las vegas strip was living in the car with her three-year-old daughter. one person there was killed. more than three dozen others were hurt. new at 5:30, stopping swatting calls. far too often we've seen local police called to scenes of reported emergencies only to discover it was all a hoax. now a new effort is underway to make it illegal to intentionally mislead emergency responders. truck -- it's only because the law to report a fake bomb threat or terrorist threat. but some law -- some lawmakers want to close that local -- close that loophole. >> reporter: framingham police swarmed this neighborhood in april. they received a call from a man named peter who said he had taken his family hostage. >> there were a few cruisers still here. >> reporter: the real peter was actually at work when the call came in. >> they were all around her house. my house. guns drawn. >> reporter: the only people inside were peter's 96-year-old

surprised when she looked outside. >> i see too many police. i said, wow. what's happening? >> reporter: the family? victims of swatting. that's when a person calls 911 to fake an emergency, often causing a swat team to race to an unsuspecting person's home. >> then i really got concerned because i wanted to know what happened to us. >> reporter: it also happened in groton this year. and then a month later at the library in downtown hopkinton. >> incredible waste of resources. >> reporter: another swatting hurt police. in that case officers actually handcuffed the would be suspect hoax. >> we're going in. that's how we're trained. >> reporter: the framingham growing problem alongside congresswoman katherine clark. she proposed legislation that federal law. >> it is far more than a hoax.

afternoon looks pretty wet. crew -- it quickly will taper off. fog fills in tomorrow night, very foggy, damp day on wednesday and then the next round of rain pushes in late on wednesday afternoon and into wednesday night. downpours here that will linger into wednesday night. behind the downpours, extreme warmth. well into the 50s tomorrow. wednesday, also in the 50s. very damp outside, not a great day to go for a walk. thursday, way up into the 60s. we are going to see record highs up and down the eastern seaboard. a big push of southerly winds, 60s, 70s and 80s toward florida on christmas eve. warmest ones on record for us here in boston, only twice have we hit 60 on the 24th. right now the top spot is 1996 at 61. current forecast for christmas eve, 68 during the day, 64 at night. temperatures will be 30 degrees above average and a couple showers, most of the day's drive. last-minute shopping, heading
