the deal is for the weekend. >> pretty good weekend to head outdoors, especially tomorrow. boston 50 degrees, 52 down toward the cape and hyannis, orange 32, 35 in fitchburg, north central massachusetts into southern new hampshire much cooler. that's also where the fog has been developing. mainly this is the area where it will focus overnight and also where you'll see the coldest temperatures. many areas staying in the 40s all night long and staying near 50 in boston. we'll see sunshine mixing with the clouds tomorrow up near 60 degrees. changes by sunday. we'll bring in more clouds and cooler temperatures. we'll take a full look at your weekend forecast coming up in a short while. a crystal clear pick of how a red line train took off without an operator. a rubber cord was wrapped around the throttle controls allowing that train to leave the station and tonight it

>> we have the story live from south boston. they just announced some major safety changes. >> reporter: right, lisa. governor baker and t officials are both saying this happened because one employee broke a lot of rules, but still they are vowing changes to make sure it never happen again. as a run away red line train sped down the track, fernando daley was one of the passengers on board. >> we were lucky enough there was no other train in front of us because it would be huge. >> reporter: tragedy averted not just by luck but here at the mbta operations center. dispatchers got the call a minute after the train left braintree station. the race was on. they had just 10 minutes to clear the line so they could bring the train to a halt. >> there is no question i'm sure that nine minute duration felt like an hour to them during that particular time. >> reporter: wbz has learned the train's driver david

telephone cord around an accelerator control known as the asinistine valve, stepped out of the train to remove the bypass switch and forgot to remove the cord, so the train barreled past four stops with 50 passengers on board. >> we are confident this is an isolated incident where a single individual appears to have made multiple errors. >> reporter: thanks to quick thinking here those errors didn't lead to disaster, but they might get vazquez fired. >> in any way restricting the movement of the valve would, in fact, be a prohibited act that would subject the operator to termination. >> reporter: now because of this t officials say they will now require two operators to be present before the driver tries to do them sort of bypass -- any sort of bypass maneuvers like what vazquez was trying to do and are also reminding their operators never to tamper with any of these safety controls. live in south boston tonight,

we're following a developing story in southern california tonight. the fbi is investigating a fire at a mosque. now it's not far from san bernardino and the scene of last week's terrorist attack. leaders at the mosque say the building was firebombed. there were no injuries. in san bernardino fbi divers returned to a lake looking for clues in the shooting and specifically the hard drive of the couple's computer, the couple that ill canned 14 people. people. they'd been in the area of the lake the day before the attack. cbs news also learned their cell phones did use encryption technology and the fbi is trying to unlock those phones. tonight a brave survivor of the sandy hook massacre was honored at center court, the celtics calling this teacher a hero. two years ago she huddled her students in a bathroom keeping them quiet and safe. wbz's jim armstrong in the satellite center with the story new at 11:00 and i know she's now renewing her call for gun control. >> reporter: she freely

teacher, not a poll -- she's a teacher, the a politician, but as the sur -- not a politician, but as the survivor of a mass shooting she's well aware that answer of whatever it is long overdue. to be sure this is a bittersweet moment for kaitlin roig-debellis. friday night the celtics bestowed upon her their hero among us award recognizing the nonprofit she runs that teaches grade schoolers about compassion and kindness. >> all would have been lost if i had chosen to focus on the evil actions of that day. something to, you know, had to come through for my kids. >> reporter: three years ago next monday she was in hell, a teacher at sandy hook school in newtown, connecticut, she barricaded her 1st grade class in a bathroom protecting them from a mentally ill gunman. >> every single second of every day is the anniversary. monday is three years and that's very real and very raw, but it's every minute of every day.

years since roig-debellis has watch ad sounded as -- watched astounded as the mass shootings have continued. >> completely senseless and i am praying for those in positions of power in our country to put their head together and find a common sense solution because there's no reason for it. >> reporter: hours before her award here the governor of her homestate announced he wants to lead the nation to be the first to prevent those on the no fly list to prevent buying guns about. >> it's time for people to stand up and say if somebody has done something that has them on the terrorism watch list, then perhaps we should temporarily delay them from buying a gun. >> reporter: for this survivor herself that's a start. >> that sounds like a common sense solution to me. >> reporter: also today governor charlie baker said he's considering following connecticut's lead on this issue. the governor said he's going to look into whether or not massachusetts can issue its own sort of executive order that would stop people on the federal no fly list from being able to purchase guns here in massachusetts. live in the satellite center tonight jim armstrong, wbz news. >> thank you.

investigating the death of a new hampshire soldier killed in a training exercise of corporal andrew anesbury was hit by a live fire exercise. afghanistan. he was just 21 years old. tonight a followup on a story breaking here last night. a lynn man is now under arrest for a double murder in revere. a third person shot inside the home was seriously wounded. a motive. a despicable crime, remains stolen from a wooster accept tar and 1 local family -- cemetery and one local family over. it is the worst possible violation. my grandfather. >> reporter: bob josima is feeling a pain hard to imagine, his grandfather's final resting

disturbed, the remains of five relative stolen, all members of one of wooster's grand families the holdens and now the family is not resting in piece. >> when we heard the reports that someone had taken the remains of our family member and used them i think on an altar for religious ceremonies, it really just sort of made your -- it was saddening but more disturbing. >> reporter: police have charged emmador -- amador medina with the bizarre crime. he said he's a priest, 1 skeleton found at his apartment apparently still dressed in clothing. >> there were marble covers to the areas where the caskets and the bodies were laid to rest and so they had to be smashed and damaged and the caskets had to be removed and opened. >> reporter: in all nine adults and two children were interred in this mausoleum including bob's grandfather who left harvard to fight in world

grandfather charles handler holton. >> we're -- chandler holton. >> we're also concerned about wept are the remains are being -- whether the remains are being handled properly and with dignity and, of course, where are the remains? >> reporter: the family's main focus tonight is returning those remains in a dignified way and eventually repairing that damaged mausoleum. in new york state the call is overturned and for now fantasy sports will stay in business. boston-based draftkings and fanduel have won the right to continue operating. a judge in new york ruled they could no longer take bets. new york attorney general wants to shut down these sites. drones have become a big problem for airports including logan. at least 240 near collisions happened between drones and plane over the past two years. in most cases the pilot saw the drones, but in a few times they actually had to shift course to avoid collision.

a boston uber driver comes under attack and the whole thing is caught on camera. take a look. abdulazeez picked up a group early this morning on stewart

in the group and this is the video here verbally abused him about his religion. when he asked the group to get out, he was attacked. this continued then outside the car. azeez said he was horrified by the hateful comments. >> i have two kids. i am an american citizen. i love this country. this country gave me to driving. i like it. i support my family. i'm concerned. i'm very concerned now. >> drive, man. >> no, no. >> so azeez said that guy right there is the one responsible. boston police are now investigating. uber tells wbz they have banned that passenger from using their service. it's called brotherly love for a reason. today that reason spells out on paper. a -- spelled out on paper, a 12- year-old explaining how much he loves his war hero brother at st. margaret school in buzzard's bay. >> the students got the assignment to write an essay

thankful for and the 7th grader,ed aen mcdougle -- aiden mcdougle. his choice was clear. >> he's funny, fearless, hard working and kind and loving. >> reporter: darren mcdougle is also an army veteran who suffered two tours in afghanistan and suffer -- served two tours in afghanistan and suffered serious wounds in a bomb explosion. >> derek also surprised his little brother by showing up at today's assembly. >> i was just excited and stunned. >> very emotional. it means a lot that he would pick me. >> if you are really sad or in need of help, you should meet my brother. he always makes me feel like i'm the most important person in the world. >> reporter: derek is out of the military now. so another thing aden is thankful for is just having him home. >> he's something else. he's smart, you know, kind of

can't say this yet, but we're getting closer. 50 degrees at 11:00 tonight, wind southwest at 13, very mild evening in the city. it's colder in northern wooster county and southern new hampshire and this is also where we have pockets of fog. it's not as dense or widespread as last night, but there will be fog to start the day. as you look across the country, we see a lot of clouds but not a lot of stormy weather, snow or rainfall, a lot of pacific air moving in west to east creating clouds but not big storms. we have a few clouds moving in from the south and west. it will stay in the mid-40s for southeastern massachusetts, lower 30s in northern wooster county, but we rebound tomorrow, very similar to today. partly cloudy, well into the 50s to near 60 degrees. your mild epps -- mildest air is in southeastern

our pick of the weekend -- it's our pick of the weekend for sure. we're watching a backdoor front moving its way in westward. it brings clouds around sunday. it will feel pretty chilly heading into sundayful our forecast this weekend, partly cloudy -- sunday. our forecast this weekend, partly cloudy, another night above freezing and another night with the winter norths very active. many of you have been asking about that these past few weeks and sunday a lot of clouds, spotty areas of drizzle and on average our high temperatures in the low 50s. that makes it one of the cooler days but more than 10 degrees year. that cooler air will be locked in most of monday. drizzle around. the milder push of air and chance for rain and downpours isn't going to arrive until monday evening and monday night. so late in the day we'll spike our temperatures in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees, but

opening cut in the side, just some of the hiding places winchester school resource officer dan parineck wants parents to see and that's why this mock teen room was set up this fall to teach parents what to look for, an experience this mother wishes she had two years ago. >> i had a young athletic son with a great future in front of him. >> reporter: this is lori's son cory now. a heroin overdose in 2013 left him with severe brain injuries. the whole family now speaks to high school students about the dangers of doing drugs. >> if i knew all that i know now, this wouldn't have gone as far as it did and maybe i could have nipped this in the bud right away. >> reporter: lori said there were signs of his drug use in the house that she never picked up on, everyday items cory was using to prepare heroin. >> i noticed one of my serving spoons was gone and i would find q tips. >> reporter: lots of empty

of trouble. >> it also indicates dry mouth from taking medications like ritalin and adderall and also ecstasy. >> reporter: experts say don't be afraid to search your child's room and learn about all the possible places to look. gummi bears could be soaked in alcohol. a computer mouse could be hiding a scale and those pencil shavings might actually be marijuana. cory now focuses on educating kids. lori considers herself lucky that her son survived and hopes their work will save other parents the horror of drug addiction. >> standing there as a mom watching your child get the last rites is absolutely heartwrenching. >> reporter: they plan another display of their hidden in plain sight next year. this was a welcome surprise for the patriots and their fans. >> coming up next julian
