4:30 am
right now at 4:30, we have our eye on the storm, the snow has been untiling all night and some places it's already changing over to sleet. >> that could mean a messy morning commute, we are keeping a close eye on the roads for you. a sloppy mess, we have areas of snow, sleet and a changeover approaching, the hour by hour time line. danielle, after the warmest disease on record people across massachusetts trying to get back in the swing of things.
4:31 am
hauser. and i'm chris mckinnon, a winter weather advisory is in effect right now, the snow around midnight. the changeover. >> yeah, this is the part that gets tricky, from snow to sleet, it is a messy morning out there. we have a team of meals meteorologists tracking this for you,. >> reporter: katherine and chris good morning to you, tracking our first flakes and sleet pellets of the season after 790s last week, they bring in our first winter storm so far this year, a coating of sleet on the ground, a wintery scene. this storm is about a sloppy mess. accumulation is not huge but having an impact.
4:32 am
the door to see some of the state troopers and police on the roads making sure everyone is safe, we are talking about in general sleet, it is a sleet storm coming through this morning and that is going to cause slow travel coming out here early on, there are stretch the of slick roadways on route 2. downpours at southern massachusetts as that part of the state changes over to general garden variety rain fall. so for the most part looking at a coating to a couple inches of snow and sleet on the ground, as you head up across the border, more significant snow fall into significant parts of northern parts of new england, way too much warm air to let us see pure snow fall which would be easier to deal with. we are expecting just the icy roadway that we haven't dealt with for a long time, we've all been through it, but it has
4:33 am
urging everyone to take it easy, at least with school out today for most districts and many people on vacation, lower volume in the first place. danielle niles covering everything in studio, in house. danielle i don't get to see you too often in the morning here, it looks like winter storm that is a good warmup to winter for us. >> a little preview, right? a little test of how we handle it, eric. we are changing over to sleet in a lot of spots, all the pink you see here shaded on the map where we have the sleet pellets mixing in. it's i can't, who the south coast we are seeing the rain start to approach, it's sleet with snow mixed in, all the areas in pink, anything untreated the sidewalks, the bridges especially, just watch out for slick spots, you go up route 39 into the city of degrees. you go north of boston though,
4:34 am
where we have the snow mixing with sleet at times, about .75% snow and it's not like it's a cumulating at a fast pace, we have snow in southern new hampshire, there is the actual changeover to sleet. so, question is where we do go from here? that rain snow line continuing to work up i can't lock the south coast, the rain is going to come down hard. with the sleet and changeover a sloppy mess, by late morning, still seeing some areas of sleet mixed in north and west of boston, boston itself making that changeover, temperature 37 degrees by 10:00 a.m. noontime just a couple leftover pockets when you get across the far interior, stretching into the burke shears, rest of us areas of rain that will taper off to leftover showers as we head throughout the evening hours.
4:35 am
video you just tweeted out of the sleet pelting off the car. >> reporter: oh, yes, it's bouncing off everything here. we have all sleet at this time, on our drive up here, hour or two ago, it was a little bit of mix of snow and sleet, it is hitting my face, temperature right now 33 degrees, and the sleet is a huge concern to us because it is getting icy out here. what little snow we did have is still mixed with some of that sleet, so it's more of an icy snow fall here, we are going to expect it to stay sleet as temperatures hover around the freezing mark. the roads are ice covered at this time with snow underneath, so it is slick but we did have many snow plows and salt trucks, this is middlesex road right outside the mall, pheasant lane mall, this is the entrance ramp to route 3. so that is where we are, in
4:36 am
what kind of precipitation we are experiencing. for now it is all sleet. sending it back to you in the studio. >> some people were wearing shorts a few days ago, right? it is such an influx of temperatures, now there is a big rush to get ready. >> people shopping for shovels, snow blowers, salt and sand, nicole jacobs is live in andover with what people are saying about the first storm of nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, chris and kathryn, the first one out is not too bad to stand out in. certainly here on the roadways this is interstate 93, it is slippery out there, you see cars going at a pretty normal clip, but this storm perhaps is not as normal as what we know in new england and residents are taking note. >> on a scale from 1-10 this one may be pretty low. >> i had people here at 8:00 in the morning, it was kind of
4:37 am
winter's first appearance is all the same starting with the ice melts, up to now has been virtually untouched. >> i would say a couple would be excite bad that. >> nothing like what we know can forget? >> i was really hoping, no one wanted to shovel. >> a little elbow grease can wear down the best of them. >> i broke two shovels last year. >> that wasn't the only thing to break, although this year the t has a deicy remedy for the third rail. >> if you take a flight during the winter and they spray the wings with a deicing chemical. >> no need to worry about the amount of energy exerted in this storm, plenty will be left in the tank for winter as we really know it. taking another live look, you see a couple plows coming through, the plows aren't
4:38 am
so it is slippery out, you want to give yourself some extra time and take it easy even though we know things can get much worse and we expect them to at some point, chris and kathryn, back to you. >> thank you very much, nicole. this one might not pass the biggest punch but timing is everything. >> i had a couple trouble spots coming down certain hill areas and braking at stop lights, good thing to keep in mind. remember you can always track this storm and any other storms with cbs boston weather app, you can get weather alerts and see the live radar. thank you for being with us, coming up the store that wants to pay you for your unwanted gift cards. the changes chipotle is making to its food to make sure you don't get sick. hackers hit a local credit union, did they target your bank, too? here is a live look with
4:39 am

4:40 am
year, old sets based on things like "star wars" are the most popular. americans are expected to buy $26 billion in gift cards, if you got one for a a store you don't like, target wants to help. the retailer will boy unwanted gift cards from hundreds of different stores and companies for a reduced price, so for example, you can exchange $100 wal-mart card for l $85 at target. it's not terrible if you don't want that gift card, chris and kathryn. >> better than nothing, right? >> better than not using it. >> did you guys get any gift cards you continue want. >> so i did well. >> thank you very much. this is the first storm of the season, i know my drive in was a little treacherous, you too? >> there were a couple slick spots, coming in from the city it wasn't too bad i think it's warming down here, but eric
4:41 am
is it looking up there, eric? >> reporter: just a wintery scene, you have to think of all the dpw crews, they were wait to go use all the equipment. coming to the first snow and sleet, a sloppy one across the covered streets, it's harder to move some of the sleet from the surface, basically what we are looking at, sleet and freezing rain, not a lot of pure snow with this particular storm system, snow a little bit pretty, snowball fight, easier to drive on the snow than the ice also. we are looking at this morning is too much warm air above our heads melting our snowflakes, it's cold here at ground level, teens and 20s across the interior, as it falls it's into an ice pellet, the sleet has a
4:42 am
off the jacket, you are in this part of the state. farther east, this is too much warm air altogether. much lower impact in that end of massachusetts. so it's a warmup to winter after all the warm air that we saw last week. daniel niles is -- danielle niles is tracking all the snow and sleet. it feels like wasted precipitation, this could be all snow, not much you can do with sleet. >> it's never fun when it pelts you in the face, it's one of those things. >> exfoliating though. morning. great so to have you up, good morning, we are tracking the impact on the commute here, this morning early it is going to be the highest impact as we continue to make that transition over, we are going to see a lesser impact through the late morning and the afternoon. there will still be areas of sleet across the interior, in general, the snow and sleet
4:43 am
coating of 2 inches for the most of us, so current radar shows a lot of pink on the map and that is the sleet eric was talking about. we've been making that transition over here in southern new hampshire. pockets of sleet on the cane and islands, we are seeing accumulation of that shop on the roadways, over the next i would say hour and a half or so make that transition over to rain along the south coast. it's sleet but 29 degrees in the city of boston, there may be slick spots especially anything untreated showing snow from nashua to lowell, pamela guard injury is reporting sleet here. extending into the merrimack valley as well, still a few flakes missing in, the berkshires we may be doling with a little bit of freezing rain as we head throughout the late morning hours, temperature wise we are running in the 20s
4:44 am
the wind is gusty out there, wind gusts 29 miles per hour in the city of boston. the real feel is 19 degrees in the city, it's 12 degrees in worcester. so it is a chilly start, you want to be bundled up. still dealing with snow all the way back into the mid west, back down through iowa, and the cool low is moving and lifting northward during day. between now and mid morning, sweeping across southern new hampshire, changing over to rain, the rain is going to come down hard, so combined with a sleet, we may get a few clogged storm drains and puddles, localized flooding maybe in urban areas. noontime most of us make that changeover, concord new hampshire to than knock region may be mixed in with sleet, temperatures running in the 30s for most of us and a leftover
4:45 am
isolated outages can't be ruled berkshires and across worcester county, it will be isolated as that changeover. tomorrow is a quieter day, a lot of clouds around, there may be a few patches of drizzle early tomorrow morning, staying mostly cloudy but dry for the maybe a couple showers wednesday night into early thursday and then the skies clear out. so highed to do manage to climb into the low 40s for some of us, upper 40s in the cape tonight we drop back into the 20s to lower 30s, so a couple icy patches and tomorrow up around or just over 40 degrees again. new year's eve festivities right around 32 degrees, first day of the new year, chilly with temperatures in the 30s
