wife 27-year-old tashfeen malik killed 14 people and injured almost two dozen others at a holiday party thrown by farook's employer. >> nobody just gets upset at a party, goes home and puts together that kind of an elaborate scheme or plan to come back and do that. so there was some planning that went into this. >> reporter: part of their plan involved three pipe bombs tied to a remote control car. none exploded. the couple was armed with four legally purchased guns police say. >> the suspects when they entered fired somewhere between 65 and 75 rounds from their rifles a the scene. >> reporter: later the couple fired dozens more rounds during their fatal shootout with police. a tip led investigators to a home here on this block in redlands where police say they found an even bigger arsenal. >> there were 12 pipe bomb type devices found. there were another 2,000- millimeter rounds found at that house.

watch list. this morning president obama renewed his call for action. >> basic steps that would make it harder, not impossible, but harder for individuals to get access to weapons. >> reporter: authorities will begin releasing the names of the victims today. danielle nottingham, cbs news, redlands, california. >> late this afternoon we did learn that one of the survivors is a native of new hampshire. 32-year-old amanda gasperg works for the san bernardino county health department and was overseeing the holiday party there yesterday. she has undergone surgery and is expected to recover. now syed farook had worked for years. he was an inspector responsible for checking restaurants, bakeries and public pool. illinois. pakistan.

household court records show. his mother often attacked her and fought with i -- his father with his sons. his wife came to america from saudi arabia, though we're not sure that's where she's from original pale. authorities say the guns use -- originally. authorities say the guns used were bought legally. each state's gun laws are graded. arizona, nevada, an f and oregon a d minus. massachusetts gets an a, but new hampshire a d minus, vermont and maine an f. it's interesting to note mass shootings actually seem to spur an increase in gun sales.

processed more than 185,000 background checks. that's about two per second. 15 years ago seven people were killed by a man named michael mcdermott in a workplace. a lot has changed since then. beth germano is live in wakefield with more on. this. >> reporter: david, it is a shooting that has certainly left its mark on community. now homeland security calls it best practices lessons learned and that's what police are continually doing years later with their training, equipment and response. >> the mental connection of going back to that scene, what did i do right and wrong? >> reporter: the images of san bernardino took retired wakefield police chief steven dougherty back 15 years to edgewater where he responded to a mass shooting and the questions today. >> what equipment do you bring into the incident?

you go with what you got. >> reporter: that day it was dougherty and three other officers who entered and the found the gunman michael mcdermott seated in the lobby, seven co-workers shot and killed. a regional tactical team would be needed to 7 the rest of the victim for any -- search the rest of the building for any other victims. >> the thought was hold the fort and wait for the tactical units to come. that is changed. >> reporter: tactical training is now done for all officers making those who respond to shots fired faster and the police better equipped. >> we're going in and we'll call for the tackle team, but if someone is in there, our mission and job is to save lives. >> reporter: only columbine the year before had begun to raise awareness of mass shootings. now the chief and smith both provide training for law enforcement and businesses,

little bit about some of the people who were killed tonight on the cbs evening nude. they were managers, many of them, at the san bernardino county department of public health which is why farook was also employed. some of this has to do with just workplace violence, but there's also a lot of concern with what he and his wife were up to with at least 13 bombs which have been built that were founder at their home and the site of the shooting. >> we'll have all that coming right up at 6:30. thank you, scott. across the country newspaper's front pages showed the horror of what happened and some say one newspaper went too far. at some point this headline was changed to read muslim kill earls. members of the muslim community -- killers.
