investigation is ill underway. >> reporter: fire apparatus has gone in there. i don't know if you can see because it's dark. but where the flashing lights are there's more smoke now being vented out of that building. and this building is a pumping station that pumps a lot of the suesage over to deer island. so it's very, very important and they had a issue almost 7 stories below ground today that gave everyone including 5 employees and firefighters very difficult time. >> at some point, something went wrong and it was an explosionand the subsequent fire. those employees had difficulty breathing irritation to the eyes. >> reporter: five workers 7 stories below ground and a nut island pumping station an explosion and fire and for emergency responders, this was worse case. >> it was taken 6 minutes to get down to the area where the fire was and start to workch. >> reporter: as black smoke billowed from the vents, neighbors could only wonder.

gray smoke low and all of a sudden the black plumes started to come up and it was looking noxious and they told me that that two people were taken out in the ambulance. >> reporter: this facility handle almost half of the sueage in eastern pumps 400 million gallons a day plant. but officials here are confident the explosion won't facility. >> thankfully most of it goes to the gravity and by-pass that will kick in if we need it we will by-pass the station and continue to deer island. >> reporter: so, what's important is the five employees are going to be okay. smoke inhalation the environment and there's not going to be any raw sewage pumped into boston harbor. this as you heard fred talk about they are able to feed by gravity over to deer island. so that's okay. the issue now is apparently there is some hot spots still down there because there's more

the clerk is being treated for head wounds. a whitman man facing charges after shooting at a plow during saturday's storm. bruce o'brien face adjudge today. today. witnesses said they heard several gunshots and o'brien says the plow nearly hit his jeep and says he fired because he and his wife feared for their lives. police say he was drunk at the not hurt. it's the big dig out for parts of the east coast still buried after the week answered deadly winter storm. and lisa hughes is here with the latest on that. lisa. >> reporter: 36 people died in the storm. washington dc got 2 feet of snow. huge cleanup underway there. government offices and schools were shut down again today. bulldoze verse been brought into clen up -- clean up the capital and city is trucking snow to rfk stadium. maryland is still under a state of emergency in baltimore and crews from boston have joined the clean up effort.

>> a different story. >> and fireworks i got say that view of boston from the mit side is my favorite. beautiful and he captured all our snow. >> it's gorgeous looking into the city there and you've got the river and beacon hill nestled in a great spot. and if you are out there today you see ice on the charles much like last year but you wouldn't see as much snowfall a little blanket nothing like what they have in the mid atlantic look at snow depth here. some of the greatest on this date we have seen in at least 12 years across the united states. and if you compare cities new york has 19 inches today and boston 4 inches and not too bad interesting. cariboo is 8 inches and the top of mount washington has less now. only less than foot and half on top of the rock pile. temperatures tonight are dipping into the upper 20s where snow is deeper. it's fresh and makes for a cold night but look to the south and west 40s at this hour that's all going get pushed in our direction late tonight. so after a quick plummet the first half of the evening

back up by tomorrow morning. here's the set upthis system is going to head up through the great lakes and that's a warmer direction for us. and it's going boost us well into the 40s tomorrow. for tonight a quick drop through the 20s and watching out for areas of refreezing after all the melting today. and then tomorrow,, a little more cloud cover mild but not as bright as what we had today. more clouds and more wind tomorrow and chance for couple rain showers moving through during the afternoon and evening. not too widespread but a fewrain drops the front is into wednesday. for late january. and low 30s for most. and after a rebound after moving up. mid-day cloud increasing mild and windy in the 40s and wind tomorrow about 10 to as high as southwest. and the chance for showers heading towards the evening and sunset creeping closer to 5:00 we are almost there. 48 in boston and 47 in norwood and fitchburg around 45 and

south coast and cape and a lot of melting of the deeper snow pack this is moving offshore on wednesday and we will start the day with clouds and then work in more sunshine. we are near 40 degrees and the trend is all above average. average high is 36 and tomorrow the mildest and head towards the week answered chance for more rain showers and not snow. one thing to watch before we get to the weekend, we have got a storm system developing along the coastline. and the question is does does it phase with this system out of the polar jet stream and become a closer coastal storm or does it graze us and head out to sea. highest chance of impact is towards came cod as well as immediate eastern coastline and the island and right now the track is still a bit to be determined but it's what we will watch heading through the week. it's the only bigger storm system keep tabs on. temperatures running above that average mark all the wayth way through the week wednesday and thursday quiet and a chance for some of the snow especially in the morning on friday and this
