>> i am chris mckinnon thursday january 21st danielle niles is here ants big question on everybody's mine the impact of the weekend storm. >> i think one of the biggest is from flight delays because of the impact of the mid- atlantic. for us at home it's not a block buster storm in terms of snow but we get residual delays so we are talking about the storm ramping up during the day tomorrow across the southeast moving north and that is saturday at 2 a.m. and even heading into saturday morning we are doing just fine snow arrives for us from south to north during the late afternoon and evening on saturday. and we will continue to ramp up the height of the storm for us comes saturday night. and then it wraps up by the time we get to sunday morning. until then we are pretty quiet. temperatures right now 15 in worcester. 22 boston and there's breeze out there so the real feel is running in the single digits and teens. and sunrise coming up at 7:08 this morning through the midday lunch still blustery feel. that's been the story all week. wind gusting occasionally 20 to 30 miles per hour today.

flights before the snow arrives. nicole jacobs is live at logan airport with more on that good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that is big travel weekend for patriots fans heading to denver for that afc championship. but anyone travel to or from anywhere along the east coast, the big question is just how early you can get out ahead of the storm. we have been hearing about it for days now. a winter storm moving up the east coast sure to affect north carolina virginia and washington, d.c. and maryland, philadelphia and new york. it will put a halt to travel plans for many as delays and cancellations have proven to be a ripple down effect. the mid-atlantic is expected to bear the brunt blizzard watches are on the books by the end of it the area could have feet as opposed to mere inches. airlines are take note of the track of the storm hoping to

police say they found the suspect at a nearby gas station. also this morning, police investigating a deadly crash in framingham. a 25-year-old man was hit and killed crossing route the. 9. police say he was in the crosswalk and the driver did stop. no word on any charges. incredible video to show you this morning. look at this. a taxi cab bursting in flames in quincy. the driver manned to escape -- managed to escape and helped a pang jer struggling in-- passenger struggling inside the cab a nearby witness captured this video on the scene as crews rushed to put the flames out. an elderly woman was riding in the back seat and needed help getting out of the car. >> his only concern was her safety. and he was pretty heroic and took care of her needs before anything else and got her inside the building. so, she was very grateful to him. >> and thank goodness. fortunately nobody was hurt. in other news a patriots

player getting praise for a play off the field. he saved a stranger trapped in a car after a crash. now she is speaking out for the first time. susie steimle is live at gillette stadium with what she is saying. good morning. >> reporter: good morning kathryn. believe it or not, darius fleming caught some flak for the story gossip sites like tmz insinuated he might have made this up and that's why the woman he he rescued is speaking up to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves. with the instinct of an athlete darius fleming knew he couldn't hess state. >> the the smoke started to freak me out and so i was look i can't like tell the lady i will be right back you know. it was like get her out of here right now. >> reporter: on his way home from practice last thursday fleming saw a woman trapped inside a smoking car. he stopped to help pull her out. >> there was smoke coming from the front as it was smashed in. and then i started to try to kick open the passenger side

window when i saw someone approach and he gestured that you know he would kick the window open for me and he did after a couple attempts. >> reporter: the victim didn't want her identity revealed but she did want to make sure fleming was properly recognized. >> i am ever so grateful he was able to be there and pulled over and he was heroic in that way. >> reporter: she said she didn't know he was a patriots player at first. she was overwhelmed by the scene. fleming's teammates say they expect nothing less of him calling him a hero on and off the field. >> we have guys around here that understand you know he, the important things in life and they value the right things and i think you hit it on the head. it really speaks to their character. >> reporter: now this woman was not hurt in that accident butfleming pulling her out got hurt in the right calf and had to get 22 stipes and went onto

it is so cold in minnesota that people are literally freezing their pants off. a man in minneapolis is leaving frozen jeans all over town and he says he soaks the pants in water and sculpts them as they freeze and it takes less than 30 minutes. a sign of how cold it is out there. >> i don't know why i find this so funny. >> i was going to say don't spill on yourself because you walk outside and bam. >> a bad day right there. freeing the pants off. >> oh gosh. >> i didn't think it was cold enough here it would happen the last few days. >> no. >> the nearly as cold as what they experience i think it's hilarious too. how creative i love it. imagine driving by that. hey guys it's all about the storm this weekend of the we are talking about major concerns in the mid atlantic in terms of significant snow.

for us on the first flakes will arrive and develop on saturday late afternoon and this evening from south to north. the peak of the snow and wind comes in saturday night especially in southeastern massachusetts. keep the islands peak wind gusts saturday night into early on sunday. and it will all be winding down as it exits the region on sunday morning. and the high tide on sunday at 11 a.m. may be a concern particularly from the south shore back near sandwich and cape cod canal. 15 in worcester. 16 in nashua and 22 in boston. another cold start and bit of a wind and that wind is making it feel colder. the real feel is 5 degrees inworcester and teens for the rest of us. you have to be bendeled up as you step out. skies and clouds overnight cleared out. a few on the south coast a island. dressing for wind chills that will be in the teens, even through the afternoon because the wind again is going to be

that's what's giving us the blustery brisk feel. tonight, clear and blustery too. we drop back into the teens. so the wind chill tonight will be in the single digits. as we wake up for tomorrow morning's commute. during the afternoon tomorrow it won't be as wendy as the past several days. we will get some of the high thin wispy clouds that increase during the second half of the day. high temperatures will be up around 30 tomorrow. so where is our storm? it's going to be developing out along the gulf coast can and we have got snow from nebraska back down to areas of ice in arkansas so this is going to dive south develop into the storm center and intensify today. what's happens is it picks up moisture from the gulf of mexico. notice the shield of snow expands northward during the day tomorrow. into dc by late tomorrow into new york city by early on saturday morning. for us we are still dry and snow arrives from south to north and late afternoon and evening. and we may get mixing that goes on in the outer cape and nantucket depending on track.

be tapering off gradually from the mid atlantic to new england. over 48 hours out and we have wiggle room in terms of snowfall amounts. the early estimates putting a low impact event with little if anything over the border in new hampshire northern massachusetts and it's going to be a sharp cut off. and that's the trick here to figure out where exactly we are going to see the ramp down pretty rapidly in terms of snowfall amounts. could be a few inches from boston to the providence stretch. and the highest risk still of 6or potentially more inches is south coast and we may get less in the outer cape and nantucket. wind gusts projections 40 to 50 miles per hour. south shore to the cape there may be gusts isolated as high as 50 or 60 miles per hour on the cape. timeline overnight on saturday into sunday morning. and that will cause coastal concerns. minor coastal flooding significant beach erosion and sun comes out by sunday afternoon and it's quiet heading into the start of next

accepting 400,000 dollars of government benefits while claiming to be disabled and unable to work. during that time he was fishing on the show. in court yesterday, he agreed to pay more than $53,000 in restitution and is set to be sentenced in may. a possible change in college admissions. a harvard study is pushing reforms to look at student as a whole instead of a list of achievements and test scores. the report offers specific recommendations to change the admissions process including prioritizing quality not quantity on activities. it suggests pick a s.a.t. and a.c.t. optional and finally stop students from overloading on a.p. classes. >> a 3-year-old girl with lieu keenly yeah getting the ride of her life. more than 75 police cars from across the state showed up at her door yesterday.

weekend. so the tides are going to be astronomically high as it is. combined with an onshore wind and building seas, and we are talking about beach erosion which is likely up and down eastern massachusetts. and, minor coastal flooding. saturday high is 11:02 so either side may get flooding and erosion. and wind is going to shift to the north by the time we get to sunday morning. and there will likely be flooding particularly from scituate and hall back towards marshfield and sandwich into the cape cod canal. we will talk more about the storm in a little bit. 15 in worcester. 22 boston and it's cold. another chilly start with the boston. the skies aside from a few clouds on vineyard and nantucket staying clear staying mostly sunny and upper 20s to lunchtime but the real feel is in the teens with the wind gusting occasionally over 20 miles per hour clear and dry blustery through the ride home. traffic and weather together. >> reporter: not too bad out there right now.

bomb sniffing dogs inspected backpacks but found nothing. -like threats at more than a dozen schools on tuesday this threat was emailed to high school staffer. a patriots player getting praise for play off the field. he saved a stranger trapped inside a car after a crash. now, that woman is speaking out for the first time about this. susie steimle is live with what she is saying and the player got a little flak on this one. >> reporter: he did. he heard some negative things on gossip sites who thought he made it up to get attention. and that's why the woman involved in the crash said i will talk to the press to make sure we set the record straight because he deserves credit for what he did. and that's what his teammates say he is the kind of guy who would go out of his way to help a stranger that's what he did last thursday after practice. he was driving home and saw a car on side of the road smoking so -- so he stopped to see ifcohelp and realized a woman was trapped inside the car.

on both wbz and my tv38. state police confirming the refs for the patriots chiefs game left some footballs and hotel. police say that a hyatt employee called them and a trooper had to drive the footballs down to foxboro. the footballs to be used by the kickers only arrived a hour before the gamech ironically the embearaing mistake happened two days before the anniversary of deflategate scandal. boston mayor walsh wants to fight rising rents with tax bears -- tax breaks. he is considering incentives for property own aers who charges below market rents for tenants. details are being worked out including what would be considered below market and what the break would be but walsh says it's important to consider any measure that could prevent city residents from being priced out. stock markets worldwide taking a beating and today investors will look at europe

whether to keep interest rates steady. dow jones ended down 250 points yesterday. at one point it was down 550 points. oil prices are partly to blame and they are at the lowest point in 13 years. also asian markets fell today as oil prices continued to decline. 6:39 on your thursday morning. time for our daily talker. this morning hundreds of teachers in detroit were threatening to call out sick again. yesterday dozens of schools had to close when the educators didn't show up. >> the teachers are protesting deplorable physical conditions in school buildings. but many are questioning whether the move helps or hurts students. robi is here to explain good morning. >> reporter: good morning. 85 of the 100 schools were forced to close yesterday. cnn reports a little while ago teachers are expected back on the job today. it was a massive teacher sick out that is expected not to happen again keeping the

outside voices and freezing temps to call attention to the plight. here some of the things going on there. floorboards coming up in the classrooms. moldy ceilings falling down. mice running around and some buildings mushrooms on the wall. sick out meant 45,000 kids forced to stay home and that equals 91% of detroit's public schools having to close. teachers upset about pay cuts and district 515 million in the red and schools being are by a state manager. bills proposed to spend 700 million over the next decade and the mayor says teachers frustrations are legitimate and the solution is not to send kids home. is the right move by teachers to force action here? katie says no teacher bough take such action lightly let alone this many teachers they need to fix the schools immediately. and a viewer post a futile
