that there is no current, public schools. >> reporter: the biggest news out of the news conference? schools will be open tuesday with a reentry planned for students and staff. >> for example, our principles will be having faculty meetings in the morning as staff come in, to make sure everybody has got common information. >> reporter: on monday, the high schools were deserted after mark conrad made the decision to close all 17 of nashua schools, leaving more than 11,000 students at home. threat to a school administrator which conrad said threatened specific acts of violence to students and staff and nashua's two high schools. >> it was very specific in terms of naming the two high schools by name, where the action would occur. it would -- it was a specific to today's date, saying today is the date that harm would be done to students.

the means by which students would be armed. >> reporter: state police and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms helped police sweep the school with dogs. they found nothing. no word from law enforcement on who did this and why. now, counselors will be available for students tomorrow and the superintendent felt the need to defend his decision to close the schools. he said it was the specificity of that threat that made him do it and the last time nashua closed any schools due to a threat was a decade ago. live in actual -- live in nashua, paula, back to you. six american nato soldiers killed in a suicide attack in afghanistan today. martin. >> this is one of the deadliest attacks so far this year. it happened just outside of bagram airfield, the biggest us military facility in afghanistan.

bomber took his motorcycle, he rammed it into a group laden with explosives into a patrol near a village in afghanistan, six americans were killed, two other nato soldiers were injured in that attack. the taliban at this hour is claiming responsibility for that attack. coalition deaths in afghanistan have been declining as the us slowly withdraws its forces there. >> thanks. making tonight, massachusetts police are searching for a mother who they say took off with her two kids. of. the search has been going on all day. lakeville with the latest. those children? >> reporter: paula, stephen kerrigan, the father of these children, is deeply concerned about their safety. he says he tells me tonight he is actually in panic mode. this is not the first time. his ex-girlfriend has taken the kids -- this is the first time she's taken them away this long without a trace. >> bring the kids back. >> reporter: a father reaching

children, eden rose and five- year-old stephen, jr. went missing on sunday when their mother, valerie mcgrath, left with them and never returned. >> it's unfair. i don't know where they could be. it's a scary thought that you don't know where they could be. no one knows. family doesn't know. i don't know. >> reporter: police say they do have concerns for the children 's safety and have issued a warrant out for valerie's arrest for minor kidnapping. stephen, who has sole custody of the kids, says he allowed the kids to meet with their mother only part of the day to celebrate stephen junior's birthday. she was supposed to return by 5 pm on sunday. that never happened. >> i'm just scared for their safety, to tell you the truth. >> reporter: stephen, along with police, happens searching all day. eden rose never went to school today and police are searching for her 2002 land rover discovery, license plate number 847 zz2.

way out up the lawrence river valley. and rain showers starting to move in from the west. most of those arrive tomorrow morning. here is our hour by hour. temperatures in the 40s for most towns all night long. slight chance of overnight shower but mostly starting to pick up tomorrow morning. grab the rain jacket before leaving the house. and then midday on, a batch of heavier rainfall and more steady showers will move through. highs way up into the 50s all across the region. very quickly that rain will move out. a look at the trend for this week, keep in mind average night would be in the 20s. average day in the 30s. high of 68 on christmas eve and 60 on christmas itself, a ton of records being set this week. the full rundown in a few. two teens plead not guilty to charges they had a man. elvira sanchez waves to her family as she entered the courtroom today. police say she was riding in a woods on friday. according to authorities the

when the jeep hit a man who was walking in somerville and that victim was seriously injured and is still in the hospital. sanchez is now free on personal recognizance. woods was held on $500 bail. next month. a third person has been charged in connection with the numerous from a worcester armory. tyrone james was trying to sell james will be charged with lying to investigators and having one of the stolen weapons in his possession. investigators say army reservist james morales broke into the artery and stole 16 weapons last month. there is more trouble for chipotle. the centers for disease control has now linked the restaurant to another e. coli outbreak. this one in three states. five people in kansas, north dakota and oklahoma say they got sick after eating -- meeting at chipotle. health officials trying to figure out whether it's a

most recent outbreak. the restaurant has been under fire after 53 people got sick in october with e. coli. then more recently in massachusetts, with dozens of dc students coming down with the number of virus after eating at the cleveland circle location. >> it was mayhem, very intentional. a strip of road notorious for wild fun, it becomes the scene of a horrible crash. a woman plows right into people on the vegas strip. police say she did it on purpose. that scene was described as just horrific. one person is dead. dozens more are injured. tonight there are many questions about why the woman people. chris martinez of cbs has the story. >> reporter: the las vegas strip is open and back to normal after a night of chaos. police say surveillance video shows 24-year-old lakisha holloway with a three-year-old in her car plowing into crowds on the sidewalk. >> video conference we believe

i do not it -- i do not believe it to be an act of terrorism. >> reporter: 32-year-old jessica valenzuela from arizona died in the crash. dozens more were injured. >> we are going to start off by filing one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon. >> reporter: the car was going as fast as 30 to 40 miles per hour when it first plowed into pedestrians on this sidewalk. they say it later slammed into another crowd just down the street. >> looks like she wasn't even trying to stop. she was looking straight forward. >> she accelerated and kept mowing everyone down. >> reporter: she sped away before parking at the hotel to alert a valet. >> she had ran over some individuals on las vegas boulevard. and requested the valet parker to call 911. >> reporter: the woman had recently moved to the area from oregon and was living in her car. officers are still investigating a possible motive.

is this going to be the warmest december on record? 52 in boston, 45 in worcester, nashua at 49, more mild air off to the south and west. plenty of 40s and 50s. that's going to be the case all week long. the milder air as we come in on gusty winds all day today, slowly those winds subsiding, much calmer tomorrow morning. the wind will start to pick up again out of the south tomorrow afternoon. some gusty winds in particular southeastern massachusetts, as guests coming out of the south- cloudy, slight chance of the 40s overnight. tomorrow, 59 in plymouth, 57 in boston, manchester near 50. another day that is way up above average. of rain. move through this week, holiday shopping -- holiday shopping plans or travel, the showers start moving. then we'll see another batch of showers as steadier rainfall across the region from lunch time until dinnertime tomorrow

moving pretty quick but a fairly wet second half of the day in particular. then as we had her wednesday, fog and clouds, really a damp overcast day but the rain holds off until late. as we head into wednesday afternoon, steady, heavy rainfall, good downpour, they will move through each wednesday night. next few days, we've got the showers tomorrow, temperatures well up into the 50s. a lot of fog and heavy rain late on wednesday, still in the 50s and then look at christmas eve at 68 degrees. a huge surge of warm air moving up the east coast. we will not be alone. we're talking millions of people are going to have their warmest christmas eve ever recorded. a forecast of 68 during the day, 64 at night, a few showers, gusty southwest winds. if the golf course is open, you'll have the opportunity. this is the oldest. all records that will be set on christmas eve alone. be high?

yesterday, crews were there taking down the goalposts, all in preparation for the winter classic that will be played at gillette stadium. where crews have started turning the field into a hockey rink. the bruins taking on the montreal canadiens on new year's day. we just learned that grammy award winner singer-songwriter nate bruce, american authors and the boston pops will be among the performers at the classic, it will be the seventh game since the event started in 2008. governor baker helped spread christmas cheer today ringing the bell at the salvation army downtown. each year the red kettle raises millions of dollars to help children and families all across the state. so far they have raised just over $2 million but they still need your help. their goal this year is $3.4 million. holiday season is so often beautiful but it does spawn so
