storm you can see a live image of the white house right now. doesn't look like there's snow yet but it's coming soon right now 23 states has some type of winter watch or warning good afternoon i am kathryn hauser. >> i am chris mckinnon this could be one of the biggest storms in history depending where you are. danielle niles is tracking it and joins us with the latest. >> could be a top three storm for dc as the snow hones in on the nation's capital. we have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings all the way from portions of alabama louisiana, england. red shading from dc to philly to baltimore to long island to new york city and newark included, are the blizzard warnings. for us here in southern new england we have a winter storm watch that will likely be upgraded to a warning by this evening for the south croft bristol plight south county and cape -- plymouth county and cape and islands. the snow is advancing into dc within the next hour or so. thunderstorms off the coastline

a sign of the storm center that's going toe redeveloping off the carolina coastline. ice in between and we have had thundersnow in nashville lots of ingredients into the storm. what does it mean for us the rest of the day today it's quiet and chilly the winds subsides temporarily and through the remainder of the day. tonight the clouds thicken tomorrow and 7 a.m. we are doing just fine. the snow will be in new york city at that point and coming back through southwest connecticut. that snow advances from south to north during the course of earl i yf noon and -- early afternoon. and it's knowing along mass pike. north of the border no snow. this is a sharp cut off what we have been saying with the tighgradient in snowfall. midnight bans and southeastern massachusetts with near zero visibility at times with blowing and drifting snow. and by sunday morning, the sun is out across the interior and last of the snow one more burst wrapping up by late morning.

accumulation it's a sharp cut off northern massachusetts this is essentially nonevent a dusting of snow and one to three from far southern essex county including the city of boston and worcester and get to providence south shore back down to the south coast and we have three to six inches and those amounts held towards the lower end on the outer cape and nantucket with a little more wet sloppy snow and mixing that may occur. gusts coastal concerns and i will have all of it coming up in a couple minutes. >> all right thanks very much. right now washington, d.c. under a state of emergency a snow starts to move into the area. 77 million people are in the path of the storm which could paralyze some areas. don champion reports. >> reporter: the national weather service says the snow and sleet that disrupted the morning commute in arkansas and north carolina could turn into one of the ten worst storms the east coast has ever seen. >> we see this as a major storm.

>> reporter: washington, d.c. mayor's says her town is expected to get the brunt of the weather. conditions not experienced in 90 years. there could be up to 3 feet of snow by sunday. schools and government offices are closed and the region's mass transit system will close later today. after getting caught off guard by an inch of snow on wednesday city official said they are better prepared for this storm with a fleet of more than 500 salt and plow trucks. blizzard watches and warnings extend north to philadelphia tomorrow. the new york city area is he canning up to a foot -- expecting up to a foot and new jersey coastline is preparing for a 8 foot easy storm surge. mike's seafood oner moved equipment higher than the 34 super storm sandy. >> after sandy we watch everything a lot more closer. >> reporter: the storm is expected to linger through several high tides. don champion, cbs news

>> yeah it's impressive and it's working in our direction. the rest of today will be quiet for us and the impact in new england compared to the rest of the nation in general is going to be fairly low. now you get back down to the south coast and that's a bit of a different story. so it's a big storm. east coast has been affected by thunderstorms by ice and by snow and the wind as well. but we are steady as she goes. the highest impact is along the south coast of new england and time frame in terms of the tomorrow night. coastal concerns as well with strong winds kicking up the seas. seas will build especially late on saturday and the sunday morning high tides we will talk more about the coastline in a second. outside right now, the temperatures running in to 20. 28 at logan airport. dew point is fairly low. humidity is at 39% and wind is from the northwest and it's a little gusty, so the real feel now. and the wind chills in the teens from worcester to manchester to lawrence.

setting the stage for the snow. we get a winter storm watch in effect and here we go in at areas in blue and south coast of new england to cape cod and it's upgraded to warnings by later this evening. here is the zoomed out view of the storm. the moisture down in cuba. all the way down in cuba. snow advancing into dc probably in the next hour or so. you can see it closing in. snowing in richmond and most of virginia and that will continue to advance northward through the day today. by the time we get to tomorrow mork it's snowing in new york city and bridgeport can't cut and it's not -- connecticut but not for us at home. tomorrow morning is quiet. the clouds will thicken up and will look like snow but the flakes won't start up yet. it takes a little bit of time to come up to the mass pike. by late afternoon and evening. notice a couple flurries in the merrimack valley by 6 p.m. but not much farther. it's sharp cut off mid

those are the deeper blues you see here and the wind is going to be quite strong at that point. so it's good timing for the height of the snow overnight but it will create near zero visibility in southeastern period overnight. sunday morning, the sun is out across the interior. one burst of snow comes through and it will nd by mid to late cape. snowfall amounts, talk about a little if anything a dusting boston. city itself talking one to three that extends into southern worcester and back down near taunton foxboro and that's where the amounts ramp up. we may be on the lower end of the totals to the outer cape and nantucket because of the wetter consistency of the snow and we may get a little mixing that goes on toward the outer cape and nantucket. you have to figure the water temperatures are in the mid-40s this time of year. now let's talk about the wind. high wind watches in effect for the vineyard and nantucket. that's when we may see some of the strongest gusts up to 60 miles per hour.
