and leaving her on the side of the road. good afternoon. thank you for being here with us. i'm katherine hauser. the little girl's family is speaking out about the horrifying hours their daughter went missing. we appreciate your being here this noon type. the woman they once trusted to watch their little girl now facing charges of taking the toddler in the middle of the night. our nicole jacobs is live where the baby-sitter is due in court at any moment. good afternoon, nicole. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, chris. the details of this case are unimaginable. because of the sensitivity of it all, we chose not to use the little girl's name or picture. i can tell you right now inside court family members of the suspects are waiting for their daughter to be arraigned. this of course as the family of that little girl is asking for privacy. a frightening ordeal sends shock waves through a hamilton community. a 2-year-old little girl reported missing found hours

hearing from that little girl's parents through a written statement. we have suffered a horrific ordeal it reads. daughter back. we are extremely thankful for the incredible efforts to rescue our daughter by police and all emergency responders. we are extremely grateful to daughter. we are extremely thankful for having the best family, friends, and community supporting us through this difficult time. this topsfield woman, 21-year- old abigail hanna is accused of triggering those tense moments. police say she broke into a south hamilton home and kidnapped the toddler while her parents slept. hanna is the former baby- sitter. the child was found by passersby eight miles away on the side of the road naked with her head shaved they say. >> driving by and to see the child sitting there in the leaves. >> reporter: the family's statement goes on to read: we are asking for privacy out of

respect for the young ages of our children and out of an understanding that as parents we need to be able to restore a sense of calm, comfort and normalcy to the well-being of our children. >> right now abbail hanna is in the courtroom in newburyport district court right now where she will face those charges of kidnapping and assault. and we're going to listen in right now to this proceeding. >> the motion to detail miss hanna without bail. >> your honor, at this time the defense stipulates to that motion without prejudice. i filed two additional motions with the court. one is for a competency evaluation asking the court to -- [ inaudible ] the second motion as well

>> yes, your honor, without prejudice. >> with the court's permission, i'm asking the court to testimony as to competency and asking that she be sent for evaluation [ inaudible ] [ witness sworn ] >> for the record, court psychologist for the fifth district court. i did do an evaluation of miss hanna per student to mass general laws chapter 1233, section a regarding competency. in preparation for the evaluation, i had an opportunity to speak with her parents and speak with dr. joss who conducted an interview of her over the weekend.

observe miss hanna, and to briefly interview her. i interviewed her down in the lockup of this building. most of the interview was conducted with her sitting on the floor. most of the interview was conducted with her either nodding her head or shaking her head in response to my questions. she had a barely adequate understanding of the warning. she did not -- she was unable to present a factual understanding of the charges or even understanding of where she was. it was completely logical. at the present time, your honor, she's experiencing multiple psychotic symptoms, including auditory hallucinations, auditory hall luges -- hallucinations instructing her not to speak tom. she's experiencing suicidal ideation.

it's not clear if she's intending to -- [indiscernible] she over the weekend -- over the weekend she endorsed both auditor and visual hallucinations and has a attempts. multiple memory lapses. at the present time as i said she's basically mute. she is unable to give me an adequate -- depend straight adequate understanding of the factual nature of the court system or her charges and she's demonstrating no rational ability to participate in her defense or to work with her attorney. she meets -- she is in my opinion she's not competent. it is also my opinion she'll need further evaluation at an in patient facility. i do have a bed for her at the

alleged victim in this case -- [ inaudible ] >> we need to have a return date of december 11. >> you've been watching live the arraignment of 21-year-old abigail anna who is accused of -- hanna who is accused of kidnapping a 2-year-old on friday. she's charged with assault and battery.

there was a court ordered psychologist who had done an evaluation of hanna. we heard from her step trying what she had -- stepping through what she had observed. >> basically she said hanna is showing signs of not being competent to be in court in this psychologist's opinion. she was sitting on the floor during the interview nodding and shaking her head to answers unable to give a factual account of the charges against her, where she was. she has had episodes before. >> she also talked about psychotic symptoms, hallucinations, being suicidal, that she's basically mute and has had a history of memory lapses and she's not competent at this time. earlier nicole jacobs, our reporter at the scene was talking about the victim's family releasing a statement. we also heard from hanna's family as well. we're releasing a statement earlier today which reads we wish her and her family complete healing in every way. our thoughts and prayers are with them, again referring to the victim's family.

we also will continue to care for abi whom we love very much. we'll continue to follow this story for you right here on wbz both on air and online. we will have the latest for you again tonight at 5:00. developing right now, schools and subways are shut down in belgium as fears grow over a terror attack. dozens of raids were held overnight and as craig boswell reports authorities are searching for a suspected terrorist who escaped after the paris attacks. >> reporter: brussels is on lockdown. heavily armed soldiers are patrolling the streets trying to prevent a paris style attack in the belgium capital. many businesses are closed. downtown streets are nearly empty. overnight security forces carried out more than a dozen raids across belgium. at least 21 people were arrested but the prime suspect in the paris attacks is not one of them. >> saleh abdeslam is not among

terror suspect and the fight against islamic militants tops the agenda when president obama and french president francois white house. hollande was with britain's prime minister today in paris. they laid flowers at the bataclan nightclub where # 9 people lost -- 89 people lost their lives. >> we'll do all in our power to defeat this evil death cult. >> reporter: cameron will ask his parliament to approve air strikes against isis in syria. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. today an investigation assured way into an overnight fire at a paxton animal shelter. 30 cats and at least 12 dogs died in the flames on pleasant street. by the time firefighters got there, the fire had engulfed the building. five dogs were rescued by crews. >> we're very fortunate to save just those. if you looked at the site, it was fully involved when we got here.

to save any of the animals. that was our first goal to do that. >> the animals are now being taken care of. the building, though, is a total loss. jurors are seeing more chilling evidence in the murder case against danvers teenager philip chris him. -- chism. they saw surveillance video of chism walking the halls. prosecutors say chism used to be -- used a cycling bin to dump the body. his hands and clothes covered in blood. after the murder there is more surveillance video of chism buying a movie ticket at a nearby theater using the teacher's credit card. he's using an insanity defense. the case will resume next monday. a new leader in the new hampshire presidential race and he's not even running. a new "boston globe" poll shows

case, he'd beat trup strum 2-1 in -- donald trump in 2-1 in the granite state. he missed friday's deadline to get on the ballot there. the pats will take on the bills tonight and you can expect to see stepped up security at gillette stadium. this is the first home game for the patriots following the paris attacks. the n.f.l. has said security will be extra tight and a clear bag policy will be in effect. that policy also applies to those taking the commuter rail to the game as well. on the field it's sure to abshowdown. >> the pats are undefeated but we'll -- they'll be without some of their big games. the pats are looking to go 10- on but rex ryan's buffalo team stands in their way. when they last met up in week two, the pats scored 40 points but the bills ran 160 yards thanks to carlos williams. the patriots kick off tonight at 8:30. after the game we'll have it all covered for you. tune into patriots 5th quarter on my tv38.

welcome back. if you are planning on flying this holiday, you better pack your patience. >> travelers are waiting longer to get into the friendly skies. the associated press finds on average flights spend 23 minutes taxiing between gates, the toughest part of the flight. that's the most time taxiing since they began tracking that data. good news if you're driving this thanksgiving. the gas prices are lower this holiday season.
