a major winter storm batters the east coast. the nation's capital bury under more than 2 feet of snow. >> in new york city, the snow- clogged streets are a nightmare and getting worse. was ordered. storms reaching as far north as new england with the south

take a live look at skituate. >> the south coast, the cape and the islands are really getting walloped. >> thank you for joining us. aryic fisher begins eye team coverage. he's live. >> reporter: hey there. good evening, everyone. blizzard conditions the story on the cape. it really went count here on the cape. the winds causing terrible visibility. the winds have been howling over 50 miles an hour at times. some gusts 70 miles an hour. and that's seth setting the -- that's setting the snow sideways. those bands of heavy snow have been battling through the snow. really creating hefty snowflakes here as you head south of boston. heaviest snow will be pivoting as we head through tonight. but the band will make a while to clear the area. it won't be until after midnight for many locations. to the northwest, still strong winds.

the coastline, those winds are causing very dangerous travel conditions. not advised to be going on the roads. even if there's a lot of snow, boston northward, bhoing and drifting causing issues. half a foot on martha's vineyard and nantucket. you can wear the gear and get bundled youen. it's shovel as you go snow. it's very heavy. clinging to a lot of the lines here. it might look pretty once the wind goes away. the other big concern is power outages getting those reports in now. the power going out in some communities. blizzard conditions on the cape, the island, south coast and then a dramatic dropoff to the north where they are looking at sunshine in northern massachusetts this afternoon. so that sharp line very evident. as we take a look at the

back to barry burbank, unbelievable storm down here to the midatlantic and even snow in florida. >> crazy how bad it is down there. north of boston, virtually nothing going on. a little bit of light snow penetrating north of boston, up to the merrimack valley. instead of moving north, it's moving due east but there's slight pivoting of that band of snow into areas north and west of boston. the massive storm continues on the east coast. moving offshore in the midatlantic states, eventually. steady as she goes as the changes that we've upped them across eastern massachusetts. we still have coastal concerns for strong winds and rough seas. the national weather service has put up the blizzard warning up at cape cod and the islands. that's warranted because of the poor visibility, the strong winds and heavy snow. winter warning here and weather

as you go to the north and west of boston, it drops off. dusting up to 1 inch. probably close to 2, 4 around boston and 3 to 6 south and up to a foot or more down over the cape in many locations. a lot more about the weather in a few minutes. see you then. >> all right, barry. thanks. nantucket has close to 3,000 people without power. let's take a live look along quincy shore drive and continue our live team coverage with jim smith. he's in sci tuate tonight. jim? >> reporter: ken, it's a bit wild tonight at the lighthouse. in fact, a short time ago, we had a confirmed wind gust of 51 miles per hour. just think, the brunt of this storm missed us. but it's bad enough. by mid afternoon, the storm was surging up the coast, bringing heavy surf and strong winds, marshall in the target zone.

streeting roads but they are worried about battered sea walls. >> high tide at 11:00, we're kind of worried about that tide, also the one in the morning. we've done some enhancement on the walls, some stone work. we finished up that. hopefully everything is gonna hold together. >> reporter: just up the road, high winds brought down a section of a machle tree that -- maple tree that came close to a house and wires. >> strong winds down here and by the coast took this tree down that was heavily rotted. it looked like it had woodpeckers i came down on the ice and the wires. >> reporter: and in new bedford, they are getting belted. no running away from it. the first season is upon us. road crews are in for a long night. >> we'll be here throughout the night until the storm is over. >> reporter: that's the same case for us. we'll be over here until the

brunt of it. you are looking at the lighthouse. you can get and idea with the snow and the winds blowing sideways. the high tide tonight at 11:00 and then shortly before noon on sunday. a number of communes worry -- communities worried about that. we'll have an update tonight at 11:00. back to you ken and katie. >> thank you, jim. and thousands of flights around the country are canceled or delayed due to the storm. airlines have shut down flights to and from new york city and in other major airports, including atlanta and airports. we're live at logan with how looks pretty quiet. katie. it is quiet today compared to yesterday. at this hour, more than 200 flights have been canceled. >> i'm quite nervous. >> reporter: one after another.

>> reporter: we watched as flights canceled many to baltimore and now to j.f.k. this as a snowstorm pumps baltimore, d.c. and new york city. >> the real headache. i was supposed to be in indianapolis a lot earlier than i'm gonna be there. it will create issues for my family. >> reporter: this man's connecting flight to brazil has been delayed. >> we'll have to wait here. >> reporter: adam returning from amsterdam to j.f.k., rerouted to boston. >> in florida, we have hurricanes and it sounds like up here you have snow. we don't see much of it. >> reporter: this individual's flight made it out of d.c. but was forced to make an emergency landing at logan after the plane's windshield cracked. stride. >> a little headache, but it's >> reporter: and airlines hope to have all of their flights

reporting live in logan, back to you. katie? >> thank you. one lonely passenger behind her. our team of meteorologists will track the storm through the weekend. we'll have an update tonight at 11:00 and, of course, 10:00 on channel 38 and the very latest tomorrow morning beginning at 5:00 right here on wbz. let's go to our other top stories -- the patriots in denver to wrestle the broncos tomorrow for a trip to the super bowl. >> and the defending champs are slight favorites to win. steve burton joins us live from i hope that becomes more than to win. >> reporter: yeah, i hope you're right. we'll take you away from all of the weather. we are here at ted's bar and grill in downtown denver gearing up for the patriots all access show, live at 7:00. the patriots are gearing up for the biggest game of the season. so far. remember what tom brady said we didn't come this far to only come this far. they know exactly what they have to do.

the fans will be loud. they will be ready. and it's the denver broncos. they solid team. very, very solid defense. so we just gotta be ready mentally and physically when we head out there. >> reporter: well, joining me now is dan roche. brady has his weapons back from the last time they played. julian edelman will be a huge factor. >> yeah, they didn't have him and gronk got hurt. edelman is the key guy. the patriots -- denver has the tough pass rush. the broncos saying brady doesn't need an offensive line. he needs to throw the ball and go, go, go. that's what they want to do with edelman. >> and brady gets it a lot quicker away with edelman. how do you see it unfolding? >> i like the patriots. i like them by a field goal.

should come out victorious. >> reporter: dan has spoets coming up. we're gearing up for all access at 7:00. with less than 24 hours until game time, patriots' fans are starting to show numbers in denver. kate merle is there live with that part of the story. >> reporter: ken, it's a perfect day in denver. fans are really taking advantage of it here at the stadium. they are showing up to get ready for the game to drink it all in. they are coming here just to look around before the big game and finally, finally, patriots' fans have landed and they are coming from all over to support their team. under the towering orange shadow of peyton manning and his broncos, patriots' fans show their pride even in the face of the enemy. >> didn't get exactly a warm reception at the airport last night. >> reporter: what was that like? >> a little bit -- you know, we're in broncos' territory.

these three canadian friends to watch their patriots take to the field here on sunday. >> it will be a classic. it's manning and pray -- brady. best two quarterbacks to bach. >> reporter: with the game one day away, patriots' fans are showing up from all over. james came from tennessee and no, he's not a peyton fan. >> i'm a big tom brady fan. >> reporter: really even coming from tennessee? >> i don't like peyton manning. >> reporter: really? like it no or -- like it or not, he says the patriots are heading to san francisco. >> i think they are gonna win. i don't nope by how much but they are gonna win. >> reporter: 60 degrees and sunny won't last to game day. things are changing tomorrow.

>> gonna grab my 4-year-old a shirt. >> i figure just to be safe, this way i can keep my sidewalk here. >> reporter: though boston will not feel the brunt of the blizzard, people are not taking any chances. they are hoping for the best outcome for the patriots and the storm. >> i think the broncos are gonna get creamed. >> i'm gonna hunker down in the house and watch tv. >> reporter: paul burton, wbz news. this storm is huge, of course, as you can see in this picture from nasa. it stretches from florida to new england. >> barry burbank joins us. he's been tracking the storm and really how much we can expect and barry, it's changed a little bit over the past few days. >> more snow is falling over southeast massachusetts and that line pivoting up just enough. it's running into a wall of dry air and the strong ridge of

it just can't move to the north. it's being forced to the east. that pivoting is taking place right now. we're getting some of that heavier snow moving into boston. a quarter of a mile in boston with the heavy snow falling. it seems to be cranking up here as it pivots in. you can see the spiral bands coming in here. around boston some heavy snow and off to the south. sometimes lightert, sometimes heavier but certainly getting pummeled from boston southeast. so we'll upgreat bost -- upgrade boston. it looks like it drops off. just a dusting. no snow at fitchburg and then probably more than 3, 4, 5 inches in boston and then 6 to 8 inches as you get further down through plymouth, bris toll county and 8 to 12 in southeastern massachusetts,

we've had reports, bemmingham, 3.5. arling tong about 6/10 and so farther but it will be building up in those locations. we still have strong wind gusts. 50 miles an hour at nantucket. we've had some wind gusts, 73 miles an hour. edgartown, about 60 miles per hour and the tides will be watching for some -- perhaps minor coastal flooding occurring tonight and then we do have an astronomical high tide of 10.9 feet coming up for late tomorrow morning. there will be a coastal flood watch out for that. once we get through tonight and it starts to wind down, there's not much going on for the next several days. it's really good weather coming up. no storms in sight. in fact, it warms up to about 46 on tuesday. so we have some nice weather ahead. but tough going here for the next several hours tonight. it will be all gop, clearing out tomorrow morning. i will see you tonight at 11:00. >> thank you. coming up next in sports, more on the big game tomorrow in denver.
