good morning, everybody. six:00 on the nose. we're glad you're waking up with us on this january 9th. i'm kerry long with pamela and bringing us not a bad weather forecast for january. >> we're waiting on the snow. >> yes. >> and some wintery weather is moving through worcester hills and through the berkshires and that is where temperatures are freezing. baltimore, 40 degrees. any precip moving our way is in

couple of sprinkles. when the upper 30s and lower 40s for friends on the cape and islands. here as we move just outside of fitchburg, worcester, temperatures around freezing and that is where we had the wintery mix falling with a light coating on snow. potentially in the higher elevations in the worcester hills and the berkshires. satellite and radar picture, the bigger picture here. not a lot of from sip moving our way. we keep a chance of drizzle in there for this afternoon and areas of patchy fog. the visibility is reduced to 1 and 1 quarter of a mile or less in worcester, the only foggy condition i see at this time. and for the day planner, 44 degrees by 3:00 with overcast skies and, yes, a chance of evening. just a bit, we're tracking a completely different story for tomorrow. heavy rainfall and very strong winds. i will have more coming up in the seven-day. >> thank you. a boston police officer is expected to make a full recovery.

to make an arrest on drug charges and the is spect has a long record. our coverage begins with julie longcheck. >> i am at 33 -- [ indiscernible ] shot. >> okay, sir. on the way. help is on the way. >> reporter: the 9-year decorated veteran boston police officer was chasing down a dangerous drug dealer, a felon when he was shot in the leg. >> unprovoked, again, with our officers not having their weapons out from what i understand. >> reporter: members of the mattapan drug unit had 27-year- old grant hedley cornered in mount terrace in dorchester and they were about to bust him for dealing drugs while out on probation for selling drugs, police say. >> at first i thought it was firecrackers. when i heard two more gunshots i got up. >> i heard the police screaming police and told him to stop. he kept on running. >> reporter: commissioner evans said the injured officer tried to tie his newly issued turn quiet when a fill -- turny quiet when a fellow officer

he was doing. >> the suspect's father said he can't explain any of this. >> he's from good family, you know, we don't condone that kind of behavior. i don't know what he does when he's not here. when he's here, he's a pretty respectful kid. the police around here do a very good job protecting us. >> reporter: hedley is expected to be arraigned on monday. following his release from state prison last april, police say he went right back to dealing drugs. at boston medical center, julie longcheck, wbz this morning. >> despite what the family said, our iteam dug deeper into his past. there are 10 cases against him. most are drugs and weapons charges. in 2008, police labeled him a career criminal and he served several years in jail. he was released in april and on probation at the time of friday's shooting. the commissioner said the shooting was completely unprovoked and comes on the same day a gunman ambushed a

police everywhere say their job is more dangerous than ever. as wbzs jim armstrong reports, that upsets residents in the communities in need of protecting, too. >> it's kind of lard to deal with now. >> reporter: the gunfire on his street is a lot to take. the idea that someone would shot a police officer. >> it's pretty ridiculous, you know. because they're here to do their jobs, to protect people, and you know, some people are just sick and so and so. it's unfortunate that had to happen. >> reporter: boston police fear it's much more than that. >> the bottom line is, though, we are the targets. we are the targets and that is wrong. >> reporter: when they all gathered friday afternoon to speak about the morning shooting, talk quickly turned to the larger picture of what law enforcement feels has been a change for the worse. >> and it's become far too common for people to take shots at police officers across this country. and it can't be tolerated. the public has to step up. >> reporter: after one of their own was shot in the line of duty, boston's police

showed tremendous restraint. >> this individual just shot one of our officers and the officers were able to tackle him and not use deadly force to take him into custody. >> reporter: that level of restraint, he suggested, is getting harder to maintain. >> our officers lay their lives on the line every day they go out, and this job hasn't gotten easier. given what is going across the country. >> this has become a daily occurrence in this country. it can't stand. >> reporter: dbo of theop police officer's union and the police commissioner himself agree that a big part of the problem remains that there are too many illegal guns on the streets of boston. in boston, jim armstrong, wbz this morning. >> guns, drugs, and poverty can lead to violence, but there is another growing threat as well. in our next half hour, details on the police shooting with connections to isis. meanwhile, dangerous chemicals that triggered an explosion in north andover have been removed

if you're heading to the north. sunday, not so ideal and temperatures warm, a ton to 42 degrees and with the winter mix at first changing to rain and that gets window sunday and that is coming up in just a moment and here are the temperatures. forty degrees in boston; 39, norwood; 39, plymouth and once you're outside of 495, that is why temperatures are around freezing and a sprinkley mix. we have sprinkles and rain showers moving into lowell. from a mix to shirley, harvard, and clinton and into the 495 loop right now. holden, worcester, spencer, light snow showers could accumulate to a coating of snow and in some spotteds and slicken icy patches on the roads, too. the worcester hills and the berkshires. more snow showers are moving in to western parts of new england here and most will stay in northern new england.

areas of drizzle, overcast skies and not a fantastic afternoon but it could be worse and overnight, more drizzle, and fog and temperatures move in. 38 degrees and maybe a brief mix, but temperatures warm quickly tomorrow afternoon. and into the 50s. believe it or not. the record high in boston, 56 degrees and that is sets in 2000. we'll make a run for the record, 64; 66 plymouth and 57 degrees in new bedford. sunday morning through sunday evening, there is a high wind watch in affect and this is why up graded later on to a warning. gusts up to 60 miles an hour as the wind comes from the south and east. and that is going to make some travel difficult, too, especially along the coast in southeastern parts of massachusetts and mixed in with the heavy rain and tricky travel. hour-by-hour forecast starting you off this morning, sep a.m.

coast line and temperatures too warm to see winter weather and any slick spots this afternoon. that's okay, we can deal with it. the temperatures in the mid- 40s, overnight, tracking that drizzle and a couple of spotty showers pushing by 8 a.m. spreading across to the eastern parts of new england sunday afternoon. after that point in time, we have a chance to see an isolated thunderstorm imbedded within all of the steady showers. of the heavy downpours with the thunderstorms and some thunder. a little bit of lightning and not tracking severe weather, anything like that. all of the rain pushes out after midnight on monday. monday, setting us up for a pretty windy day and a colder forecast for you. here's the seven-day to break it down. 44 and drizzle today. sunday, 55. rainy, windy, monday 33 and the system, doesn't get much colder and back to 42 on tuesday. the next chance of snow coming in on wednesday and some light snow, kerry. >> fair enough. pamela. thank you.

weekend weather forecast. >> doesn't look like shine. overcast conditions out there right now, some areas of drizzle and we have a wintery mix in some spots. this is the deal. temperatures are well above freezing for boston to norwood to plymouth; how far, once you're outside of 495, the temperatures are around freezing and we have a wintery mix falling from the sky and some reports from princeton. of snow. it's been snowing all night for you and that is good news for the folks, right? fitchburg, 34 degrees; boylston dealing with a wintery mix and that mix is moving to the east. it's running into warmer air and eventually that makes changes to light drizzle for today. and be aware, we do expect slick spots to be around the next few hours in the worcester hills and berkshires. the biggest picture here on satellite radar shows not a lot heading our way. we'll keep snow showers in the forecast for more than parts of new england. otherwise, drizzily and areas of fog. the visibility reduced in worcester, 1 and 1 quarter of a mile or less.

the police are trying to pull over 27-year-old grant headily in dorchester. he started shooting and officers returned fire and tackled hedly. >> a philadelphia police officer suffered serious injuries and is expected to survive after he was ambushed sitting in the patrol car. the shocking scene was captured on officer video. the officer was shot three times. the 33-year-old's elbow was shattered and a major blood vessel in his arm was hit. and the gunman who shot that philly officer claims he was doing it for the islamic state walking right up to the officer's car and firing into the cruiser. as paula ebben reports, despite being shot 13 times, the police officer got out of the car and fired back. >> reporter: surveillance photos showed the gunman approaching his patrol car with the weapon drawn. another image shows the suspect reaching inside the vehicle,

hitting the 33-year-old officer three times. >> shots fired. i'm shot. i'm bleeding. >> the vehicle starts the chase despite being seriously injured. >> reporter: the suspect edward archer was arrested near the scene and later told police he shot the officer in the nam of islam. >> -- name of islam. >> according to him, he believes the police defend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the quran. >> they're executing search warranting in his property in upper darby and southwest philadelphia, not too far from where the shooting took place. >> reporter: authorities say archer has a criminal history and that the gun used was stolen from a philadelphia police officer two years ago. officer hartnett was seriously injured but is expected to be okay. police say there is no indication that the shooter was tied to a larger terror plot. and the suspect was treated and released into police custody and he is due in court next week. a man on the north shore is

the job she could not open the door for police. the officers say susan conway had a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit for driving. officers broke down the door to the apartment. the four-month-old baby girl she was supposed to be carrying -- caring for was fine and still, she's facing charges. a man is in custody for stabbing another driver in the case of road rage and police say the 32-year-old roman got into a fight with the other man and stabbed him at least five times. the victim was still in surgery as of last night. and we're getting new video of a mexican drug kingpin captured in a raid by mexican marines. el chapo did not appear to be injured and he was hiding out on the west coast of mexico and video shows the police putting

he's wanted in six states on drug remember changes. >> el chapo guzman will get a taste for real justice meted out in a federal courthouse in our country. >> u.s. law enforcement sources tell cbs they gave the tip that led to el chapo's arrest. and this morning, the woman who oversaw the state's regional child welfare agency during the tragic jeremiah oliver case has a new job. oliver, you may remember, disappeared for months after social workers missed several well-being checked. he was later found dead. this morning, the boston herald reports marshal roddy will oversee the office of dcf. she was area director for the office for a decade and including the timeframe of the jeremiah oliver case. and governor charlie bakeredded nearly $50 million in spending cuts as part of the plan to erase the state budget shortfall. the cuts will leave a number of

vacant and will include $10 million in medicade fee for service payments. the governor's projecting a $320 million deficit based on current revenue forecasts. the state's budget is more than $38 billion. and some mbta riders were parked at commuter rate stations could be getting money back. the globe is reporting the t and two contractors are about to settle a lawsuit by riders who were wrongly ticketed. the owner of vehicles ticketed on or before july 6th for unpaid fees at stations that used honor boxes will be eligible. the t shut down honor box system in july and is unclear how much riders will receive in that settlement. and secret service agents say they stopped a man plotting to steal one of the president's dogs. agents arrested scott stockard seen here in his washington, d.c., hotel room on wednesday. they found an arsenal of weapons and ammunition inside the truck.

light snow and a bit of a wintery mix, too and a light coating is occurring there and that is in the worcester hills and some slick spots and more snow showers moving that way and that will move into not other and east slightly throughout the course of the morning and into this afternoon. and most of the snow is out of here and for us, we're dealing with drizzle and overcast conditions. lows in the low 40s and upper 30s and pretty mild, mild enough that we will be experiencing all rain opposed to a wintery mix. the high temperatures topping off in the 50s and perking near record highs. the record in boston,ex degrees set back in 2000, and we're going with a forecast high of 54 and don't quite make it there. and the rain moves in and the wind picks up. gusting to the southeast and gusting at 60 miles an hour and there is a high wind watch out

. good morning, everybody. i'm yadires nova-salcedo. welcome to 70ro. at -- to centro. at fenway park, we see the red sox hitting home runs. did you know that close to the historic ball park sits a school that is hitting home runs in the lives of many inner city youth. the boston arts academy, boston's only public high school for the visual and performing arts. and serving over 440 students that reflect the diversity of boston's neighborhoods. and an estimated 42% are latinos and more than 94% of them go to college. to tell us more, with us this morning is abraham olivo, coordinator. >> good morning, yadires. >> this is great. you're hitting home runs in the yes. we definitely attempt to students. >> yes. >> and -- .

and i think that there is a perfect opportunity to talk to >> yes. >> and as a latino, you graduated from boston arts academy. >> i did. >> tell us about that? >> i enrolled in 2001 and graduated in 2005. it was a wonderful opportunity for me. i was seeking to improve musically on the piano, specifically, so, i didn't have prior experience in training. when i went to the boston arts academy, i had two hours every single day in my art. that is one of the wonderful things about the college, about >> yes. yes. >> that we have the opportunity to educate the artists for at least two hours every day and allowing the academics, science, math and humanities, all of the academic requirements and it's a wonderful opportunity for the children. >> and it's amazing, the fact that it's boston's only public high school and with -- for the visual and performing arts. >> yes.

>> and it's amazing that not a lot of people knew about it and artsa academy. >> it's a wonderful gem across the street from fenway park. to be a part of the community is amazing and also creating pathways for the artists and for students and their careers. when i went to boston arts academy, i was also getting training at berkeley college music and boston conservatory, the partnership that we have >> okay. >> and not only did i have the opportunity, but i was able to have a pathway to college. eventually, i graduated berkeley college of music on a full scholarship and became educational manager for the long running music foundation in new york, new york, and i returned recently to boston arts academy because i believe in the mission and its diversity. its mission artistically and academically to provide an all- outstanding artist scholar and citizen.

opportunity to pay it forward? you're excited about graduating from there and what that i gave you. >> yeah. >> and this is part of you being here today and making sure that other students. you, obviously, you want to reach out and run everyone watching the segment who would like to learn more. >> right. >> and it's important to highlight the latino community. that is important to you guys. >> yes. yes. it is. >> the reason why, not a lot of latinos know about our school and we want them to understand that it's a place that they can have an outstanding education and they can be someone. they can be an artist that they can advance and be outstanding latinos representative of our culture and our society. they can be a light. they can be a beacon of hope for a lot of latino families, as you know, sometimes they come from hard means. >> yeah. >> and it's hard in their upbringing, but to have an

official and -- visual and performing arts and it's free, and some schools you have to pay over $50,000 a year for this education. we have an outstanding curriculum and staff and faculty team. it's a wonderful place to be. >> what a great opportunity and it's important that you highlighted that and, obviously, 42% of them are already latinos and you would like for that number to grow? >> yes. definitely. we do and we want our community to be diverse. and latinos to shine along with the community. >> yes, your last-minute message to viewers out there who would like to get more information on the boston arts academy. >> i would encourage them to apply online at www.bostonartsacademy.org and we have all of the information provided there and it's very user friendly and, yeah. >> thank you so much for coming by and telling us about it. again, this is a hidden jewel that we didn't know existed and
