10:00 a.m., heavy rain in boston, low-to-mid- 50s for highs. afternoon, soggy. rainy by 3:00 p.m. and beyond that, we'll keep the showers in, plus the wind will be a big concern here. we have wind advisories as well as high wind warnings in effect for cape ann and cape cod. there, we could see wind gusts between 50 and 60 miles per hour. more on when the rain moves out of here in your forecast. kerry? >> all right, pamela, thank you so much. our top story this morning -- yes, you got it, powerball fever. it was the largest jackpot in the entire world, $950 million up for grabs. there was a $1 million winner in massachusetts. was it you? the ticket was bought at clash don wine on boylston street. the ticket had five numbers match but not the powerball number.

he was one of three people who rushed to save two young boys. he had seen them playing in his apartment complex across the street. the next thing he remembers, a frantic knock on his door for help. >> sometimes in these situation you don't think, you just acted. >> reporter: he jumped the fence to the academy pond. two men were in the water. >> they're struggling. >> reporter: they pulled the 9- year-old out. once he came to, he said one thin . " >> my friend is still there." >> reporter: there was no sign of the 12 years old. >> you couldn't see anything. too cold. >> reporter: the first good samaritan searched under the water. >> the first person in there, he went in and submergeddened himself. he's the hero. >> reporter: once firefighters arrived, they found the boy under the ice. both children were rush to the the hospital. pierce, who has kids of his own, was thankful he was not the only one who dove in. >> it's sort of hard. ed it really plunks you right there, but you know, it's good to know we have people out >> like these good samaritan

>> reporter: the good samaritan who searched underwater was taken to the later. the 9-and-12-year-old in the hospital and one is in critical condition. crews rush to the scene after a fire broke out in jamaica plain after 10:00 on an apartment building on center street. the smoke was so heavy, firefighters had to evacuate the building. one resident was taken to the hospital. people in a watertown apartment building are at home after a chemical scare. hazardous material team was called in after someone reported an odor. drain cleaner was mixed with another chemical that set off a reaction. fortunately, nobody was hurt. worcester police made an arrest in a deadly hit-and- run. jim smith has the details. >> why would you take off if you know you hit someone, and

>> reporter: mike and melissa were awoken around 3:00 a.m. it was a horrible scene in front of their house on west boilston street. a 56-year-old worcester man walk on the street struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. >> they had dark clothes but were lying in the street and emt was there. they put them on the stretcher in the plans and that's it. >> the victim was unresponsive at the scene and soon pronounced dead . >> you couldn't tell what was going on at first but then saw them put a -- person -- can't tell where we were, who it was or anything -- and into the ambulance. >> reporter: police are looking for a 2000 to 2002 gmc yukon, missing its passenger side mirror, with a broken headlight and other damage. >> it's just a terrible thing. i mean, i hope the family and i feel bad. >> reporter: a long-time

was struck and killed while walk home from work. police are asking for the public's help as they try to find that driver. in worcester, jim smith, wbz news. a munson man faces charges related to a hit-and-returns accused of destroying a truck with an excavator one day after he hit and killed a man in palmer on new year's eve. the truck has been excavated. now to the patriot in the playoff and we know who they will play next weekend. the patriots will host the kansas city chiefs next saturday afternoon at gillette stadium in the divisional round of the playoffs. the steelers blew a 15-0 fourth quarter lead and lost their qp, roethlisberger, for most of the period with a shoulder injury, but he rallied the team late as the bengals had two costly personal foul penalties to set up this 35- yard field goal.

the,lough academy. good samaritans pulled the younger boy to safety. emergency crews rescued the older boy and performed cpr. police, meanwhile, arrested a driver suspect in a deadly hit-and-run yesterday in worcester. 21-year-old vincent green of west boilston is charge with motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene, and other counts. green was driving recklessly when he hit a 56-year-old man on west boylston street and never stopped. that man died later at the hospital. boston police identified the officer shot and wound while trying to arrest a drug suspect. officer curt stokinger is recovering at the hospital and is a decorated veteran of the force. >> reporter: after a boston police officer with us injure in dorchester in the line of duty -- >> i'm at 33 [ indistinct ] terrace, shot. >> reporter: the department releases his name, 37-year-old curt stoker, nine-year veteran

there, in the higher elevations, you may see a wintry mix initially, then turning to rain as temperatures soar to upper 40s and lower 50s for highs. by 10:00 a.m., 49 in boston with the heavy rain from the southwest, chance of a thunderstorm afternoon today, with a thunderstorm chance through 3:00 p.m. most of us dealing with heavy downpours and wind. 5:00 p.m., most of heavy rain pushes off shore and by 8:00 p.m., the heaviest rain will be north and east of us for the rest of us, showers continue to taper off. overnight, we have a clear sky expected with a westerly wind allowing for much colder air to push through for monday morning. projected rainfall when it's all said and done by this evening, 1 to 2-inches of rainfall potential here, could lead to localized flooding, although we don't have flood watches for warnings at this time but stay tuned. we'll keep you updated this afternoon.
