the statehouse supporting the men, women and children fleeing syria.

they're protesting efforts to block those refugees from entering the united states. in the wake of the attacks in paris. some in congress and many governors, including charlie baker, have come out against accepting refugees. >> the u.s. is such a rich country and other poor countries in the world have -- [ inaudible ] 2,000 is nothing. >> despite his reservations, governor charlie baker is now refusing to sign a letter by other republican governors asking the president to suspend efforts to resettle syrians. a 9-year-old syrian refugee pleading with president obama to allow more people from his country into the u.s. to rebuild their lives. the little boy has already suffered emotional and physical losses beyond anything a child should have to live through. now as he tells our bill

of danvers high school two years ago. chism put the body of colleen in the barrel moments after he killed her in the restroom. she's a history teacher. chism's attorneys are using an insanity defense. the army reservist charged with stealing an -- [ inaudible ] james morales appeared in federal court in new york where he was capturing earlier this week. the f.b.i. says he stole 16 guns from an armory last weekend. surveillance video helped lead to his arrest. fantasy sports sites have been in the headlines a lot lately as you know. this morning a closer look at just how much money people spend on those sites. and it is staggering. boston-based draft kings says the industry will take in $4 billion in entry fees this year alone. draft kings released that information in court documents filed on friday in new york.

shut down the sites. earlier this week massachusetts attorney general maura healey announced a series of restrictions including banning players younger than 21. new englanders apparently prefer watching the patriot to casinos. the slot parlor sees significantly fewer visitors on game days. casino officials say they are discussing a number of promotional opportunities with the team to draw in football fans. the casino generated nearly $13 million in revenues last month. that's down from $18 million in july. the casino is located about five miles from gillette stadium in foxboro. so they've got to get a little creative i think on game days. the set celtics -- the celtics bounce back. why they had one of the best nights of the season. more when we come back. >> a cool start. clouds start to roll into the forecast and temperatures seasonable.

>> step outside that will wake you up. a refreshing start here. it's cooler, cooler temperatures than yesterday. we're running 15 to 20 degrees cooler in some spots. yesterday we did pick up some beneficial rain. 1 to 2 inches of rain ray cross the board. however, the drought monitor came out thursday morning and this is the latest update for the week so it doesn't include the rain we had from yesterday but it will definitely help. drought monitors still technically abnormal dry conditions here in boston, the cape and the islands and modes rat drought conditions back into at least the eastern part of worcester county. we'll keep you posted on that situation. more rain expected for sunday but not for today. today we keep it dry for you, even though more clouds will roll into the forecast later today. temperature wise we're 39 to start it off. light breeze from the northwest mixed in and your real feel temp is 34 degrees out there. windchill values making it feel just a little bit colder than the actual temp. 28 degrees taunton. 45 falmouth. 43 degrees chatham.

welcome back. 5:57. thursday is thanksgiving, believe it or not. so if you have a frozen turkey, you might want to start getting it ready. the folks at butter ball turkeys have advice about preparation. in the fridge, thawed turkey breast side up in a tray. and open the wrapper. you should allow at least one day for every four pounds of bird.

now, if you plan on thawing your turkey with cold water, here's the recommendation. thaw breast side down in an unopened wrapper with enough water to cover the entire bird. change the water every half- hour. got to be committed to this turkey. allow a minimum of 30 minutes per pound. it's jiblets, not giblets. you can tell i'm not cooking. we're glad you're waking up with us. look at that sky out there this morning. it's beautiful.
