>> i am kathryn hauser we appreciate you being here this wednesday january 13th. we had snow overnight but it's about the cold and wind this morning. >> it's going to be gusty. it is you guys out there. so yes there's slick spots you will encounter. anything untreated the sidewalks driveways and main roads doing okay. but a wind advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. today. west wind will gust up to 45 miles per hour. isolated gusts to 50 not out of the question. we are gusting to 40 from providence to nantucket and the vineyard. 30-mile-per-hour gusts in boston bedford providence and that's a biting wind adding the chill to the air. the real feel is only 5 degrees in worcester and 14 in boston and this is going nowhere during the day today. the temperatures are in the 20s and that's why anything that is untreated will be a little slick. most of us saw a coating as much as 3 inches in spots and the snow is done pushing out the outer cape. clearing from behind and sunshine coming out today. we don't rise all that much.

through lunchtime and real feel running in the teens and blustery and cold for the ride home. i am keeping an eye on a weekend storm. details coming up. let's get you on the roads. traffic and weather together. good morning. >> reporter: some of you may have slippery rides on secondary roads but we are hearing about no weather related issues on the major routes. look live over 93 southbound a smooth ride from andover. no reported backups. major roots trouble free. expressway northbound route 3 clear from hingeham and 24 north and 95 north look like speed limit rides. kathryn. >> thank you in we are following a developing story. 10 u.s. sailors being held by iran. they will be released any time now. the sailors were on two small boats in the the persian gulf when one of the boats broke down. they drifted into iranian waters and were picked up by iranian guards who suspected them of spying. an iranian official says the situation is being resolved and

free as early as this morning. this morning, we are learning patriots defensive end chandler jones was taken to the hospital following a medical emergency this weekend. the patriots tell us jones was hospitalized on sunday and released the same day. there are no details on why he was in the hospital or what he was treated for. this is video of jones practicing with the pats on monday. the team says he reported to work on time that day and has participated in all meetings and practices since then. meantime, bill belichick was sporting a black eye under hisfooty at practice. it's unclear how it happened. and tom brady was jogging okay. the pats qb says everyone is aware what's at stake on saturday. >> i see the ramifications to a loss are differentia lot different so you don't have next week to get it right. so we work hard to get to this point and we will have to have our best week a great team we are playing. >> we have you covered from

begin with a 90 minute edition of patriots game day at 2. patriots and chiefs kick off at 4:35 and steek around for the post game show. state police trying to figure out which driver went the wrong way rather on route 128 causing a serious crash. we told you about this yesterday morning a car traveling south on 128 north crashed into another vehicle in lexington. on the electrickington burlington line. both drivers were seriously hurt but police are working to figure out which one was going the wrong way. that crash shut down parts of 128 for several hours. meanwhile in boston police investigating a crash right near the statehouse. a driver reportedly hit a pedestrian and a number of cars near beacon street and treemont place. the pedestrian and driver were taken to the hospital. a deadly accident in roslyndale. 588-year-old woman was hit and killed on washington street. so far no charges have been

another taste of winter causing dangerous conditions on the roads. first the snow fell and a blast of cold air starting to turn everything into ice. crews have been working through the night to sand and salt the major roadways. susie sometimeel is live. hopefully the roads are looking better for the commute. >> reporter: they are chris. there. last night's commute was challenging. you can see they got a little bit of snow here in worcester but the drive home last night was really tough for drivers. this morning with the feel like temperatures in the single digits, there's a little -- they are still a little worried about ice. it's the first real return to winter in worcester and the conditions have drivers feeling. >> not used to it yet. >> reporter: ashley carpenter tried to make her way up eastern avenue during the evening commute, but had to give up and turn around. >> the main roads are wet but not these side roads. it's no good. >> reporter: staying true to her character another nature

heaviest snowfall to hit western massachusetts. this time it was the evening one. leaving drivers spicking -- spinning their wheels on the way home and stuck in long lines of traffic on major roadways. >> it's unsafe and it's not a joke. you can't walk up it. >> reporter: roads were mostly clear by the end of the night but it was cold so drivers remind themselves to keep their eyes peeled for ice. >> you have brakes and try not to use them as much because you will slide anyways. >> reporter: there is that wind advisory in effect as danielle mentioned with gusts up to 45 miles an hour and you can feel it pushing you around out here. we know there's a potential winter storm this weekend so we know the weather this season is just getting started. live in shrewsbury. we have details about the first homicide of the year. police say a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in east boston early sunday morning. it happened on falcon street and anyone with information

and this morning, a boston firefighter is recovering after being hurt while battling a fire in mattapan. that firefighter suffered minor burns fighting a fire at a two- family home on cummings highway last night. 7 people have condition dis-- have been displaced. president obama wrapped up the final state of the union address and spent sometime defending himself and pointing out his accomplishments. weija jiang takes a closer look. >> reporter: into that's why i stand here at confident as i've ever been that the state of our union is strong. >> reporter: in his 7th and final state of the union address, president obama aimed to set the legacy and focus on the future. >> the future we want all of us want opportunity and security for our families, all that is within our reach. >> reporter: the president spoke less about policy and more on changing washington admit egg failed to bring the parties together.

washington. new numbers in campaign 2016good news for donald trump. a poll shows he maintains a double digit lead over the rest of the republican field. he is 17 points ahead of his closest rival. texas senator ted cruz. on the democratic side the same poll shows hillary clinton lead over bernie sanders shrinking. clinton is 7 percentage points ahead of sanders nationally. clinton is getting help from her family on the campaign trail. former president bill clinton returns to new hampshire today for three campaign events. yesterday, their daughter chelsea made several stops in the state. just a few hours left to get the power ball tickets. and power ball fever is spreading. not just across state lines but across the u.s. border. nicole jacobs is live with more on the power ball craze going on. hey nicole. >> reporter: hey there even canadians are crossing the border trying their hand at the1.5 billion dollars. and perhaps that is lucky location last week it produced

great to have you with us it's 35:14 right now. we have some snow-- it's 5:14 right now. we had snow to deal with last night overnight. and causing slick spots but it's more about the cold this morning. >> yeah and the wind. >> the wind is quite gusty you guys. so yeah absolutely. main roads not too bad but the secondary roads and anything untreateded is slick. wind is gusting between 20 and 40 miles per hour. 40-mile-per-hour gusts in providencetown as of last check. 31 miles per hour boston. so the wind is the big story today. maybe strong enough to cause isolated outages or damage. isolated through the course of the day today. and the real feel is only in the single digits and teens right now and that will stay that way from start to finish. temperatures are in the 20s. we may come up around 30 in few communities today. but because we are below freezing, that's why there may be a few slippery spots out there especially.

it doesn't go anywhere. right on through midday lunch hour still running in the teens single digits worcester hills southern new hampshire and through the evening commute, that real feel will drop into the single digits all the way back down to the cape. that's what you want to address- - dress for. it could be worse. there's single digit readings above and below zero and it's 11 below zero in suddenbury canada. we won't get into that arctic air. but there will be a little rebound in temperatures as we head into the end of the week. storm center itself still producing areas of moderate to heavy snow in maine pulling away from new england today. so it's when the sun breaks out and we will be in for a good amount of sunshine during the day today a little front ride over us a disturbance tomorrow morning a cloud may produce a stray flurry and then the sun breaks out less wind tomorrow. that's the key. so it won't feel as cold. as we head into friday end of the week is quiet but the clouds after sunshine in the morning will start to increase on friday afternoon and evening. especially those clouds come

are watching for the weekend a couple different ingredients moisture from the gulf of the midwest. question is can these combine and where do they do that. the rain snow line is uncertain at this time. it looks like the time frame of biggest concern is saturday morning through the afternoon it should wrap up as we head into saturday evening. and it's gone by the time we get to sunday as well out in the canadian maritime so it's one to watch in terms of snow berkshires and maybe worcester county southern new hampshire. the closer you get to the coastline the better chance we have rain but a gusty wind with the storm this weekend today's highs up 20ers low 30s. tonight in the teens. and -- 20s low 30s. tonight in the teens. temperatures around 40 and then 30s this weekend again that storm potential on saturday could be rain at gillette mixing with wet flakes.

shipwreck in the indian ocean. this is the second shipwreck they will found since searching for the plane. it's 5:19. today massachusetts could move one step closer to legalizing marijuana for recreational use. a joint committee of the statelegislature will debate a measure that would make the state regulate marijuana the same it does alcohol. supporters say it would free up police to investigate more serious crimes but opponents claim marijuana can lead to harder drug use. a boston city council says no more. >> he proposing a rule to let some city residents get out of shovel. jon keller looks at the plan and the reasons behind it. >> reporter: good morning. one the first obligations any elected official is to attend to the needs of elderly constituents and it's good at this timeo jackson was -- titojackson was on the responsive to the news a woman sold her home after she was

city for not shoveling last wint are's record snowfall off her sidewalk. jackson told the globe he "wants our eld heers to be able to stay in the city" today he will file a ordinance exempting anyone 60 or older from the rule requiring home owners to clear their walks shortly after a storm ends. well, as somebody closing in on that age i have mixed feelings feelings. for starters i am perfectly capable of shoveling my walk and don't relish the prospect it seems seems unfair to make other taxpayers pay to do it for me i know others over 60 who enjoy the exercise and who will take care of the shoveling if this ordinance passes? some cities like cambridge maintain a list of shovelers for hire by those who can't do it.

but the good news is he is back at practice and he is okay. head coach bill belichick sported a shiner and we don't know how he got it but he said he will live. and you should see what the just kidding. belichick had the troops on the practice field for a second straight day and in full pads. gronkowski didn't participate. julian edelman was sprinting good during warmups. brady was out there and seemed to be moving okay on the bulky right ankle. we know brady is an intense competitor on the field but what is he like with the teammates this time of year? >> he think they get a full dose of it year-round so i would say i am not the easiest guy to play with and i think there's a lot of high expectations and i try to put pressure on everybody to get

for all of southern new england. current gusts between 20 and 40 miles per hour even a few higher gusts 43 miles per hour in thvineyardch this is strong enough we may -- vineyard. this is strong enough we could see isolated damage and outages because of the wind. real feel is 5 defees in worcester only 14 -- degrees in wore ster -- worcester and only 14 in boston. the wind make it feel colder. so it's hats and gloves day with a real feel still running in the teens as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. even single digits. the skies are clearing out and there's been a few leftover flurries out over the cape and islands. those will come to an end. so a few slick spots on anything untreated from the snow that fell last evening and night. sun is out and mainly sunny through the day but the real feel again only in the teens. through the midday lunch hour that's what you want to dress for. cold and blustery. still in the mid-20s with the sunset at 4:34. i am keeping a close eye on the weekend.

iran's revolutionary guard determined the u.s. sailors entry was not intentional. nor breaking news. -- more breaking news. two suicide female bombers attacked. 10 people are dead and a dozen wounded. officials believe the attackers may have crossed the border from nigeria toa few days ago. and new overnight, turkey detained three russians in a raid on suspended isis militants. the raid comes hours after a suicide bomber attacked the popular tourist spot in istanbul. that bomber had pledged allegiance to isis. the explosion killed 10 people. 15 others were hurt. lawyers for bill cosby will be in a massachusetts courtroom this morning. they are asking a judge to seal records related to a civil defamation suit filed by 7 women who say he sexually assaulted them decades ago. cosby's lawyers say the plaintiffs sought invasive and intimate details about the actor's medical and sexual history. lawyers for the women say that

cosby is not expected to be in court for the hearing. new details this morning about the investigation into sean penn's secret meeting with crug lord el chapo a spokesman for the mention can government is investigating to see if crimes were committed. spokesman says actions not people were being investigated. this morning we are learning defensiveman chandler jones was taken to the hospital following a medical emergency this weekend. patriots say he was hospitalized on sunday and released on the same day. no details on why jones was in the hospital or what he was treated for. this is video of him practicing with the pats on monday. the team says he reported to work on time that day and has participated in all meetings and practices since then. coach belichick was sporting a black eye under the hoodie yesterday. still unclear how it happened. but he said he will live. tom brady seemed to be okay jogging at practice as he continues to deal with the sprained right ankle.

>> reporter: good morning. so far better week on wall street. stocks slowly making up for last week's massive losses. dow dropped 117 points and even the nasdaq finished higher climbing 48 points the first increase this year. oil prices are plunging. so the bad news for energy companies but great news when it comes to gas prices. aaa says the national average 1.97. analysts thinks parts of the country could see a dollar a gallon gas. imagine that. and it looks like self-driving cars need human help. california department of motor vehicles released reports from 7 companies testing prototypes self-driving cars google tested cars on 400,000 miles of road and humans jumped in 350 times. and nissan they tested about 1500 miles and said humans took

results from the wind today. also creates a bite to the air. real feel is 5 in worcester. 14 in boston and taunton. 10 from lawrence down to falmouth. so it's not going anywhere. and the temperature itself is running in the 20s. so we are below freeing. that's why any of the snow -- freezing. that's why any of the snow that fell and leftover flurries this morning there maybe slipperyspots on secondary roads and things untreated. today. real feel will stay in the teens and single digits because of the wind. this evening it will drop into the single digits below zero possible when you come into southwest new hampshire. we are in the 20s but it could be worse. we have subzero temperatures back across eastern canada. we won't get that cold but the wind will gradually subside during the day tomorrow. so our storms still producing a couple of flurries on the cape. those are done but moderate to even heavy burst of snow still lingering in maine. that continues the storm

and the wind lets up a bit tonight and into tomorrow. but what you will notice tomorrow is a lot of clouds around in the morning. some of those may produce a stray flurry or two. don't want to catch you off guard it won't amount to anything tomorrow morning and the sun breaks out. temperatures will still be on the chilly side but the wind won't be motherly as strong osight will feel better. on -- be nearly as strong but it will feel better. the clouds will increase out ahead of something we are watching for the weekend. disturbance with energy in the plains and moisture out of the gulf of mexico we have seen this before. how quickly will it come together and where does the storm really rapidly intensify. on saturday we will be mild enough to get periods of rain in eastern massachusetts and potentially mixed with snow across the interior. the whole thing would be gone bysunday so it looks like a saturday morning through the afternoon event. something to watch. gusty winds too and that may impact patriots game on saturday afternoon. biting wind today.
