even covering his face when passing the security cameras. colleen ritzer was just 24 years old. she was in her second year at a teacher at danvers high, her family says she had always wanted to be a teacher, a lifelong goal dating as far back as preschool, she loved math and enjoyed sharing that love with her students, she was a beloved member of the faculty there. chism was found guilty of rape during the assault in the school bathroom but not of the second count which was in the woods our side the school, jurors had asked the judge for clarification on that charger injury in the afternoon. >> thank you. our christina hagar has been covering this case since the very beginning, she has been in the courtroom every day, and among the things she has seen the emotional reaction of colleen ritzer's mother. the family overtime has opted not to talk about this case, they have put out statements about their daughter, the significance of her life and contributions, but so far they

the crime. i want to go to christina right now, christina you were in the courtroom today when this verdict was read there in salem. liam and i could see as could our viewers the way that colleen ritzer's mother wept quitely, the way philip chism's mother collapsed in her hands, set the scene, describe the members of the jury and the verdict. >> reporter: well, lisa, this is something i have found to be typical covering trials as you are waiting for a verdict, people sort of let their guard down, relax, smiling in the hallways, even though it is a heavy subject that we know the jury is deliberating in a different room. and but when we get that word in the courtroom when the guard comes out and says we have a verdict, the mood changes immediately. and that is what happen this time, no different. family gathered very quiet in
5:02 pm
judge at first before bringing the jury in warned family members, relatives and friends on both sides to please keep their composure, complimented them for having done so this whole month long trial which was very difficult at times very emotional subjected matter, some graphic and difficult to listen to subject matter. he thanked them for their restraint, relatives that is. and then asked them to please continue that for the verdict. and to respect the jury's decision, consider what they've been through, how agonizing the decision has been for them, saying they have -- they are changed forever for having gone through this experience and the judge actually asked any friends and relatives or anyone in the courtroom who felt they couldn't keep their composure to please stand by the door so there would be a quick exit out if there was a problem. you saw the video colleen

admiral and reserved throughout the trial did put her head in her happens, her husband putting his arm around her, philip chism's mother i was sitting right behind her, she had friends around her holding their arms around her, she had her head down, philip chism looking straight ahead really without expression. he has in recent days been looking around a little bit more, been a little bit more expressive. but, really did not change his expression perhaps prepared, an indication that he was prepared for this verdict, although a bit of a surprise with that not guilty finding on the second rape charge that he had faced, and we know the jury had asked a question about that second rape charge and whether the time of colleen ritzer's death had anything to do -- you know, played into whether they could find him guilty of that, apparently they found that there wasn't enough there to
5:04 pm
rape in the woods while she was alive at any rate. so, at this point, the attorneys on both sides have left. the ritzers we don't know, they have routinely been leaving through different exits to avoid the media, to avoid cameras understandably. and we just don't know what their plan is tonight. we do know we expect to hear from the district attorney at 5:30, we'll send it back to you. >> under state law, first degree murder usually carries life without parole, we learned that is not the case with philip chism, why is that? >> reporter: well, that's because he is a juvenile. he is 16 years old and this crime happened when he was only 14 years old at danvers high school, a freshman a couple years ago. and because of a supreme court decision a few years ago, juveniles are entitled to parole.
5:05 pm
of that will come up at sentencing, at which point his attorneys will make arguments for him to determine when he should be eligible for parole, where exactly he will spend his time and in what manner. there is a hearing set for that december 22 be, before sentencing, that is a presentencing hearing, so perhaps we'll learn some of the particulars of that. you are right, normally if this were an adult, murder in the first degree would carry an automatic sentence of life without parole, that is not the case for juveniles in the state of massachusetts. >> christina hagar live tonight in salem. thank you so much christina. christina mentioned just a moment ago we are expecting a news conference from the essex county district attorney, we may be able to show you a live picture, they already set up the podium there. this was a major victory for prosecutors today specifically assistant prosecutor kate mcdougal who made it clear to the jury that he was not
