seriously injured. it's possible the number of fatalities could grow over the next couple of hours. those with injuries are being treated at nearby hospitals as we speak. the shooters are all still at large as far as we know right now. the description of them is limited at this time. police to talk to us a few minutes ago. they told us that while the shooters are still at large, they know they were wearing military style gear. we are hoping to hear more in a couple of minutes. back to you. >> they said that these three gunmen came prepared. those were the words from the police chief in san bernardino, california. we want to get out to the scene, an active scene even at this hour. danielle nottingham is live with the latest. >> reporter: authorities are asking the public to be on high alert. this is still a very active scene as police search for three suspects who are dressed in all black and fled

emergency responders scramble to treat multiple victims after gunfire broke out at inland regional center 60 miles east of los angeles. >> we have preliminary numbers, uppers of 14 people are dead and uppers of 14 people that are injured. >> reporter: the social services facility serves people with development of disabilities in many people reported seeing three people who are entered the facility and -- who entered the facility and opened fire. >> they appeared to be prepared. they had long guns, not handguns.>> reporter: debbie's daughter was in the building. >> she texted me and said she was called and that they were pretending to be dead because these guys were still out there. >> reporter: president. obama sent his condolences to the victims and once again calls for tougher gun laws. >> we do not yet know what the

is that there are steps we can make to make americans safer. >> reporter: police don't know whether the shooting is related to terrorism. the number of injured and fatalities could change according to police. there were hundreds of other employees inside the center who were not harmed. live in san bernardino, california, daniel nottingham. back to you. >> for police officers there, as they are continuing to make sure everyone is out of the area, what is the message going to people throughout the area with these three gunmen still on the loose? >> they are telling people to stay inside. stay out -- stay at home. don't go outside if you don't have to. city and county buildings were on lockdown for a while today. this is also close to the public or co-they are telling people to be cautious -- public where we are. they are telling people to be cautious. this is still a dangerous situation.

on -- boston marathon bodies, there were so many incidents and surrounding cities where people were having reports a possibly seeing suspects and things like that. are you hearing anything like that another city surrounding san bernardino? police are certainly on high alert. >> -- >> reporter: of course, they could've gone anywhere. they were seen in an suv. p are -- people are on high alert. this is a city of two--- 200,000 people, 60 miles outside of los angeles. this is heavily populated. that's why authorities want everyone to be on alert. >> danielle nottingham live on the scene. we appreciate it. the troopers and the commonwealth center here in massachusetts will be monitoring .

whether there is any type of [ indiscernible ] of terrorism, they will disseminate this information to all law enforcement agencies in massachusetts. i spoke to former police commissioner ed davis about why the attackers might have targeted this particular facility. >> unfortunately, this is a -- an example of a soft target, a business facility that has hundreds if not thousands of people inside of it. this is like places throughout the united states. this is particularly problematic for the police to find out who the bad guy is if he happens to drop his weapon and walk away. the other thing is there's usually a labyrinth of hallways and doorways and rooms that the officers on familiar with.

carolina when a gunman opened fire on a prayer group at a south carolina church. days ago another active shooter situation at eight planned parenthood -- at a planned parenthood in colorado springs in which three people were killed including garrett swasey who is a melrose native. the most recent shooting here was just near fenway park. it doesn't just seem like these are happening more often, they actually are. the frequency of mass shootings has tripled in the last 4 years. >> thank you. president. obama has been visibly frustrated and even angry at the news of all of these shootings. >> cbs's norah o'donnell does actually sitting down for an interview with the president when the news of this shooting broke. >> mr. president, it assumes -- it appears there has been

california. >> we don't know that much at. the fbi is on the ground and offering assistance to local officials as needed. it does appear that there are going to be some casualties. obviously, our hearts go out to the victims and families. the one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. there are some steps we can take to eliminate -- not to illuminate every one of these mass shootings, but to improve the odds that they don't have an as frequently -- happen as frequently. we need stronger gun safety laws, background checks. for those concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list for people who cannot get on planes with though some people that we

into a store right now in the u.s. and by a firearm and there is nothing we can do to stop them. that is a law that needs to be changed. my hope is that we are able to contain this particular shooting and we don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are. what we do know is that there are steps we can take to make americans safer and that we should come together in a bipartisan way at every level of government to make these rare as opposed to normal. we should never think that this is something that just happens in the ordinary course of events because it doesn't happen with the same frequency in other countries. >> wbz political analyst jim keller -- jon keller joins us now. what do you say? >> here we go again.

of seeing this happen and the feelings of fear and distress over the humanity involved. once again, the debate as the president indicated over what over all, violent crime has the last decade. but not mass gun violence has ryan kath just pointed out. we are awash in guns as a culture find their way into the wrong hands. where we definitely do not agree is over what to do about it. let me give you a little bit of broader context to drive home this point. we just passed the second answer a series -- anniversary of the washington naval yard shooting. do you remember that one? a former military officer with mental illness broke into the navy yard and killed a number of people. his name was aaron

highlands -- of violence. he had previous contact with the law. he even had a documented history of negligence involving a firearm but current background check laws would not apply to him because he had not integrate by a court to be mentally incompetent andy wasn't he had a security clearance that had escaped detection because of the poor communication. that gives you an idea of the complexity of the problem. advocates for a gun-control today were lobbying to lift a restriction barring the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta from studying gun violence and gun trafficking, just studying it, to try to get better data and come up with some solutions. efforts to lift the ban after the sandy hook massacre ran

when the democrats controlled both branches of the legislature , that couldn't pass. this frustrating tangle has affected the country. as you heard president. obama say, why are people that are on the no-fly list allowed to buy a gun. a viewer reminds me that at one point a few years back the late senator. ted kennedy popped up on the no-fly list. all sorts of people end up on the no-fly list who aren't in any way, shape or form proven to be dangerous or terrorists. do step in and it denying them their rights, their access to purchasing a firearm because they are on the fly -- no-fly list? that shows you what -- dust out of of an issue this is. -- jost how top of an issue

perhaps police trying to chase down ankle suv -- an suv. many witnesses described people suddenly left this area street. now we have a secondary location you can see officers on a sidewalk, some ducking down behind poles or fences. others are taking cover behind a truck. we don't know what is happening here other than a second scene has sprung up and we are not perfectly clear whether or not it is related to the first scene. >> these officers clearly are at the ready. i believe if you look at the windows of this vehicle, they appear to be shot out. they -- eyewitnesses said they saw up

colored suv. that is what san bernardino police described in a news conference. this was a couple of hours ago. now we have live 4 from this fellow -- helicopter camera of the scene where the s.w.a.t. team officers and other officers are in a neighborhood in that appears to be a dark colored suv . they are stopped at the side of the road with the windows shut out. we don't know what is transpiring here or who might be in the car but this is the kind of act of situation we have been watching for hours. there is a s.w.a.t. team on the sweet -- on the street. this is one of the reasons why a no -- why in all clear has not been given. they are on high alert. >> kcb sr sister station in california are reporting that police are responding to a possible barricade situation in the area. as you said paula, you can see
