louisa live with more. >> reporter: well, the saga just doesn't seem to end, that's of course, chism back in court today as you said on an attempted murder charge for assaulting the department of youth services employee. and this is after a very emotional day in court when he was found guilty of murdering a beloved danvers high school teacher. >> guilty, deliberate premeditation, and extreme atrocity with cruelty. >> reporter: 16-year-old philip chism appeared expressionless, found guilty of first degree murder, behind him, the mother of colleen in tears. p eggy ritzer was able to express herself after more than a month of disturbing testimony regarding the brutal death of her daughter, colleen. >> one of her favorite quotes, was there is something good in everyday.

a well loved math teacher, she stalked by philip chism, strangled and stabbed. also the rape in a high school woman's bathroom, armed robbery for stealing her underwear. >> these jurors have given this case everything they have. >> reporter: the jury ultimately not buying the defense's argument that he was in the throes of mental illness when he murdered ritzer. the family saying the legacy not over. >> we will not allow her death to define how she's remembered. >> reporter: regarding that hearing today, prosecutors say chism was in the youth detention facility in 2014 when he followed a worker in to a locker room, beat and choked her and in the ritzer case, he now faces a life sentence with the possibility of parole. we're live this danvers, louisa

there's a sense of relief this morning, danvers residents have been watching the trial closely and were relieved when the verdict came quickly, most say they're pleased with the verdict and hope the town and ritzer family can heal. more than two years after the crime, many say it's still hard to understand. >> they put it behind them, i think it's good for the parents, and of the, of her and maybe put it behind them now. i think it's good for all of us. >> just terrible, you know, i'm just glad it's over with, you know, and, um, to be honest with you, i hope he never gets out. >> the school released a statement saying they hope with this verdict the community can heal. and remember, colleen's message of being good to people. the judge set a hearing for next week to discuss chism's sentencing, stay with wbz on air and online for the latest on the case. new this morning a bad crash in wakefield, emergency responders rush to the scene of 128 south, just after 1:00 a.m.

paramedics took them both to the hospital, the vehicle then caught fire, state police are now investigating. in other news, brewster police for an armed man, holding up the brewster market, holding up the clerk and threatening the owner's mother, new bedford detectives want to know if he committed a similar crime there. wild winds collapse a wall in malden right on the street, fell on several people walking by, including a mom and her toddler. nicole jacobs is live in malden this morning with a closer look at what happened. nicole? >> reporter: chris, kathryn, where that wall collapsed, it's all cleaned up now and if you take a look now, this wooden beam is all that's left of the wall, there were no serious injuries rewards -- with regards

surveillance video captures the story. >> so heavy, unbelievable, i wouldn't wish it on anybody >> reporter: five people walking just outside a construction area, a chinese plywood shielded debris. >> like, i could've died and i'm started crying a little bit. >> reporter: but as the wind blew, that barrier toppled, several were trapped including a mother and her toddler. maureen finn was there too. >> i want to thank the people that lifted it off of us, that guy that dragged me out of it >> reporter: good samaritans rushed in to help. >> we didn't know what happened, we just ran out there and saw people underneath, heard a baby crying, trying to lift it out and get the people from underneath. >> reporter: city building inspectors are now looking in to it, how a casual stroll turned in to an urgent rescue. everyone who was briefly trapped and treated at the hospital is expected to make a full

we're live in malden, nicole jacobs, wbz "this morning". 5:07 right now, the mbta taking formal steps to fire the operator of the runaway train on the red line, david vasquez will be fired after he serves the 30 day unpaid suspension that was handed down yesterday. sources tell wbz that last thursday, vasquez wrapped a phone cord around the train's throttle. when he got out of the train to fix a signal problem and then forgot to set the hand brake. that's not what he tell the union. >> as far as wrapping it around, no, he doesn't admit to that in me. >> without the hand brake, the red line train took off, rolling through three stations before other employees cut the power to the system and stopped it. more than half a dozen people recovering after this nashville. the southwest airlines boeing 737 was arriving from houston when it slid right off the

[ laughter ] 50/50. temperatures running colder in all spots, 43 boston, 37 worcester, 38 nashua, 34 taunton and comparing things to yesterday, running colder in all locations. hour by hour forecast, temperatures will stay in the 40s, for the rest of this afternoon here in boston, at least. 40 degrees 8:00 a.m., we fall there, and going back to the mid 40s, by 40, 43 degrees by noon, and by 1:00 44 degrees, with full sunshine thankfully, it

heated exchange over u.s. military, intervention, government spying on americans, communications and also immigration, and front runner donald trump definite -- defended his call to temporarily ban muslims, calling it a security measure, he promise he won't run as an independent if he loses the nominations. a guilty verdict in the philip chism trial, a jury rejected the defense claims that the danvers teenager is legally insane when he killed his high school math teacher colleen ritzer. the jury also convicted him of aggravated rape and robbery because he was 14 years old at the time of the crime, he'll be sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole. and that verdict brings some closure for colleen ritzer's family. >> this morning, our jon keller looks at how we can help her family honor her memory. >> reporter: good morning. it's everyone's worst nightmare. a beloved friend or family member brutally murdered in a random act of inexplicable violence. and as little as we can say to

colleen ritzer other than we're horrified and heart broken by what happened to her. in theory, her killer who was 14 when he committed the crime teenage 31. we can only hope judge david lowy exercises his authority to put him behind bars for life by imposing concurrent sentences, the ritzer family deserves prospect of having to relive right hand agony years from now in a possible parole process. i don't have much interest right now in trying to understand what compelled this murderer to descend in to savagery. the prison psychologists can work on that while the rest of us direct our understanding and compassion toward the victim's survivors. but the case does leave unanswered questions. could this criminals derangement have been better identified and treated to neutralize the threat he posed? what did his adult overseers and peers know? when did they know it and what
