we have breaking news tonight. a teenager hit by a stray's bullet -- stray bullet in his home and rushed to the hospital. >> officers are searching for the person who fired those shots. >> jim armstrong is at the scene. there are some clues here. >> reporter: just a hail of gunfire in the apartment complex behind me on pinegrove drive in brockton. police have stepped up at least 18 shell casings so far. i will take you to some video. this all happened a little after 8:00. apparently a person or persons unloaded a hail of gunfire into

complex here in brockton. bullets went into cars and at least one apartment where one bullet struck a 17-year-old boy standing in his own kitchen. the bullet hit him below his right shoulder blade. he was taken to boston medical. that's where he is at this time. some terrifying moments for him and neighbors. we spoke to one man, his wife said she heard what sounded like ongoing fireworks in the parking lot. the husband said that's gunfire. he goes out to find the passenger window of his truck shot out. a bullet casing in the backseat of his truck and the back tire of his wife's car shot out as well. >> i heard the shots and my wife thought it was fireworks. i said no, that's bullets. i heard maybe seven or eight. there was glass all in the ground. tomorrow, i have to get the window fixed. my wife has a bullet in her rear passenger

i have to go fix that. >> reporter: that man tells us he has lived here in this apartment complex for the past 17 years and been in brockton for even longer. he says he has watched the situation not just here in all of brockton in his words deteriorate over the past couple years. again, only one person injured. regardless of all the bullets that seemed to fly through the complex, only one person was injured by a bullet that went through his kitchen wall and hit him in the back. he is being treated for what are believed to be non-life- threatening injuries. the gun man or gun men are still on the loose. police are hoping to get them in custody soon. tonight, we have our eye on the storms as temperatures tumble. a mix of snow and rain is on the way. >> and that could mean a tough commute tomorrow night. difficult timing. eric fisher is tracking the storm. it already feels colder out there. >> reporter: we were well in the 50s at this hour yesterday.

the colder air has certainly arrived. we are tracking an alberta clipper. this is going to cruise through the great lakes, race into new england and arrive here late tomorrow. no issues, just cold with less wind to start the day. clouds increase as we head toward lunch and it's after 2:00 in the afternoon that we start to get our first showers. just about everyone will be seeing style. commute times, the main concern is we get a few of these areas moving through where we have heavy snow, low visibility and temperatures dropping as we head through tomorrow night. i think the main idea is earlier is better if you are leaving the house. 1-3 inches near boston. more on this and the cold that follows coming up. developing now, firefighters rescue a father

in mattapan. wbz is live. julie, investigators just confirmed what sparked the fire. >> reporter: number one, they believe it was accidental. number two, they believe it began with a piece of dental equipment. this home tonight, a complete loss. the fire at the well-known dental office in mattapan quickly went to for alarms. >> once they opened up the roof and stuff it was going pretty good.>> it seemed like the elderly gentleman hoarded everything so it was difficult getting around.>> reporter: when fire crews first arrived, it was a race against time to get everyone out. >> the father met the fire companies out front. he appeared to be dazed and confused. >> reporter: surveillance video shows walter holman, an elderly dentist run out of his home and practice and around the corner to try and save his son who was

give him cpr. >> reporter: officials say the sun was in cardiac arrest one they found him. he and his father were rushed to an area our hospital -- area hospital and a firefighter suffered an injury when he fell through the floor. stacy thomas owns a nearby gas station and has known the family for years. >> to have him be in here this morning and be talking to him and then this afternoon for this to happen, it's not a good feeling. i just hope their son is going to be okay. >> reporter: we are told that son is in pretty tough shape tonight. fortunately, his father and that firefighter will be okay. julie want check, wbz news. are developing news. a security breach at brigham and women's hospital. hackers broke into an employee's email account and

information of about 1000 patients. information. the hospitals are reaching out to patients and insisting that hackers did not get health information. a knife wielding robber in a free-for-all with a clerk who ends up pulling out an even bigger knife. this fight in fall river went on for more than a minute. the thief did get away with a couple hundred dollars. he is still on the run tonight. you see the clerk with that big knife. he suffered some minor injuries. all new tonight, looking for love and instead getting roughed up and robbed. a police warning about a dangerous twist on online dating. >> reporter: the attacks have been here at the laurel street apartments. the first happened last monday and the second just yesterday. men looking to meet a woman from a dating app showed up and instead they were robbed and

it's called me to me and the up most it can connect to two people near you to chat and share interests. >> i see everybody going on those things just to see if people are cute or not.>> reporter: apps like that are getting more and more popular but police in worchester said wine one man try to meet up with a woman here at this apartment complex on laurel street, he got something he didn't expect. >> this individual was accosted by two males. he was robbed of his cell phone and assaulted. >> reporter: than, less than a week later, different man, same app and same fake female profile, same scenario. >> showed up at the apartment and was accosted by two males, attacked, attempted to have his phone robbed but he fought back and he was subsequently stabbed in the test -- chest. >> reporter: both men were jumped in the lobby late at night. >> it's really crazy because i can't believe stuff like that

>> reporter: people in the building say they normally feel warning out. >> these two perpetrators are willing to do this to somebody. >> reporter: this is a scary reminder about blindly putting your trust in your heart in the internet. >> i used to go on those to see how cute guys were sometimes from the websites. i know how dangerous it can be. >> reporter: police say if you must meet someone from online, make sure it's in a public place. that stabbing victim has non- life-threatening injuries. kate merrill, wbz news. the boston pride hockey player battling for -- is sending out this message to fans and supporters. >> i'm back. >> that is denna laing speaking from her hospital bed.

with the message some big news today, talking now. denna laing still faces a long recovery but seeing this is great news. very helpful 10 days after her injury. a boston police officer shot on the job is out of the hospital and the accused shooter is going to stay behind bars. prosecutors say office -- the officer saw hedley dealing drugs and was trying to stop him when he shot officer kurt stock ledger in the leg. hedley began yelling at today's hearing. kurt still conjure was released last night and hedley is being held on $1.5 million bail. the man accused of killing baby bella pleaded not guilty and his lawyer says new evidence proves michael mccarthy didn't do it. he argued that two autopsies

death and the autopsy shows no signs of broken bones or trauma. prosecutors say bella's mother, who is also facing charges, says she saw mccarthy be the girl to death. >> -- bricks of heroin are worth $3 million on the streets and they have been seized in a drug bust. police say the 120 bricks were laced with fentanyl. they also to $20,000 in cash from that home. the two people accused of selling it are now behind bars. president obama is preparing his final state of the union address and a nine- year-old boy from syria will be a guest in the house chamber. he lost his arms in an attack at a refugee camp and his three siblings were killed. the boy wrote president obama a letter asking the u.s. to let more syrian refugees into the country. you can see the state of address tomorrow right here on wbz at 9:00.

toward cleveland and continuing to track east while we sleep. it will arrive tomorrow afternoon. in the afternoon, we are dry. we head toward the afternoon and we will rise into the 40s as the snow breaks out by the end of the school day to the west. here is a look at the hour by hour. clouds will start to thicken up and after 2:00, we start to see develop. i think rain toward the south coast, cape and islands but many will see snowflakes. the main concern is during the evening timeframe, we will get a couple of these squalls pushing through. that creates hazardous travel. also, temperatures will fall back. everything gets icy. the main idea for tomorrow is the earlier, the better. then, everything ones down by the time we wake up wednesday morning. in terms of snow totals, up to

north and west, up to 3 inches. that includes southeastern new hampshire but excludes the valley area. things will ramp up as we head evening. we are on a low impact by 4:00. by 6:00, we start to ramp up and then we have our most difficult troubles. the high temperatures making the low 40s and southeastern parts of the state. that's why you are looking at rain. wind also a factor tomorrow. after a calm start, it starts to best out of the south, southeast. that makes it a little more uncomfortable blowing that snow around. then, the wind turns to the west on wednesday ushering in a lot of cold. a blustery day. probably, your most uncomfortable they of the week. the weekend, we are watching a storm system moving in. it's still a little too early for details but i think it will bring a mix of rain and wet
