stepping up security at the planned parenthood on commonwealth avenue. that suspect is alive and in custody and bomb technicians are sweeping the building and the parking lot there for possible explosions. >> we just learned the name of the police officer who was killed. 44-year-old garrett swasey. he wored for the university of colorado colorado springs police department. >> reporter: boston police have been keeping close watch all of planned parenthood. this is in response to the carnage in colorado springs. >> multiple shots fired, building. >> reporter: the gunfire turned the area in and around the clinic into a war zone. police taking gunfire from a officers hit. 11 people were taken to the hospital, including five

investigators. it went on for hours and early friday night a breakthrough. >> we did get officers inside of the building at the planned parenthood and the officers were able to shout to the suspect and make communication with him and at that point they were able to get him to surrender and he was taken into custody. >> reporter: terrified people at the clinic and a nearby shopping center were told to shelter in place. one man was speaking to his sister over the phone. >> she said guys were shooting. >> reporter: did she see him? >> yeah. she was hiding. >> reporter: in boston police stepped up patrols in front of the planned parenthood as a precaution. the local organization president saying, our top priority is the situation of our meants and staff. our hearts go out to everyone involved. here in massachusetts and across the country, planned parenthood has strong security measures in place, works

agencies and has a very strong safety record. once again tonight boston police on added patrols here at the local office of planned parenthood. a police spokesman telling me it's a precaution and added security is open-ended at this point. thank you. boston police confirm they are investigating this fight allegedly involving 76er's player jahil okafor. it appears to show him punching the man who is now filing a police report. katie brace live outside the club where witnesses say they saw it play out there. >> reporter: boston police are investigating because the complaint was filed today. the accuser says the nba star assaulted him right here across from the club. the basketball player tonight

video posted on tmz appears to show 76ers basketball player jahil okafor going after a man and again after someone else restrains him. the street fight was around 2:00 thanksgiving morning. 76ers just lost to the celtics, giving the team the worst record in the league. okafor says he was being heckled and regrets his actions. >> i'm in the spotlight and i know people are like that and i'll never handle it light that again. >> reporter: the police report filed by the accuser says his okafor's advances. the report says okafor hit the man with a closed fist, causing a cut requiring stitches. boston fans heard about the fight. >> they should be trained and taught, but at the same time he is an adult. and he shouldn't be given special favor.

there will be showers coming our way. looks like we'll get those tomorrow. i'll give you the time line when they get out of here and how cold it might be here next week. thank you. tonight a father is grieving after his son is shot to death. he was apparently an innocent bystander when he was killed yesterday near a popular fenway bar. investigators say it was around 2:00 in the morning. he was about to celebrate his 30th birthday. his father said his son had a heart of gold and a smile everyone loved. >> [inaudible] -- because my son, my best friend, my best friend d. >> police are calling the attack brazen. they found a gun and shell casings at the scene. no arrests have been made, but police say it's possible cherry was an innocent bystander. local firefighters are giving thanks for the recovery

it had been missing for months. it is an item with great sentimental value. >> reporter: it's a well known symbol of good will in a high traffic area of boston. >> fire houses across the city collect yearly for muscular dystrophy and typically downtown they see the boot out front and people know drop something in the boot. >> reporter: last may this fire house got a taste of ill will when the boot and donations were stolen. fast forward to today, a glimmer of good news. >> responded to a fire in the tunnel. >> reporter: there it was, the tattered boot sliced in two, complete with its metal box. >> couldn't believe it. dumbfounded i would say. >> reporter: beyond the charity, this boot has special meaning for engine company, it

raised money for two firefighters who died fighting a blaze in 2014. the metal box, a portion of the bumper from ladder 2 where kennedy worked. the fire commissioner says the spirit of the boot not dimmed by one incident. >> if they went in and asked the firefighter, probably would have gave it to them. someone swiping a collection jar meant for the jimmy fund and helping kids with cancer. tonight a suspect is under arrest. norwood police released this video of the crime yesterday. they were hoping to get tips from it and they did. the 4 4-year-old's mother told him to come forward and he did.

we have this heart stopping video out of connecticut. troopers investigating an accident on i-95 this morning when that horrific crash. the driver of the speeding and out of control car almost hitting everyone pulled off to the side there. the driver suffered minor injuries. no one else was hurt. state police say this is a good reminder to always move over a lane for stopped emergency vehicles. that takes us to the number of the night. traffic related incidents are the second leading cause of police deaths in 2014, killing 49 officers.

the national law enforcement memorial fund says nine officers specifically were struck and killed outside their vehicles last year. here is a sign of the season. macy's holding the annual downtown crossing tree lighting. boston's mayor, santa claus on hand for the ceremony. the tree stands 46 feet tall and there are more than 10,000 lights. we moved past thanksgiving. hanukkah is december 6th, christmas is coming up. but it doesn't feel like the season. >> maybe why we need all the signs to prove to us it is almost december. >> last december it was warm as well. 64 today.

boston south tomorrow morning. it will fall into the middle 40s to the north. upper 40s to the south during the afternoon, as this front comes down and triggers a batch of rain. looks like it's mostly going to be on the light side, but there could be a few places where it comes down harder at times. nothing really categorized as heavy rain. much of the time there will be a little bit of light rain around. certainly won't be sunshine. but we should have it on sunday, even though cloudiness goes by sunday morning, it should sink away and the rest of sunday should be fine. another front coming down from northern new england snow mountains. cold air coming in from the maritimes may bring banks of monday morning.
