it's the afternoon commute that's really ugly. you can see already heavy volume for this time of morning northbound side. we're not hearing about any backups right now. the rest of the major routes are coming up from the south. let's take a quick look at the north map. 93 southbound at this time is usually a little busier in the andover and medford stretches. route 1 from peabody looks good. no issues on 128 or 495. chris, kathryn? a warning for americans across the world on the busiest travel time of the year. it come as mid concerns that terror groups are planning more attacks. >> the state department is advising americans here at home and all over the world to avoid large crowds. susie steimle has a closer look at the warning. susie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn and chris. 47 million americans are preparing to travel over the next couple of weeks, and with terrorism threats

internationally at an unpress dented level, you can expect an additional screening at airports and security at large public gatherings. >> it's both of our fist time going out of the country. >> reporter: these sisters have been traveling their two-week european travel adventure for a lifetime. as they headed to logan airport late monday night, the state department issued a worldwide travel alert from now through february. u.s. citizens are told to exercise extra precautions. >> i'm definitely going to be vigilant. >> reporter: in our nation's 500 airports, security will be increased. also expect additional ticket screenings from tsa workers. >> our airport security is not designed to catch somebody right as they are getting on the aircraft. it is designed to start checking people as soon as they look for that ticket. >> reporter: most americans will keep their eyes open but

the city plans to release video showing a teenager being six 16 times bree is here with the latest. good morning, dee. >> reporter: good morning. officer van dike will be charged with murder. a source close to the investigation tells our sister station in chicago. the 14-year veteran of the force was trying to stop la kwon mcdonald who was shot 16 times. the city rejected several freedom of information requests. police superintendent gary mccarriagery are prepared for possible violent protests. the mayor vows to hold the officer accountable. >> this officer didn't uphold the law, and wasn't about

so at every point, he violated what we entrusted him with. >> the mcdonald family reached a $5 million settlement. their attorney says they have no interest in seeing the dash cam video and do not want it released to the public. five people in the hospital after being shot during a rally in minneapolis. the crowd was protesting a police-involved shooting earlier this month that left a black man debt. three white supremacists showed up. they were asked to leave but returned opening fire on the crowd. the baby-sitter accused of kidnapping and hurting a 2- year-old from hamilton is now undergoing a mental health evaluation to see if she's competent to stand trial. abigail hannah appeared confused and disheveled in court yesterday. doctors say she's hallucinating and suicidal.

missing. when officers questioned her, she was erratic, crying on and off. a tenant in her home says she had a miscarriage a month before and had a habit of stealing things. the family wouldn't talk but a family friend did. >> we're praying for all involved. >> the albers family used the sitter once before they fired her. a trooper was outside directing traffic on route 1 when he was hit by a drink driver. the trooper was alert and take ton norwood hospital. no word on the extent of his injuries. a date is now set for the nfl's deflate gate appeal. the appeal is march 3rd, a month after super bowl l. that's key because it won't affect tom brady's ability to play in the postseason. patriots nation waking up

nicole jacobs is live for us in milton with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. if you don't like sitting in traffic, today may be the day you sit at home. if past tuesdays the day before thanksgiving is any indication, we nobody for even worse bottlenecks than -- we could be in for even wes bottlenecks in the past. when you think of boston traffic this most likely comes milesp. >> reporter: there's too many cars in the city for one thing. >> reporter: now getting national attention with boston having 3 of 50 worst bottlenecks in the country. topping the list, i-93 from the mass pike to route 1 amounts to more than 2 million hours of wasted time and hits the worth. >> it's just all jammed up and i feel like it's always

windchill is 22 degrees in boston. it is 11 degrees in worcester. so you want to be bundled up. make sure the kids have the heavy winter coat on as well. grab the shades, too. the sun will be shining. we have snow to our west. the sign of the season, right? it's lake effect snow showers. we'll get clouds that mix in at times today. other than that, our quiet stretch continues here. high pressure will be the dominant feature on the map the next couple of days. tomorrow travel weather looks fantastic across the region anywhere in new england down through the mid-atlantic and a okay. the only exception will be the pacific northwest. thanksgiving morning, we get a wind out of the south, typically a warm wind direction. we'll see a warming trend on thanksgiving day. there will be stubborn low- level clouds but no moisture from those. it's friday night that we await the arrival of the cold front.

there will be rain shower for us this time around and will lose steam as it comes toward us friday into saturday. otherwise it is a dry stretch. overnight tonight, the wind goes calm. so i do think we'll have scattered frost overnight tonight. you may need an extra minute or two to scrape the windshields high temperatures tomorrow come into the mid-40s. the wind won't be strong. the sun is going to be straining so it does look like a beautiful wednesday. thursday, mid-50s for our thanksgiving with sun and clouds. the wind out of the south will be a little breezy in the afternoon. 60 to end the week with increasing clouds. could be a shower friday night into early on saturday. temperatures will fall through the 40s on saturday afternoon. that's another round of cold air that comes in. we'll only be around 40 fortuned.

you are sluggish between logan and the split. chris, kathryn? >> all right, robi. thank you very much. a pause in the philip chism murder trial. proceedings will resume after thanksgiving. the victim's mother broke down in court yesterday when prosecutors presented bloody clothing. they say chism was wearing this and showed surveillance images hours after the crime showing him buying a movie ticket with colleen ritzer's credit card and another showing him pulling her body inside of a recycling bin. dozens in jamaica plain waking up in a shelter this morning after a water pipe burst. crews had to cut power, forcing the evacuation. mbta buses kept the residents warm. the stop & shop nearby lost power, too, and food in the freezers is thawing out. the deadline is set and the mbta is banning ads on political issues.

or other terror groups like al qaeda could be planning more attacks in the world. he warns americans to be careful when using public transportation or attending public events with large crowds. a baby-sitter accused of kidnapping and hurting a 2- year-old from hamilton is being held without bail. 20-year-old abigail hannah is hallucinating and suicidal. police questioned a tentant of her parents' home who said hannah had a history of stealing things and had a miscarriage the month before that. hundreds come to show their support for a paxton animal shelter that burned to the ground. of animals lost. some brought food and money to running. 39 cats and 13 dogs died when the sweet pea animal shelter went up in flames sunday night. when firefighters got there, they weren't sure if they could save any animals. survived.

the animal shelter wants to rebuild. donors are already planning fund-raisers. the people at brandeis university remembering a sharon teen killed in a terrorist attack if the west bank. dozens gathered outside of the school and they want to raise israel. the 18-year-old was killed last week. the patriots also paying tribute to the team during last night's game. they held a moment of silence for all of those who lost their lives in recent terror attacks but especially to the sharon native who was a heche patriots fan. most people think tomorrow is the busiest travel day but it seems times have changed. >> robi just mentioned this, this morning. john keller takes a closer look at why bostonians have a different travel strategy. >> reporter: good morning. if you are a regular thanksgiving weekend traveler, you already know what a new survey confirms.

become the worst traffic day of the holiday exodus. why? we are a net departure city with more people leaving than coming in. a lot of us are students or folks with flexible work schedules who can get away a day early. then again, combine with anecdotal evidence that the big boston exodus comes early on other holiday weekends as well, perhaps it shows we are the national capital of the early slide from work. this is not good news if you get stuck in a tuesday traffic jam, but it does have its advantages. black friday traffic in the boston area tends to be left onerous than other cities because so many people have cleared out of town. for those of us staying put who have errands to run on wednesday shall the early exodus is a blessing. in any case, traffic may be worse than ever around here, holiday or no, but being stuck in traffic just isn't as bad as it used to be between built-in video players, ipods and

a high school senior in besten, you guys, is doing all she can to keep her classmates warm this winter. kelsey king set up drop boxes to collect slightly worn coats, hats, and gloves. the response was huge. more than 11 00 items were donated. king is the captain of the school's track team and says she is doing her part. we've seen so many stories like this you guys, of giving back. i love it. >> i'm always amazed at how one person can make such a difference. >> really important thing, too, as we go into the wintertime.

for us, quiet weather today. quiet for any traveling tomorrow as well. all across new england down through the mid-atlantic. a lot of the eastern seaboard is just fine. thanksgiving morning, not too cold. so it's not going to be like this morning. we get a wind out of the south. typically warmer wind directions. we get low-level moisture that comes in, in the form of clouds on thanksgiving. some of them may be stubborn particularly across the interior. so don't expect bright sunshine thanksgiving day but expect temperatures in the 50s on thursday afternoon. we're waiting on a front to bring back the cooler air. today's highs, look at this. temperatures in the low to mid- 40s. the wind is not as strong as yesterday. 40 in jaffrey. mid-40s here in fitch. so definitely a chill to the air. tonight clear and frosty.

eight people at gunpoint in a cat fishing scheme is behind bars. he lured his victims by posing as a woman looking for a date online. woe set up a date. austin has a long krim record. he was identified in part because of a gps ankle bratlet. a chicago police officer expected to face charges for shooting 17-year-old la kwon mcdonald 16 times. authorities are now bracing for possible violent appropriate tests now that the video of the shooting is being made public. the search is on in massachusetts and new york for the seven remaining high- powered weapons stolen from a worcester armory. so far, police and the fbi recovered 9 of the 16 weapons. a homeless man in new york city found some of them in a park
