11:05 pm

officers who rushed in after the terror attack in san bernardino came together to tell their story and for the first time we're hearing that at least one child witnessed that shooting that killed 14 people at a holiday party. one police officer describes how he worked to keep that little boy calm. >> there was a female there with a small child, an 8-year- old little boy, that was just terrified, just shivering almost to the point like shaking like a leaf and i said what i said. i meant what i said. i said it for them just to kind of call down and relax, that we were going to do everything we can to get him out of that building safely. >> we also learned the center where the attack took place won't reopen until at least next month. the california band that was playing when terrorists attacked a concert hall in paris returned to the bataclan theater to pay their respects and this was clearly a very painful visit. members of eagles of death

11:11 pm
this was a completely uncommon sight on the common. someone decided to donate warm clothing for those in need by hanging the clothing on trees and statues with signs that let people know it was okay to take them. the city parks department told wbz it doesn't have a problem with it as long as no damage is done. and the generosity of the holiday season sparkling like a diamond tonight. >> someone put a real diamond engagement ring and a wedding band in a salvation army kettle outside the market basket in billerica. the engagement ring has been appraised at $3,500. the salvation army will auction that off saturday to raise money. >> we're going to help over 600 families with food. the children in those families will get toys and clothing just to make the holiday time special. >> last year a woman donated her wedding and engagement rings at north station and as news of that gift spread more jewelry was dropped into kettles around the boston area and that brings us to our
11:12 pm
jewelry donations added $30,000 kettle campaigns. in the next couple nights we might have a number of the night which might be 60 something which could be the temperature over the next week. >> that might inspire more people to give to those kettles. >> that will cause a lot of good moods and it's been a pretty easy stretch when it comes to the air for those people with the kettles. no arctic air. even today was cloudy, windy but still above average. not totally unexpected. this is an el nino december and the northeast. today's high temp was 45 in boston, chillier west of town in the 30s. look across the country and nothing really sticks out, 42 in minneapolis, 46 in chicago, 60 in seattle, l.a. at 80, no cold air and tomorrow no exaggeration. every single part of the lower 48 is supposed to be above average when it comes to temperature.
11:13 pm
times here this december. 33 in wooster now, haven't dropped off too much. there have been clouds around associated with a big storm moving out to sea, too far away to bring us significant impact today and a wave of cloudiness moving across, may be some partial clearing overnight into tomorrow morning. looking across the country again the wide perspective, a storm here and storm behind it and a lot of pacific air that keeps arctic air out of play. tomorrow morning it is winter jacket weather at the bus stop, max out mid-40s tomorrow afternoon, partly cloudy, a touch above average but not unusual. sunrise is 7:01. some clouds around to start, but i think we'll get more sunshine tomorrow than we saw during the day today, low 40s at lunchtime, mid-40s in the afternoon and clouds starting to return heading into tomorrow evening. so high temps 46 in plymouth, provincetown, nor wood 45,
11:14 pm
look toward the end of this week. 1 quick little system might bring a few morning sprinkles and showers thursday. then we'll brighten up. friday will follow a similar equation, chance for a quick shower in the morning and both afternoons turn quite mild up into the 50s. this weekend we're watching a storm move its way up the great lakes, a very mild storm track. normally when there's a storm moving that way and a front nearby we've got snow on the ground and an area of high pressure that keeps the front from moving through. there aren't either of those this time around. that front should be able to move sunday and what that means for us is a very, very mild stretch, 45 tomorrow, 53 thursday, 55 friday, 50s on saturday. if the sun comes out in any quantity sunday, we will go way up into the 60s, playing it kind of conservative right now. the record highs in the area, 62 in wooster sunday and in boston it's 63. we do have of a shot at both. it will -- have a shot at both.
11:15 pm
then the outlook as we head up towards christmas, it's above average temperatures. it looks like it's going to stick around and this pattern will likely stick around into january. here's your accuweather seven- day, no snow. on monday a wind driven rainstorm with a high near 62. so the question is what will happen as we head around the corner into january, february and march and these last couple years april? we've got our winter preview, a 30 minute special airing saturday at 7:30 with the whole weather team. we hope you can join us. if you can't join us, set the dvr and we'll try to answer some of those questions. >> can you give us a hint? >> yeah, i can. >> everybody is asking will it be as bad as last year and the hint is no, we do not expect that. >> that's a good hint. it is holiday shopping the easy way. you buy it online. the box is left at your front door.
11:16 pm
easy target for thieves unfortunately. tonight we'll learn about a simple device that may keep your gifts from getting swiped. >> reporter: there's nothing better than a home delivery to avoid the holiday crowds, but while many of us are busy at work the doorbell goes unanswered and the package sits sometime for hours. >> there are suspects that go out there, they'll follow fedex and ups trucks, really a problem. >> reporter: but now you can answer your door even when you're not home. >> so someone rings the door bell, it will ring on your cell phone. >> reporter: it's called ring. benjamin levy has one at his front and backdoors. >> do you need a signature? >> yes, i do. >> i can talk to the ups guy and ask him to put the package in another location that i want or leave it with a neighbor i know is home. >> reporter: but this device is not just about protecting your packages according to security an ed davis. it could keep a thief from breaking in. >> they could go to the rear
11:17 pm
comfortable forcing the door. >> reporter: levy is convinced he stopped a burglar from >> hi there. what can i do for you? >> do you know where the bev >> sorry. you. >> it was clear he was making up an excuse for ringing the doorbell. >> reporter: there's also a media site called next-door that helps neighbors keep a watchful eye on each other's hopes and allows homeowners to share surveillance footage. next-door is free. the ring doorbells $200 with a $30 annual fee to record and store video of all the activity at your door. >> people paying a lot more money than that to have their premises monitored. so this is limited to the front door. it doesn't cover the whole house, but i think us very helpful. >> reporter: according to -- it's very helpful. >> reporter: according to davis, the footage can help catch thieves and get a much better view of the suspect's
11:18 pm
regular cameras. a couple weeks ago we were talking about patriots perfection. now we're talking about a different team, the golden state warriors 23-0 tonight. >> and their next opponent the boston celtics. can the green take them down?
11:19 pm
to make a patriot a christmas tree you have to tuesday a lot of stuff. >> and you need a step ladder in many cases. this was a fun thing you had tonight. >> it was a blast.
11:20 pm
the stuff off, but it was fun. >> today was a day off for the patriots. however, a bunch of players took part in the team's holiday party for kids at gillette stadium and did a build a tree to get wrapped up like a christmas tree along with yours truly. >> reporter: marcus, can you see? >> can you see what they're doing? >> reporter: i know. tell me how special this day is for you. >> it's very special. i get to hang out with all these guys. say hi, guys. >> hi. >> reporter: what's your favorite christmas gift? >> probably a good old prime rib. how about that. >> reporter: what do you want for christmas? >> i think an electric guitar. >> reporter: you play the guitar? >> no. why not? >> how about a ring? why not indeed. i wasn't supposed to be decorated, by the way, just kind of happened. i was in the middle of it. it was a lot of fun.
11:21 pm
brandon lafell were also on hand signing autographs with more than 250 kids in need. the players also played games and sang holiday carols. it's the 22nd year the event has been put on by team owner robert kraft. >> it's super. and we forget how lucky we have it and seeing these young people, what the salvation army does is really terrific. >> reporter: how special is this? >> it's amazing, man, just going around here signing autographs, handing out food, seeing the joy on these kid' faces it's literally priceless and i know that i'm blessed to be able to do this today. >> a lot of our spirits are down in the locker room, but you come around these kids and see the smile on their faces and the joy we're bringing to them is great for everybody. >> indeed. good stuff all the way around. remember for a preview check out patriots all access friday night at 7:00.
11:22 pm
game day at 11:30 and the 5th quarter postgame show immediately following the game. basketball, steph curry and the golden state warriors improve to an eye popping 23-0 tonight. curry had 29 points and 10 assists, but it was klay thompson who stole the show draining 10 three-pointers. he finished with 39 points. up next for the warriors your celtics at the garden, but before that match-up the celtics face the bulls tomorrow night at the garden. so that's sports now. back to you. >> thanks, steve. the deep divide between donald trump and governor baker. >> why the governor is so disappointed with the presidential front runner's recent statements and why he tells our jon keller he could miss his party's convention no
11:23 pm

11:26 pm
>> reporter: but it's not just moral outrage that's bugging baker. >> i believe in the big tent of the republican party. >> reporter: his struggle to shed the political albatross of his party's right wing dates back to the 2012 primary race with arch conservative fisher. >> is what trump said part of a big tent? >> i certainly believe in a big tent, but i also believe what people want more than anything out of their public officials is the capacity to understand that you don't get to make all the decisions. this isn't, you know, king of anything. this is a democracy with a big d. >> reporter: and baker says he may exercise his democratic right to skip next year's gop national convention, trump or no trump. >> if you're right and that stuff lands in the middle of the budget process or the end of the legislative session, i'm probably going to be sticking around here. >> isn't that interesting? >> to further distance him, too from those donald trump comments, cement what he's saying.
11:27 pm
time a massachusetts republican has kept an arm's length distance from the party in washington which is perceived negatively around here and is much more conservative than the typical republican and in baker's case with the possibility of trump playing a big role there, he doesn't want any part of it. >> stay right here in massachusetts. >> you've got it. >> thank you. up next eric takes another look at the forecast. >> and we're in for a big warm- up.
