the 20s. good news. milder air is on the way. later today temperatures will be in the 50s and we could be pushing the 60-degree mark for sunday. 40 degrees in boston. 26 to start off in fitchburg. 30 degrees in worcester. heavy winter coat needed as you head out the door. the satellite will show completely clear sky overhead. some planets visible next to the moon. i'll have details on that and the alignment going o. the starry -- going on. the starry night for you. temperatures close to 50 degrees this afternoon for a lot of spots. most of the day we'll spend in the upper 40s here in boston but no complaints from us. we'll be anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmer than average. the warming trend continues into sunday. the dry stretch also continues. i need more coffee. i'm not that awake. a dry stretch coming up.

tracking a bit of an ocean storm. i'll have the latest track on that in just a bit. we do begin with a developing story. investigators shut down a ups storing facility for several hours because of a package addressed to the home of the two san bernardino shooting suspects. the bomb squad determined the package was safe containing only clothing. the ups facility is a few blocks away from the scene of wednesday's tragic mass shooting. for employees it was a frightening few hours. >> they want to make sure that it's not a bomb. first of all they evacuated us and told us -- it could take anywhere between one and four hours before the bomb squad gets here. >> it's just erie, you know. it just happened and, you know, it hit so close. it's just scary. >> again, the bomb squad has determined the package was harpless. the police chief -- harmless. the police chief said they were

caution and credits the ups driver for reporting it. we're getting our first look the at woman who killed 14 people with her husband. even though they know their face, there are frustratingly few details about tashfeen malik and the life she led. this morning the f.b.i. is investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism. malik and her husband syed farook killed 14 people at a holiday party before police gunned them down in a shootout. investigators say tashfeen malik had pledged her allegiance to isis and we're getting an inside look at the killer's home where they lived with their baby and stored an arsenal of weapons. the pipe bombs found in the apartment are nearly identical to the ones the tsarnaev brothers had in boston. our team coverage begins this morning with jim armstrong. >> we're now investigating this as an act of terrorism. >> reporter: early friday the announcement many had anticipated. the san bernardino mass shooting that killed 14 and

the husband and wife responsible linked to isis. wednesday morning just as the attack was under way, tashfeen malik, the wife of gunman syed farook, wrote a post on facebook pledging her allegiance to isis leader. the post was in english but issued under a difference name. hours later the couple shot dead in a firefight with police. inside their suv veggors found more -- investigators found more weapons and ammunition. according to police, farook bought these handguns, the semiautomatic rifles were purchased by someone else. >> there is a person that we know of their location that purchased those weapons. the person is not under arrest at this point. >> reporter: reporters later allowed into the couple's apartment after investigators had very moved a lot of evidence, including computers, thumb drives and other electronic media. most important two cell phones found in a garbage dumpster.

we have retained those cell phones and we do continue to exploit the data from those cell phones. >> reporter: also inside the home, more weapons, 12 pipe bombs and equipment to make still more. cbs news has learned the couple built their pipe bombs using this al qaeda magazine as a guide. the article how to build a bomb in the kitchen of your mom is the same one used by the tsarnaev brothers to build their pipe bombs explaining why the devices look nearly identical. this as lawyers for the couple's surviving families say there's no proof the two had extremist views. >> if the most evidence there is to any affiliation is a facebook account under another person's name that supposedly just visited some site, then that's hardly anything at all. >> lawyers for the family also say farook's mother lived with the couple but she stayed upstairs. and that's why lawyers say she never noticed the bombs and

stockpiling in that house. armstrong, wbz this morning. the city of san bernardino is mourning the 14 people killed as more details about their lives are reveried. kate merrill has a lower look. >> reporter: at a growing memorial near the building where so many were killed and wounded, residents of san bernardino have been leaving messages, flower, candles and tears. >> we ask that you set the free. >> reporter: raphael sandez is struggling with a question impossible to answer. >> how could somebody with a 6- month-old child have so much fate. badal mourned a -- [indiscernible] >> is he supported me with my everybody on twitter is contacting me saying how sorry they are.

>> reporter: another of the victims, michael wetzel had six children. most were with him at church last sunday. >> this is charlie in the nutcracker next week. >> reporter: six children now without a father and a community trying to bear the pain. >> this is really about the community. >> it is. >> how it struck the community. >> it is. it's really, really bad. >> the messages left at the memorial are heartfelt offering prayers and condolences. there is one note that says simply "this must end." among the 21 people wounded in the shootings was a new hampshire native, amanda gaspar was shot in the leg. the 32-year-old was in charge of the holiday party at the social services center when the shooting started. we spoke with her pastor who knows the family well. >> i guess that's my concern

ramifications, not just the physical injury but certainly the emotional impact it will have on her moving forward. you hear of all these events, whether down in connecticut or elsewhere in the country and all of a sudden it's one of ours that got hit, it's probably the first time at least for me we've had a face with an event like this. >> amanda's sister told us she's one. the strongest people i know and has incredible faith in god. we know she'll get through this. she also said amanda the first responders, paramedics and police officers who helped her and the victims. side in california. the developments in what is fast moving. we'll have another update in our next half-hour and stay with the cbs news and wbz both on air and online throughout the day. meanwhile in the city of boston, a scare downtown was only heightened by the

this is the the first video of the man arrested in a bomb hoax. police say he left the suitcase next to a homeland security vehicle. >> reporter: is there anything you'd like to say to the people of boston? james derepentigny said nothing as officers led him away. a lawrence police officer arrested him shortly after the surveillance picture was made public. >> about 5, 10 minutes later we received a 911 call that someone had seen the subject in the area. >> reporter: in the morning the bomb squad and s.w.a.t. team shut down the district because of this suitcase. >> they x-rayed it and seen some components and wires inside and a power source. they took a step back. we got our robot in there. >> reporter: investigators blew up the suitcase and found it was harmless. she still wanted to talk to the man seen on video about his intentions. officer harold rogers responded

late in the night outside the home where four people died in a fire. this morning investigators are searching for clues into what caused it. the tragedy would have been even greater if not for the daring rescue of the firefighters and the heroics of others. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: neighbors screamed and watched in horror as fire family home. people on the first floor thankful they lived to talk about it. >> my friend, he was screaming fire, fire. then he was knocking on my door. we all got out. >> reporter: on the third floor another family barely escaped. >> we couldn't see anything. i don't know how we just got out. >> let them through. let them through. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived, they pulled two more people to safety as flames shot from the house. >> i've been a firefighter in lynn for 32 years. it was one of the most spectacular rescues i've seen.

shortly after the fire started to come forward. in lynn, wbz this morning. more trouble for convicted killer aaron hernandez. sources tell us prison fishes found a homemade knife in his jail cell. hernandez has been moved to a segregated unit at the prison in shirley. the former new england patriot is serving a life sentence for murder. he faces double murder charges in boston next month. this morning "the new york times" is taking a dramatic step in the aftermath of the deadly mass shootings in colorado springs and san bernardino, california. the paper is using space on its front page today for an editorial calling for greater gun regulation. it's the first time an editorial has appeared on page one since 1920. the publisher says the piece is meant to deliver a strong and visible statement about, quote, the source of guns. the editorial board writes in part, it is a moral outrage and

civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency. and it goes on to say the attention and anger of americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher peep yum on the money -- premium on the money and the political power of an industry dedicated to profiting from the unfettered spread of even more powerful firearms. the piece urges politicians and voters to take a stand in the next election. meanwhile republican presidential hopeful ted cruz says the best way to prevent mass shootings that have become all too frequent is by arming american civilians. he delivered that message from gun shop in iowa yesterday. >> so folks in the media think you should not be discussing second amy rights in the wake of -- amend rights in the wake of a terror attack. you don't stop bad guys by taking away our guns. you stop bad guys by using our guns. used in the san bernardino shootings on wednesday were purchased legally. patrons attending a well known art exhibit in florida thought a stabbing was all part of the show. last night at the art exhibit in miami beach, a fight broke out with one woman stabbing another. some at first believed the attack was a performance, art with fake blood. others thought police cordoning off the area with tape was an installation. the suspect was arrested. the victim suffered nonlife threatening wounds. another blow to the parrishers holding vigil inside a scituate church. the archdiocese ordered the church closed 11 years ago. since that time the faithful have maintained a constant presence inside. late yesterday the supreme judicial court said it would not reveal a supreme court ruling in the case. that ruling could force the parishioners to go. patriots need good news

>> reporter: this year christmas came early for kylie in an unusual way. >> i'm going to show you where my elf is. >> reporter: thanks to her elf and this little fourth grader's big heart. kylie wrote to her elf on the shelf a letter for him to give to santa claus saying the most helpful thing in the world would be to get $500 or $600 to donate to boston's children's hospital and the toys for children. >> not a lot of people get christmas gifts on christmas so i thought to donate money to them would help them a lot. >> reporter: her mother was so impressed by her daughter's generous heart that she started a gofundme page called kylie's gift of giving and the donations keep pouring in. >> unbelievable the response we've been getting and the generosity that people are sharing to this gofundme page. >> at first my goal was $600. now that in one day it was over $1,000, i was like i need to
