sweetness to their neighborhood . breaking news right now at noon, the entire los angeles school district, the nation's second largest is closed because of a threat. good afternoon i'm chris mckinnon. and i'm cath ridge hauser, that threat forced them to shut down more than 900 schools. this morning they ordered the school busses back to the yard because of this threat. right now authorities will only say the threat was received electronically. chris martinez reports from los angeles. >> we are closing all district campuses today due to a threat that has come. >> calls like this one went out to parents in los angeles this morning as authorities closed down the entire los angeles unified school district over an unspecified electronic threat made to "many schools." >> some of the details talked about backpacks, talked about other packages. >> police are investigating the

further details, officials said they are taking the precaution based on recent terror attacks in san san bernardino and over seas. >> i as superintendent am not going to take the chance with the life of a student. >> the superintendent ordered authorities to inspect every school by the end of the day. >> i want every school searched to make sure that it is safe for children and safe for staff to be there on wednesday. >> students who were already at school were supervised until they were picked up. >> we need the cooperation of the whole los angeles today. >> the shut down affects about 6 40,000 students, more than 1000 schools, chris martinez cbs news los angeles. >> and with more than the 00 campuses this shut down is a massive undertaking involving more than half a million kids.

we are joined by our security analyst former boston police commissioner ed davis, we have been mentioning, this is a huge task to take on, how would like this? >> well, kathryn, it's hard to say because each one of these cases are individual in nature. there is no doubt in my mind that this has evolved because san bernardino happens so close to la. but there are hundreds of threat that come into our nation's schools and public buildings every single day across the nation, they are taken in the contest of what the threat is and right now people are afraid, so they are reacting in a way that that maybe a little too cautious. i don't want to criticize officials out there. i certainly think they are doing exactly think they are doing what they have to do,

this incident happened to them, an incident that happened in new york that was discounted. you know, this has to be taken in the context of how people feel across the nation right now. it's really troubling. >> and davis, thank you very much we appreciate your expertise on this topic, thank you very much. >> thank you, chris. now to a developing story this noon, the driver of that run away redline train is meeting right now with the mbta leadership for a disciplinary hearing. sources are keling wbz he could know his fate by the end of the day if he is going to lose his job. david vazquez is accused of tampering with a switch on a redline train. when he got out to fix a signal issue the train kept going with passengers on board. meanwhile at the mbta operations center worker had minutes to stop the train before it could have collided with another trolley. lee saunders got that call, he started kill the power on the tracks but the train's moment

he was able to stop the train, in 15 years he has never experienced anything like this. >> we deal with thousands of calls a day and it's all kinds of different scenarios and situations, you know. sometimes it's just gun fire or someone with a knife that's on the platform. never never a train moving on its own with no operator. >> meanwhile, vazquez's lawyer says his client is a worker with a spotless record who is beloved bypass injuries. he says there is still a lot of conclusions are drawn. >> right now the mbta says the mechanical problem caused a commuter rail line delay that left passengers stuck for several hours, now according to the t, a train on the kingston plymouth line broke down around 10:30 last night, the t said attempts to fix the train didn't work, passengers complained on twitter that they were left in the dark, riders
