wbz's jim smith is live at the scene in revere. jim? >> reporter: david and lisa, as you might expect, a very grim and a very active scene here on waite street in the city of revere as state and local police investigate this triple shooting. as i said, we're on waite street just off of route 60 investigators out in front of a triple decker where this shooting occurred and we have confirmed at least one person has been killed. >> i just heard gunshots. that's it. >> reporter: how many shots? >> probably five, six. >> reporter: a gruesome scene on waite street in severe, three people shot suffering serious wounds. it was a quiet thursday night and suddenly neighbors heard gunshots. >> we saw a man. he was on the ground lying face up right at the front door and he was bleeding out. >> reporter: then what happened? >> then we rushed upstairs and i told my mother to call 911. >> reporter: they say a man and woman, possibly boyfriend and girl friend, were both hit by gunfire. a slightly older man was said

state and local police flooded the area. the officers also included k-9 units as they looked for a suspect. >> we heard like some screaming saying help. me and him went downstairs and he was bleeding out on the floor saying help face up and then we went back upstairs and we told his mom to call the cops. >> reporter: back here live in revere this story unfolding even as we speak, no official word on suspects, but you saw that k-9 unit there. there is a lot of ground to cover as they look for a suspect, certainly a very congested area and also off to this side there are marshes as lynn. so we assume the search is also taking place there. once again witnesses report four to five gunshots and also hearing screams, three people shot. we confirmed at this point at least one person has been killed. live on the scene here in revere, wbz news, jim smith. investigations. for the very latest watch wbz starting at 4:30 a.m.

>> we knock on the door of the driver and nobody was there. >> no operator on board, no one in control and investigators the train. today. something mapped that should not have been able to happen -- happened that should not have been able to happen that put our passengers in danger. >> tonight the investigation into what went wrong and right now massdot says all signs point to operator error. >> specifically perhaps what he did or didn't do when he got off the train. let's get right to julie loncich live in braintree with the latest tonight. julie? >> reporter: that they said is really the only focus of their investigation right now, operator error. meantime passengers say this train was traveling perhaps 40 to 60 miles per hour at its peak and they were all wondering why it wasn't stopping. >> we failed our passengers today. >> reporter: for nine harrowing minutes 50 passengers were on a run-away red line

>> all the lights went off, so everything was dark. we had no lights in the entire cars. >> that's the first time i noticed in quincy center we were going really fast and i was like wow, that's really weird. we hadn't stopped. >> reporter: the 6 a.m. train left braintree and barreled through four stops before finally coming to a stop between north quincy and js umass all without an operator. david vazquez had been cleared to put the train in bypass mode because of a broken signal. he was supposed to engage two brake systems and throw a toggle switch. instead he got off. the train took off and clipped his leg as it moved forward. governor baker indicated those brakes simply weren't on. >> manipulated, tampered with. it's pretty clear that it was set in forward motion, which is why it moved in first place. >> reporter: when the train finally stopped, passengers say it was another 30 minutes before help arrived. >> some people were trying to break the windows. most of the people were trying

>> reporter: it wasn't until then that most came to realize the danger they had just avoided. >> what happened today is unacceptable. it will be investigated and changes will be made. >> reporter: vazquez is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. meantime the red line you might be interested to learn has been operating with a one operator only system for four years. officials insist it is safe to operate with just one person. reporting live in braintree, julie loncich, wbz news. >> thank you, julie. in a statement tonight the union representing the operator made a pitch to bring back that second worker on every train, something the t did away with four years ago. the union said creating extra precautions in having a second employee such as a train attendant or guard assigned to these trains could have avoided this incident. tonight federal transportation officials tell us it is not the first run-away

two years ago an unmanned train in chicago left a railyard, hit a passenger train and injured 33 people. investigators blame that on maintenance. an incident in sacramento earlier this year sounds a lot like what happened in braintree. a mechanic fixing a problem bypassed a safety control and stepped off the train. the train started moving and derailed causing more than $77,000 in damage. we know federal investigators are meeting first thing tomorrow morning. we will bring you new information on this on the air and online as soon as we get it. tonight cheers and jeers for donald trump in new hampshire, protesters lining the event in portsmouth upset over his call to began muslim from entering the united states. he also picked up a big police endorsement tonight. jim armstrong is live in portsmouth tonight with the story. jim? >> reporter: david, in many ways an unusual event for donald trump. first of all, it was relatively small.

and there were very few trump supporters outside of the event. protesters, however, were well represented. [ music ] >> reporter: with music and signs their message was clear. >> i think he's unamerican in what he's calling for. >> reporter: hundreds of protesters lining the streets here united in opposition. >> there's a lot more people that disagree with his views than agree with them. >> reporter: focusing on donald trump's anti-muslim rhetoric. >> it's so contrary to the values we were founded on. >> reporter: tonight's event was closed to the public. only about 250 ticket holders could watch the gop front runner collect the endorsement of the police benevolent association. trump told this crowd people who disagree with him to his ban on muslims will come around to him on his point of view just as they have about his feelings on mexican immigrants. >> we can't afford anymore to

about terror attacks now as be were after 9/11. a new cbs new york times poll finds 44% of americans think another attack in the u.s. is likely in the next few months. that's a 16% jump from the paris attacks and the highest percentage since right after 9/11. in san bernardino fbi divers are searching a lake for key evidence in the deadly terrorist attack. center. what are they looking for? >> the couple might have dropped a computer hard drive there and they think it could contain key clues in the case. the lake where divers searched is just 2 1/2 miles from the building where the december 2nd shooting took place. the fbi says it's possible the couple came to this lake on the day of the massacre and the search could take days. >> we are building a time line of everything we know to insure that we can retrace every step they took. >> reporter: the fbi is also questioning enrique marquez. sources say he provided information about a terror plot

three years ago but didn't follow through. marquez is related to farook by marriage and has admitted he gave farook and his wife tashfeen malik the assault rifles used in the attack. he could face charges of providing material support for terrorism. over the next few days this community will mourn and lay to rest the 14 victims. theville says it has interviewed hundred -- the fbi says it has interviewed hundreds of people during this investigation and the agency might also canvas the neighborhood where the couple as well. tonight chipotle is apologizing for a norovirus outbreak that's made at least sick. most of them ate at the cleveland circle restaurant. the company's ceo says he is deeply sorry and promises to improve food safety at all of their restaurant's locations. the cleveland circle chipotle is still closed. that takes us to our number of the night. chipotle is valued at $576 a share.

fog, less than a 1/4 mile visibility in keene, orange, concord. it's low beam travel tonight and tomorrow morning and slower than usual travel. dense fog advisories out across all of new hampshire, south shore, the came, south coast as well as south county there in rhode island. so it's going to be a pretty murky night outside, not too cold, temperatures well above freezing, upper 30s to mid-40s, even 50s still in plymouth and down toward the vineyard, not bad for december. tomorrow morning fog and clouds, that murky beginning, but then we start to shed the cloud cover and it's looking around 60, another incredible afternoon. the main weather player that we're watching, see a weak front moving in from the west. that will keep the cloud around overnight and some of that fog, slight chance of a shower tomorrow morning across cape cod and the islands and once we get past the morning clouds we'll break into the sunshine, the afternoon looking stellar, very much like spring, got to

it will be friday and way above average but below record levels. tomorrow morning mostly cloudy skies, cape cod shower possible. as we head toward midday, we're brightening up that feel of spring and afternoon we're way into the 50s, mild and quiet friday night, highs near 61 in norwood, 60 in boston, wooster up to 55 degrees, again way above the norm. same idea saturday, partly cloudy, near 60 again saturday afternoon. a change for sunday, backdoor front starts to move in off the ocean. that's going to usher in cooler air. we'll also see more cloud cover sunday and a slight chance of a shower. so it's going to be an area divided. here in blue anywhere from the boston area down toward the cape, seacoast, north shore, 45 to 55 for highs sunday. heading out toward western massachusetts into connecticut 55 to 60 plus. so if you're traveling out towards springfield or
