>> that's a good way to put it snow is moving through. nice to see the roads are more wet than icy. i saw a lot of crews pretreating trying to get out ahead of it. the rain south and east of brockton, anywhere north and west it's the snowflakes. we are watching the snow press into the boston area. snowing in newton and needham, westward to worcester. heavier snow in franklin. someone manage wrentham saying a coating on the ground of wet snowfall. approaching an inch in parts of worcester county and an inch in northeastern in connecticut. bottom line is that we have the snow flying out there. some people may be celebrating. wachusett mountain 25 degrees. temperatures are falling back. we are below freezing west of boston for the most part. a big drop in temps later on tonight. anything wet will get icy.

most of the initial batch is over at 10:00. one more area of snow showers moves through midnight and this line is the cold front. as that passes after midnight, the wind will pick up and the temperatures will drop to the teens by tomorrow morning. a coating to a couple of inches of snow. north shore, boston, south shore a coating to as much as one inch out of this one. this is what we get out the door tomorrow. teens to 20 degrees and winds gusting 45 miles per hour. wind advisories in effect. we will take a look at that and a weekend storm to keep tabs on. >> thanks so much. a look at the roads. this is the southeast expressway and you can see lots of red lights there. wet roadways and things are moving. turning to the maps you see a lot of red around the boston area. slowdowns on all the major roads getting out of the city.

you can see the conditions boston drivers can expect the next few hours. tonight. iran is holding ten u.s. navy sailors and two small boats tonight after they had mechanical problems and then drifted into iranian waters. the pentagon is saying iran has assured the u.s. that it will quickly return the sailors and the boats safely at some point. tonight state police are trying to figure out which driver went the wrong way on 128 causing a serious crash before 4:30 this morning. a car south on 12 north crashed into another in lexington. both drivers seriously hurt, taken to the hospital. police can't say which driver was going the wrong way. the crash shut down three lanes of 128 for several hours. a violent knife battle in fall river caught on tape. a thief pulled out an 8-inch night inside a convenient store

bigger knife. the thief made off with about $200 but the police arrested jose sanchez a short time later. now to a wbz exclusive. a woman dies hours after she was revived from a heroin overdose. there could be questions for the hospital that treated her. the woman was revived after an accident and transported to the e.r. she was sent home from the hospital with a prescription for oxycodone. hours later she was dead. as christina hager tells us, police are investigating. >> reporter: from this salisbury home sunday morning, a frantic 911 call from a man saying his girlfriend was unresponsive. >> is she breathing? >> no. >> reporter: it was gretchen fordham. >> they are on the way. >> i believe he began cpr but to no avail. the victim was transported to the hospital where she was

>> reporter: now police and investigators with the d.a.'s office are looking into whether she died from the opiate based painkillers doctors gave her after treating her for a heroin overdose. it was on 495 in merrimack fordham crashed her car the night before. she charged her with driving under the influence of drugs, the second offense. because she needed medical help, instead of taking her into custody, she went to the hospital where police say she was given a heroin o.d. broken wrist. doctors sent her home with an oxycodone prescription. on the way back to her home, she stopped at a 24-hour prescription. so, just after recovering from a heroin overdose, she walked in the door with a fresh bottle painkillers. within hours, that frantic call.

toxicology tests to pinpoint the cause of death, gretchen's friends tell us one thing is certain, she is the last person any doctor should have given opiates to. christina hager, wbz news. the first votes are getting closer. hampshire primary. ted cruz is hoping a last minute blitz will earn him late votes in new hampshire. he held a second amendment rally at gun range. it didn't go as planned as twice hecklers joined cruz to interrupt him. tonight he is hosting a town meeting in londonderry tying it into the state of the union address. trouble for hillary clinton in both new hampshire and iowa. bernie sanders may be extending his lead in new hampshire and pulling ahead in iowa as well.

first campaign trip to new hampshire. the former first daughter, expecting her second child spoke at events in concord, new hampshire and portsmouth and spoke on her mother's plan to expand early childhood education. paula? david, congressman seth mol ton will have a special guest with him when president obama delivers the final state of the union address. a 9-year-old syrian refugee chamber. he lost both of his arms in an attack on a refugee came' that killed his siblings. the boy wrote to president obama asking him to allow more refugees into the united states. wbz and cbs will carry the state of the union live. scott pelley will anchor our coverage at 9:00. breaking news from the new england patriots and it involves one of the stars chandler jones.

>> reporter: paula, thank you. we have learned from the patriots that chandler jones was hospitalized on sunday and released on the same day. now, there are no details on why jones was in the hospital but hopefully we will be able to figure that out or what he was treated for. this video is chandler jones on the practice field yesterday. he reported to work on time yesterday and participating in the meetings and practices since then. he did miss the pat's last game with a toe injury but has taken part in the team's workouts since then. on sunday, patriots say chandler jones will be ready to go on saturday when thy take on the -- when they take on the kansas city chiefs. that is the latest at cbs. we hope to have more on chandler jones in sports.

and boston and inside of 128. temperatures are below freezing from about 495 west. in boston we are at 36 degrees. the colder air will funnel in. anything wet will freeze up. the main cold front that we are tracking is not bringing the snow right now. it's on this squall line that we are tracking through central new york. that moves in after this, around midnight. then the winds follow the cold front. here is the hour by hour. we have the snow that continues to move through you this the next couple of hours. cape island, south coast mainly rainfall there. maybe a few wet flakes mixing in, especially later on this evening. then here comes the cold front around midnight. that will sweep through with another coating of snow for many towns and then we usher in the colder air and the strong wind gusts that will follow. that's what we are left with tomorrow. all the snow will be gone. most towns a coating to two inches. isolated total up to three possible. a coating to one along the water's edge including the north shore, boston and south

two people rushed to the hospital after they were hit on beacon street at the corner of tremont place. these are live pictures right now from the scene. we know three cars were involved in in the crash. what we don't know is how badly injured the victims were. three people hit. the cars involved in the crash still there. police are investigating and of course moments ago we told you a pedestrian was struck in roslindale. mayor walsh says they cannot stop a pipeline planned for west roxbury. the city went to court to challenge the plan to build the pipeline but the federal judge ruled against the city and boston will not appeal. powerball is now up to $1.5 billion. the prize has been growing since the beginning of november and as the cash piled up over the last two months the lottery has been making a lot of money. the mass lottery alone sold
