desperately fought extradition, but, in fall of 2014, she was forced to leave her australian paradise behind and return to the place where it all began, here in charleston. but this time she would be at the federal courthouse, charged with international parental kidnapping and two counts of passport fraud, crimes that could put lee behind bars for 23 years. lee was denied bail while awaiting trial. prosecutor nathan williams: >> it's not complicated. you can't take the law into your own hands and... and flee the you don't like the result from a divorce hearing. >> reporter: lee acknowledges she broke the law by getting those fake passports, but says she is not guilty of kidnapping. the law by taking her out of the country? >> no, the law was broken when a corrupt court system took that baby from me and took her mother away from her. >> reporter: in your mind, you

>> she's my daughter. >> reporter: but you did not have the legal right to take her out of the country. >> legal right be damned. >> reporter: but after five months in jail, lee realized she didn't have the money or the firepower to fight the u.s. government. she pled guilty to all three charges, including kidnapping. she was sentenced to 21 months in prison, with credit for time served. for the man who had searched for her, it was a disappointing sentence. >> what about harris' side, the father's side? she took the law in her own hands and denied the father of 20 years of ever seeing his daughter. >> reporter: have you ever, for one moment, thought, "maybe i should have let her know harris todd?" >> no. >> reporter: no remorse about cheating him out of 20 years with his daughter? >> none. >> reporter: lee says time has proven she was not who harris said she was.

they met at harris' home. >> he held out his hand to shake my hand, and i thought, "well, i'm not quite comfortable with that. i'd rather give a hug." and it was just a surreal experience, almost. >> reporter: sam says harris took her on a 2.5-hour tour of his house, showing off his prized possessions. lee's friend, retired judge myron johnson, accompanied sam. >> i really was very shocked that the conversation was not about he and samantha and the years that they have missed, and how they could go from here... >> i think we were both a little awkward. >> reporter: they have not seen each other since, but sam says she remains open to a relationship, as long as harris understands one thing. >> there is no way i'm letting go of my mom. i have been very lenient with him and all the stuff that he has said, and i want to know if

this comes out. >> reporter: last may, lee barnett was released from jail on two years' probation, back into the lives of family and friends she had left all those years ago. >> and then this is where we did that. it's an amazing experience to have your best friend disappear for 20 years and come back. >> she is just overwhelmed with friendship. >> all of our childhood memories are all coming back. she's not going to go anywhere, as far as i'm concerned. >> reporter: at this point, lee is not allowed to leave the united states. so, with the help of "48 hours," her kids came to her. reece was a total surprise... ( laughter and applause ) >> the first time i got to hug her after she got out of prison, she never let go of me. she just... i think she cried.

taken. and a fantastic weather today will continue through tomorrow. >> announcer: live from the channel 4 studios in boston, wbz news at 11:00 starts right now. breaking news. a stabbing this london that police are calling a terrorist incident. >> authorities there are saying three people were stabbed in an underground transit station in east london. one of the victims was seriously hurt while the other two suffered minor injuries. police used a stun gun to subdue the attacker. witnesses say he yelled "this is for syria" during the attack. britain joined the airstrikes against i.s.i.s. scotland yard's counterterrorism unit is treating this as a terrorist incident and is asking people to be alert and vigilant. there is also breaking news out of the white house. president obama will give a

terror attack. the white house said the president will update the investigation into what happened in san bernardino and talk about the broader threat from terrorism. this will be just the third time president obama has delivered a primetime address from the oval office. cbs and wbz will carry it live. the president's address will come as the fbi continues to dig into the background of the husband and wife blamed for this week's terrorist attack. chris martinez shows us. >> reporter: fbi agents invaded home in riverside, california, saturday morning. farook and his family use to live next door. >> i heard the windows crashing, the garage door being torn, breaking in, you know, by the law enforcement. >> reporter: the house belonged to a friend of farook's who allegedly purchased two assault rifles used in the shooting that killed 14 people. the fbi's investigation is also focusing on the couple's ties to terrorist organizations.

indication these killers are part of an organized larger group or form part of a cell. >> reporter: yet according to an unnamed federal law enforcement official, "the los angeles times" reports farook had some kind of contact with people from syria and the radical that ban group. his wife, 29-year-old tashfeen malik, urged support to i.s.i.s. and it leader in an online post just before the deadly rampage. malik's friend said in the last two years, she became more devout and started dressing conservatively. i.s.i.s.' official radio station called the couple supporters but stopped short of claiming responsibility for the attack. chris martinez, cbs news, san bernardino, california. >> one possible piece of evidence investigators will not get to see is what the nsa might have recorded from the couple's phone records. surveillance program was

avenues in boston after a rider poured an unknown liquid on an mbta bus. moments later, the female bus driver felt dizzy. >> she complained of watery eyes and, you know, burning and, you know, some respiratory issues. there was a number of other passengers on the scene who self evacuated. >> reporter: a hazmat team boarded the bus to investigate the liquid. >> heard it was a liquid scare to i made myself scarece. >> looked like the whole boston fire department was there and good to know they respond so quickly and actually worried about the situation. >> reporter: hazmat crews ventilated the bus but found no elevated readings of anything dangerous. >> i think any time something like this happens, you know, you're got to play it by the book and, you know, everyone's has a heightened awareness. >> reporter: yesterday, a bomb squad blew up a suitcase left on atlantic avenue by a lawrence man who was chargeed with planting a hoax device. >> yesterday was pretty scary

up and if we find this continues, we'll prosecute people, we'll to after you and we ask you not to do this. >> reporter: people remain vigilant and on alert. >> now that i know everything is safe, i feel better but i was a little uneasy. >> i would never want to say overkill. i'm glad of the response, you know? and glad, again, it was not really much of anything. >> reporter: the female bus driver was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. no major injuries. the incident remains under investigation. in boston, i'm paul burton, wbz news. new at 11:00 tonight, 18/95 was shut down by a bad crash. look at the backup on the in westwood. the car crashed into the median and hit a rock wall. the highway was closed so medflight could take the driver, a 47-year-old from rhode island, to the hospital. an 11-year-old boy was hurt but a strange crime.

bones of five people from a worcester cemetery. jim smith is following this case and joins us from the satellite center. jim? >> reporter: katie, this is now a case in and a story involving police from two separate states and a strange one. the remain of five people stolen from a crypt and police tell us that the suspect says it was done for religious reasons. >> i was over the cemetery today and it was like, you know, never heard of such a thing. >> it sounds like something out of a scary movie, human skeletal remains taken out of a worcester cemetery, turning up inside a hartford home. police in connecticut stay that's just what happened and now they've arrested a suspect, 32-year-old amidore madina. he was keep and showed them where to find the remains. police said the suspect practices religion called santaria. >> the bones, i believe, in this instance -- according to our interview with the accused

tonight, nasa is giving us the clearest view of pluto anyone will probably ever see. the new horizon spacecraft flew by pluto in july. nasa said it will take a year for new horizons to beam back all of its data. that's a long-distance call. >> very long distance call. well at the airport, 53 degrees at 2:52 this afternoon it reached that number and that's eight above the average high, 45, not too close to the record of 66, set back in 2001. so these were the highs -- again, lower 50s, a few mid- 50s, a glorious day without much wind. it felt so nice, in fact, warmer than it actually was. the temperatures have fallen since then, though. 41 in boston with 20s in outlying location and low-lying spots as we showed you earlier so a frosty time to the north. a lot of 20s in southern new hampshire, extending into massachusetts, bedford is 28. we have worcester, norwood, 26. taunton, 29. near 30 in part of cape cod except areas close to the water from provincetown to chatham, 40 degrees. interestingly, at the summit of mount washington at the observatory, way up there, over 6,000 feet up, it's 37 degrees. we have a temperature inversion

very balmy night at the mount washington observatory while down here close to the sea level, in the 20s in many suburbs to middle 30s in boston and nice recovery to the upper 50s tomorrow, except a little cooler on the cape. fine for the game down in gillette stadium in the afternoon, kickoff temperature around 54. fourth quarter, 44. it will be a nice little breeze out of the southwest, 5 to 10 miles per hour. that's all. a few cloud way up north. we may see a few high, thin cloud later tomorrow afternoon, may add to a colorful sunset in spots. just a few cloud on monday but basically, that's about it. it's looking really good to me and looking beyond that, looks like this high pressure is mind moving off and weak cold front, slight chance of a shower on tuesday, more likely showers on thursday, but the next couple of weeks, one to two weeks, the odds really favor above average temperatures. many of those days. here we go for the next seven, anyway. still looks pretty good.
