of homes, and impacted travel. it's friday, january 1st, 2016. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. thanks for joining us. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. another year has started across the u.s. with parties and no significant problems. hundreds of thousands in las vegas filled the streets. more than a million others crowded into new york's times square for watch the ball drop at midnight. other cities around the world marked the new year under a terror threat. don champion is here in new york with more on that. >> reporter: good morning. places like germany and belgium, the threat of terrorism led to cancelled events and even warnings for people to avoid large gather is.

germans ushered in 2016 under close watch. in munich, a different story. people there were told to stay away from two of the city's train stations because of a serious and em imminent threat by isis bombers. in brussels the official party was cancelled after the arrest of two men suspected of planning holiday attacks. some thought it was an overreaction. >> i think it's backing down to the threat of terrorism. i think we should stand up and just make everything happen. >> reporter: in paris, a city that saw two attacks from isis in 2015, celebrations were scaled back. france's defense minister tried reassuring people by greeting some of the 11,000 soldiers on duty yesterday. here in the u.s., the new york city police were also on alert. more than 6,000 nypd made sure the times square celebration

but in rochester in upstate, new york, the fireworks display was canceled after charging this man. documents allege lutchman was a i isis sympathizer. >> don champion for us here in new york, thank you. new year's eve celebrations in dubai had to get compete with a huge hotel fire. people stampeded trying to escape from the building. official say one person died from a heart attack and 14 others were injured. chris martinez has more. >> reporter: massive flames engulfed the address hotel, a luxury high-rise in downtown dubai and the united arab emirates. people inside said it was chaos. >> the heat was so dense outside.

people started to panic, crush crushing each other trying to get down the stairs and jumping over railings. i can't believe how fast it happened. >> reporter: the 63-story hotel is located near the burj khalifa. >> i used to live on the 32nd floor and spent new year's eve at the address. it's really the place to be. >> reporter: the fire broke out two hours before midnight. officials rushed to evacuate the skyscraper as flames ripped through the building, consuming at least 20 floors in a matter of minutes. but some residents say the alarm didn't sound right away. >> the alarm went off when the building was on fire. >> reporter: firefighters raced to contain the blaze. crowds could hear several explosions.

>> reporter: her son was shot to death in 2006. next wednesday would have been his 28th birthday. meteorologists expect more major flooding along the mississippi, ohio, and arkansas rivers, as well as their tributaries. david begnaud reports, the floods are blamed for at least 22 deaths and have left countless homes under water. >> reporter: the mississippi river is expected to crest in st. louis at 42 1/2 feet, nearly 12 feet above flood stage. john houser lives just south of st. louis in the city of arnold. >> we are just fighting the water and it's up to the red line right there. just trying to keep the pumps running and make sure the wall doesn't fail and hope the water goes down in a hurry. >> reporter: the floodwaters snarled traffic for miles. missouri's busy i-55 became the second major interstate to close

>> nowhere to go. it's water but if there is enough of it you can't do anything. >> reporter: statewide, more than 12 people have been killed due to the extreme flooding. it has washed away homes, highways. that is highway 141, and shut down water treatment plant. steve sangner is the executive of st. louis county. how many miles would you estimate is under water. >> it is very difficult to estimate that but near us right now there is seven miles under water where we are standing. >> reporter: that should be dry? >> reporter: the police chief says the worse is yet to come. >> we are at the point now the sandbagging is not going to hold it back. we are going to lose a hundred to 150 homes will be affected by the flooding, if not more. >> reporter: where i am standing this is usually one of the busiest intersections of st. louis county but with the

president obama and the first family rang in the new year in hawaii. he is on his annual two-week vacation there. on thursday, the president played golf with high school friend. he spent more than six hours hitting the links. the family wraps up their vacation on sunday. the u.s. government announced plans to open three new shelters to house an unexpected influx of unaccompanied migrant children. the shelters will be on federal property in colorado, florida, and new mexico. children in the shelters are mostly between the ages of 14 and 1. they stay about a month before it's decided whether they will be deported.
