>> we have some big changes on the way monday into tuesday, we have our first winter storm. thankfully this morning no weather to report. we have a few showers though. you want to take the rain gear with you. i have the rain boots on. here's a look at radar. the light showers around boston to bedford and also some steady rain. so winter weather in northeastern parts of new england but notice we have this big line of rain and then eventually some winter weather moving in. that doesn't get here until once we get into monday night and tuesday. until then temperatures stay mild. we're 40s to start off the day and temperatures will actually get into the mid-50s. this afternoon some breaks in the rain but more showers later this evening. we'll go through the timing of the first winter storm and the timing.

we do begin this morning with some breaking news. it has been another night of violent weather in the south. this time tornados ripped through the dallas area. at least 7 people have been killed so far in this latest round of storms in a 40-mile long stretch south of dallas. they ripped the roofs off of homes. the winds tossed cars over as if they were toys. trees onto utility lines. and well. one resident said his wife left their home just minutes before it was destroyed. >> by the grace of god, i'm really grateful of, you know. my wife works not that far from here. if i didn't call her she'd be here right now and my kids too.

for victims. the airport halted flights. the death total across the south now stands at 25 since wednesday's violent weather. and closer to home now a fire has heavily damaged a home in dorchester. at least 6 children and ten adults have been burned out of their home. fortunately everyone was able to get out safely. firefighters say the fire started in a front room of the three family building. >> heavy fire showing in the i immediately stuck a second alarm. it was occupied accounted for but it eventually went to a four alarm fire. fire was an accident. apparently a candle may have come in contact with a liquid. the chief estimates the damage at $750,000. a mystery in upton police

remains in a wooded area yesterday. police calling it an unattended death. the da, medical examiner and police now investigating. an officer killed in the night. the department. he was killed five years ago in a gun battle with robbery suspects. we report on an emotional evening for a fallen hero. >> i want to thank everybody tonight. this is really nice after five years. >> five years later a community the people joining from several communities remembering the officer at the he was murdered responding to a robbery at a department store the night of december 26th, 2010. >> my father was a police officer, my brother obviously died right here, and we miss him tremendously, i mean, especially

police have now identified the man who sparked a six-hour stand off with police. a 53-year old is now facing charges for the ordeal. our cameras captured the chaos as he was tackled to the ground. moments later his home went up in flames. investigators say the fire was accidental. three would be robbers caught in the act in east boston when police responded to a 911 call. they showed up to a house and found the door forced open. officers found three men. all three now expect in court on monday. can now, the p atriots will be shorthanded. receivers will not play, and safeties out due to injuries. it is a big game for both teams. new england can

good morning, and welcome back. we have temperatures in the 40s and some scattered showers out there. they'll stick around all afternoon. a few breaks late this afternoon. temperatures will actually be in the mid-50s. one more mild day before big changes move into the forecast. we have our first winter storm of the season. we'll go through some early snow fall projections coming up in just a few minutes. all right. there's been another fatal shooting by police in chicago. two people were killed when officers responded to a domestic disturbance call early in the morning. one was a college student and the other a mother of five. police say they came across a combat active person, the mother of the college student says he had challenges. >> he was having a mental situation of some kind. he'll get, you know, a little loud but not violent. i was just with my son on christmas. i mean, he talked to him.

he had to control his temper. >> the 19-year old was studying engineering. the mother of five was 55 and had adult children. the chicago police already facing a federal civil rights investigation and now an independent board will review this deadly shooting. new video captures scary moments for travelers onboard this plane set to take off. passengers were forced from their flight after smoke started filling the plane. everyone evacuate safely. we are told they got back on board the same flight and took off hours later. i don't know if i could do that. well, if you use sprint or verizon you could have some money come your way. customers have until thursday, december 31st to claim refunds for unauthorized third party males sangs. charges for those things were allegedly buried in bills. it's known as cramming. both

terrifying moments for one family after they drove right into the heart of a wildfire in the family thought they were a safe distance from the fire and they said there were no road blocks. suddenly some of the fire landed on their windshield. the family says they were terrified at one point when they were surrounded by smoke and couldn't see anything.

safely. the fire is now 60 percent contained. and evacuation orders have been lifteded for dozens of homes. you can hear kids in the car, too. it sounds scary. well, we are going to be dealing with possible snow flakes. it looks like monday wants to bring winter to us for the first time really this season. for now not dealing with any winter weather which is great if you have any traveling you have to do today. it should be okay. just running into a wall of some rain in a few locations. looking at radar zooming into some local looks here. downtown boston steady showers, and to the north ask west of there well. and into southeastern parts, taunton, bridgewater

south and to the east and more wintry weather once you get to extreme northeastern parts of new england. notice this huge system that stretches all the way back to another low pressure system developing, and this one bringing blizzard conditions to the texas pan handle as well as into new mexico and this is the system that will effect us monday night into tuesday. but first want to get you through the next couple of days. hour by hour forecast and today to show you the rain chance, 6 a.m. steady showers and basically north with some spotty showers to the south. and as we continue through this afternoon notice plenty of breaks in the rain to get any errands done, no problem here. 5:00 the showers start to push in from the north moving to the south through 7 p.m., spotty showers move off the cape and islands by 11 o'clock tonight clearing things out, maybe a few icy spots as temperatures fall to around freezing but no new precipitation falling from the sky for monday looking okay there.

the 40s, 45 degrees in boston and temperatures will stay in the 40s for the rest of morning. by noon 54, by 2:00 highs today topping off near 60 for a lot of spots. 55 in boston, 61 in taunton. lows tonight around the freezing mark with some 20s farther to the north and west. tomorrow high temperatures in the mid and upper 30s a cold arctic blast here. and here's the picture we have medical advisories, watches and warnings out of the midwest and we don't have any for us just yet but in the hour by hour forecast 5 a.m. tuesday that's when things start to pick up and it looks like snow first through tuesday 5 a.m. until about 9 a.m. then the snow changes to rain. it's a tricky system because of the temperatures playing a huge role. preliminary thinking here is 2 to 4 inches of snow, keep the shovels on stand by, snow

trapped sea turtles along the shores. rescuers packed the living ones into these boxes and took them to marine hospitals. a year ago more than half of these turtles were dead when they washed ashore because the the director of the sea turtle hospital at the new england aquarium. >> a lot of them so cold that their heart beat is somewhere around 1, 2, p 4, beats a minute. >> but officials say this year the sea surface temperature in cape cod bay is the warmest it's ever been. bob who has been rescuing them for more than comfortable in the bay. >> the water temperature being very warm in the season keeps them here longer. two weeks ago when we had a big pulse of turtles 80 to 90 percent were

line of duty. the officer died in 2010 trying to stop three suspects after they robbed the counter at kohl's. the officer was shot in a gun battle with the suspects and later died at the hospital. his widow and family spoke at last night's vigil. six children and ten adult now temporarily homeless after a fast moving fire in dorchester. luckily no one was hurt. it started in the front room of the three family building. and a christmas fire brockton. the father and daughter both suffer from multiple sclerosis and now a friend is calling on neighbors to lend a hand. >> it's scary when your house is on fire. >> everything is destroyed. >> the 34 says the family was opening up their gifts on christmas night when a fire second story home. >> we have no clothing, we ran out of the house with the

keep that in mind. i'll show you details in just a second. first today we're dealing with our own showers in the form of all rain temperatures too warm for any wintry mix which is fine by me. the rain, the stead yes, sir rain still on the north shore. the coast line and farther inland as well. and all the showers pushing to the east. a few spin ankles around the boston area with a shower about to move into downtown one again. those showers also moving to the east. slightly bigger picture and the timing here shows an hour by hour forecast. we keep a wintry mix if extreme northeastern parts of new england for the rest of us dealing with the rain. stead yes, sir rain starts to let up by 8 a.m. and actually lifts slightly to the north. we'll keep an overcast sky. otherwise an overcast day and spotty showers redevelop as the system pushes to the south through this

the steadiest rain right around the southern farts parts of the state here and about 11 o'clock all the clearing skies tonight into monday morning. the commute looking just fine but it's the tuesday morning commute that will be tricky. visibility lit fog from boston to taunton, and visibility two and a half miles or less in bedford. nothing too dense at this hour but we might see some foggy conditions before this temperatures in the 40s. 45 degrees in boston on our way to a high of 56 degrees and temperatures will be very warm. one more mild day before winter makes a come back. overnight falling to 31 degrees rain comes to an end and expecting some clearing conditions too. as we head into monday the temperatures will only be in the low to mid-30s. here's the big picture, we have multiple watches, warnings, advisories et cetera posted because of this system. that one tracks into our area monday night and tuesday morning. here's the latest hour by hour

morning. that snow starting to move and fall into the boston area here. temperatures cold enough that we do expect snow first change to go a wintry mix then to all rain by tuesday afternoon. it's a very interesting system that we'll have. any of that slushy heavy snow looks like it will fall early tuesday morning accumulating to two to four inches and just outside the 128 belt. boston more of a coating to two inches of snow and also for our friends in southeastern mass as well. plowable snow. but again all that change to go rain and a lot of the snow melting by tuesday afternoon. tuesday's high 39 degrees. here's the 7-day continuing into wednesday 42 degrees, thursday 48 with another chance for rain showers. back to 40 for friday and next saturday temperatures in the 30s. weather trivia time
